Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which NHL season began with the new expanded league of 12 teams?

Answer: 1967-68

With the addition of six new teams, the NHL doubled the number of teams in the league. All the new teams were grouped together and formed the West Division.
2. In the first season of expansion, which team finished first among the West Division, made up of all the new expansion teams?

Answer: Philadelphia

With 73 points, Philadelphia led the West but would have finished sixth in the other division. Obviously, "West" did not mean geographically.
3. Who was the first player on an NHL expansion team to finish in the top 10 scoring at the end of a season?

Answer: Red Berenson / St. Louis

Red Berenson of the St. Louis Blues finished in eighth place in the second year of expansion. He and two other players above all finished in the top ten in the third year of expansion. No one cracked the top 10 in the first year. Bobby Orr and Boston were not expansion names.
4. How many games did each team play in that first expansion year after the Original Six?

Answer: 74

For the first year of expansion, the NHL teams played 74 games, up from 70 the previous year. But for the next two years, they played 76 games, and then four years of playing 78 games.
5. Which two teams entered the NHL in 1970-71?

Answer: Buffalo and Vancouver

They moved Chicago to the West Division and put both Buffalo and Vancouver in the East. So, Philadelphia was in the West and Vancouver was in the East.
6. By the end of the 2007-08 season, which of these cities never had an NHL expansion team franchise?

Answer: Indianapolis

Indianapolis had a WHA team, but no NHL team. California Seals changed their name to the Oakland Seals in December 1967. Prior to the 1970-71 season, they changed it to the California Golden Seals. They moved to Cleveland in 1976-77, the same year that the Kansas City Scouts became the Colorado Rockies.
7. Which two teams faced off against each other for the first ever all-expansion Stanley Cup?

Answer: Buffalo and Philadelphia

The first ever all-expansion Stanley Cup was won by Philadelphia Flyers over the Buffalo Sabres in 1974-75. The previous season, they had beaten Boston for their first cup, but not against an expansion team.
8. In 1974-75, the NHL was organized into four divisions, named after some great hockey personalities. What were the names of these four divisions?

Answer: Norris, Adams, Patrick, Smythe

The Norris and Adams divisions were in the Prince of Wales Conference, while the Patrick and Smythe Divisions were in the Clarence Campbell Conference. In 1981-82, they juggled the teams and divisions.
9. For the 1979-80 season, four teams were added to the NHL from the defunct WHA league. Which of these was not a WHA team before joining the NHL?

Answer: Atlanta Flames

Atlanta joined the NHL as a new team in 1972-73. The other WHA team to join in 1979-80 was the Winnipeg Jets.
10. Which franchise moved to become the New Jersey Devils in 1982-83?

Answer: Colorado Rockies

The Cleveland Barons merged with the Minnesota North Stars in 1978-79. Quebec Nordiques became the Colorado Avalanche, and Winnipeg Jets became the Phoenix Coyotes.
