With the addition of six new teams, the NHL doubled the number of teams in the league. All the new teams were grouped together and formed the West Division.

The Montreal Wanderers' arena burnt down and they withdrew from the league on January 4, 1918. Although a founder member the Quebec Bulldogs immediately announced they would take a leave of absence, and did not play in the inaugural season. The franchise was sold to P J Quinn of Toronto in 1918 on the condition that the team played in Quebec but the team did not play in the second NHL season. The team played its only NHL season in 1919-20 before the franchise was transferred to the Hamilton Tigers, who joined the NHL in 1920.
