Presidential Quotes Trivia Questions

1. "I've got 99 problems and now Jay-Z is one."

From Quiz
Presidential Quotes

Answer: Barack Obama

President Obama spoke at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on April 27, 2013 about the trip that Jay-Z and Beyonce took to Cuba for their fifth wedding anniversary, saying, "Some things are beyond my control. For example, this whole controversy about Jay-Z going to Cuba. It's unbelievable. I've got 99 problems and now Jay-Z is one." Although tourism to Cuba was prohibited for American citizens, Jay-Z's trip was legal as he and his wife travelled under the license of the Sir John Soane Museum Foundation, a group supporting architectural and fine arts, and their visit was arranged to meet the educational requirements for a trip to Cuba. In his remark, President Obama referenced Jay-Z's hit song "99 Problems" (2003) and in the same speech, also name checked Taylor Swift when talking about the budget cut sequester, he said, "Republicans fell in love with it. Now they can't stop talking about how much they hate it. It's like we're trapped in a Taylor Swift album."

2. A U.S. president who made a name for himself in Hollywood before entering politics once said this about the Bible: "Within the covers of the Bible are the answers for all the problems men face." What is the president's name?

From Quiz U.S. Presidents & Their Quotes About the Bible

Answer: Ronald Reagan

Ronald Reagan was the fortieth president of the United States, serving from 1981 to '90. Previously, Reagan served as governor of California from 1967 to '75. Reagan died in 2004 and is regarded as an icon by American conservatives. Because of his sterling ability to communicate with the masses, Reagan was known as The Great Communicator. Many believe his policies brought about the demise of Communism in the Soviet Union and the collapse of the Iron Curtain.

3. The stories of his failure to grasp realities were legendary, but which US President seemed to be aware of them when he joked: "I am concerned about what is happening in Government. It is causing me many a sleepless afternoon"?

From Quiz The Wit Of The White House

Answer: Ronald Reagan

Ronald Reagan was the 40th President of the US, serving between 1981 and 1989. Of the first 44 Presidents, he was the oldest to take office, being just a couple of weeks shy of his 70th birthday. He was satirised as having a limited attention span, but, at least in hindsight, the achievements of his presidency were significant. Noteworthy among these was promoting a resolution of the 'Cold War' between the USA and USSR. Reagan had a handy way with words. On hearing that Clint Eastwood was running for Mayor he quipped: "What makes him think a middle-aged actor, who's played with a chimp, could have a future in politics?"

4. Which man uttered these words? "A truly American sentiment recognizes the dignity of labor and the fact that honor lies in honest toil." Imagine listening to him speak, while you sit under a "grove" of trees.

From Quiz Quote Me If You Can

Answer: Grover Cleveland

This quote is taken from a letter written to the Democratic Convention from New York Governor Grover Cleveland. It was written in August of 1884 during the Grover's campaign run for presidential office. The following is a segment from that letter, as written in Wikipedia, "A truly American sentiment recognizes the dignity of labor and the fact that honor lies in honest toil. Contented labor is an element of national prosperity. Ability to work constitutes the capital and the wage of labor the income of a vast number of our population, and this interest should be jealously protected. Our workingmen are not asking unreasonable indulgence, but as intelligent and manly citizens they seek the same consideration which those demand who have other interests at stake. They should receive their full share of the care and attention of those who make and execute the laws, to the end that the wants and needs of the employers and the employed shall alike be sub served and the prosperity of the country, the common heritage of both, be advanced."

5. This quote is from the sixteenth president, noted for his unhandsome visage. "If I had two faces, would I wear this one?" Who was this?

From Quiz A President Said That

6. Which President said, "Well, when the President does it, that means it's not illegal?"

From Quiz Great Moments in Presidential Speeches

7. Which President, in response to an accusation that he was two-faced, replied, "If I was two-faced, would I be wearing this one?"

From Quiz Presidents Say the Darndest Things

Answer: Abraham Lincoln

This great retort was made to Stephen Douglas during one of the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858, in which the two men battled it out for the Illinois senate seat (which Douglas won). Another Lincoln witticism was made when, after being told by doctors that he had variola, a type of smallpox, he stated, "There is one good thing about this. Now I have something I can give everybody."

8. This president was quoted as to saying, "The less government interferes, the better for general prosperity."

10. What politician has been forever branded as the man who cannot spell potato?

From Quiz Political Gaffes

Answer: Dan Quayle

Vice President Dan Quayle, while visiting a school classroom, corrected a child who had written the word potato on a chalkboard during a spelling bee. Quayle's version? "Potatoe." Some have said the spelling card Quayle was given featured the misspelling. Later, when Bill Clinton referred to the Patriot missile as something that can "go through doors and down chimneys," Quayle quipped, "Bill Clinton knows less about national security than I do about spelling!" (Patriot missiles, unlike cruise missiles and smart bombs, are not designed to shoot objects on the ground with precision; rather, they are defensive missiles designed to shoot down other missiles in the air.)

From Quiz Famous Presidential Quotes And Sayings

Answer: George Herbert Walker Bush (1989-1993)

A superb witticism by George Bush was his attack on his successor: " When Bill Clinton blows his taxophone, America will be singing the blues. " Another surprising remark came from Andrew Jackson's , the 7th President of the U.S.A.: "It's a damn poor mind that can only think of one way to spell a word."

13. "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we."

From Quiz Presidential Quotes

Answer: George W. Bush

This line from George W. Bush came at a 2004 signing ceremony for a defence spending bill. Bush made so many linguistic errors and malapropisms during his time in office that the phrase "bushisms" was coined. Other well known examples from his time on the campaign trail, before he was president include "They misunderestimated me.", "Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning?" and when addressing a Chamber of Commerce before the New Hampshire primary, he asked members to "imagine themselves as a single mother working hard to put food on your family."

14. Some said he was duplicitous, but the 16th President was having none of it it. Who quipped: "If I were two-faced, would I be wearing this one?"

From Quiz The Wit Of The White House

Answer: Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln became President in 1861 and was assassinated in 1865. During his brief incumbency, Lincoln achieved much. Victory for the Union forces in the War Between The States saw slavery abolished and Lincoln also modernised the economy and strengthened the Federal government. He was not, though, universally supported or liked and he had to face down determined opposition, particularly from those who had wanted him to drop calls for manumission and sue for a ceasefire during the Civil War. It took a series of military successes in 1864 to make the northern states victorious.

From Quiz Quotes About US Presidents

Answer: George Washington

George Washington's formal manner inspired this quote. He always wore a powdered white wig. Ben Franklin was never President. Jefferson had red hair and (in keeping with the style of the day) wore powdered wigs and later in life powdered his own hair. Eisenhower was bald and was president much, much later.

16. A truly great man who lived an adventurous life once spoke these words, "Speak softly and carry a big stick". Who does this famous quote belong to?

From Quiz Quote Me If You Can

Answer: Theodore Roosevelt

The first time Theodore used this phrase was in a letter to Henry L. Sprague written on January 26th, 1900. At the time Roosevelt was the Governor of New York and was discussing the re-nomination of Louis Payne as the state's insurance commissioner - a nomination which Roosevelt did NOT want to happen. Later during his time as president this same phrase would become his famous slogan in foreign policy. A carbon copy of the letter can be found and viewed at American Treasures of the Library of Congress.

17. When asked if he enjoyed music, this nineteenth-century president and ex-general replied "I know two songs. One is Yankee Doodle and the other isn't". Who was he?

From Quiz A President Said That

Answer: Ulysses S. Grant

Grant viewed music as a distraction and may have had what is euphemistically called 'a tin ear'. As the General in Command of the Union Armies in 1864 and 1865, he was known to ask that regimental bands not play while on the march.

18. Which President said, "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we?"

From Quiz Great Moments in Presidential Speeches

Answer: George W. Bush

On August 5th, 2004 President Bush gave a speech at the signing of a defense appropriations bill. He appeared to be reading his comments, yet somehow his admission of always thinking of new ways to harm the country wasn't caught by any of his writers. Maybe it was put in there on purpose, or maybe it was an oversight, either way, the president's comments made citizens rest easy knowing who was at the head of the country.

19. In his first and only term in office, this president told the American people, "Freedom can never yield its fullness of blessings...or its administration places the smallest obstacle in the pathway of any virtuous citizen."

27. Who was the U.S. President that made this confession: "I tried to walk a line between acting lawfully and testifying falsely, but I now realize that I did not fully accomplish that goal."?

From Quiz Famous Presidential Quotes And Sayings

Answer: William (Bill) Jefferson Clinton (1993-2001)

Another, less 'suspect' Clinton quote: " There is nothing wrong with America that cannot be cured with what is right in America". May-be John F. Kennedy was foreseeing some of his successors in a later age already when he said: " Mothers all want their sons to grow up to be President, but they don't want them to become politicians in the process."

28. Which president said 'Oftentimes...I don't seem to grasp that I am President'?

From Quiz Stupid Presidential Quotes

29. "My choice early in life was either to be a piano-player in a whorehouse or a politician. And to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference."

From Quiz Presidential Quotes

Answer: Harry S. Truman
