Europe - Travel Trivia Questions

1. After a couple of weeks in Morocco, I'm back in Spain and heading towards a city in Andalusia, its most famous landmark being the Alhambra. Which city is this?

From Quiz
My Trip of Europe, Pt. 2

Answer: Granada

The Alhambra is the most famous site in Granada and perhaps one of the most famous and important landmarks in all of Spain. Built in AD 889 as a small fortress on a hill overlooking the city, it was rebuilt into a fortress and citadel in the 13th century by the Islamic rulers, as Spain was ruled by the Moorish at the time. Though it lay abandoned for centuries after the expulsion of the Moors, it has been renovated since the 19th century and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. As for Granada itself, being an old city, it is chock full of old buildings and monuments. My personal highlight was the Monastery of St. Jerome, which contains a spectacular altarpiece, and every wall is covered in paintings depicting biblical scenes.

2. Crossing the English Channel from Dover to Calais, I drive west towards a town in Normandy for the first stop of my trip. It is famous for its centuries old tapestry and being one of the first towns liberated on June 6th, 1944.

From Quiz My Trip of Europe, Pt. 1

Answer: Bayeux

Bayeux is a gorgeous town on the banks of the Aure. Home to the ancient Bayeux tapestry, which chronicles the Norman Invasion of Britain in 1066, it is also home to a beautiful cathedral and also a Commonwealth War Cemetery, the entire town being rebuilt after World War II to recapture the ancient feeling. Bayeux is also the perfect base to explore Normandy. There are numerous museums dedicated to D-Day, numerous graveyards containing servicemen from the US, Canada, UK and Commonwealth, and even in the depths of an early European autumn, it can be utterly beautiful at times.

3. One year in Bavaria we walked from a town famous for violin making, to the place where the 1936 Winter Olympics were held. Which places did we have our luggage taken from and to?

From Quiz Walking in the Alps

Answer: Mittenwald to Garmisch-Partenkirchen

There are a couple of companies that organise walking tours, where they take your luggage - apart from a day pack - from one hotel to the next, while you walk along valley and mountain paths, averaging about ten miles. We did several of these, all in Bavaria, and this one was exceptionally good. Mittenwald has been the home of famous violin, viola and cello makers since the 17th Century. There is also a cable car - the Karwendalbahn - up to high mountain walks. Hitler forced the neighbouring towns of Garmisch and Partenkirchen to merge in preparation for the 1936 Winter Olympics, and the Olympic sports stadium is still in use, mainly for ice hockey.

4. The Red Square in Moscow is situated next to--and in fact, obtained its name from--which Russian construct?
