Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I've got 99 problems and now Jay-Z is one."

Answer: Barack Obama

President Obama spoke at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on April 27, 2013 about the trip that Jay-Z and Beyonce took to Cuba for their fifth wedding anniversary, saying, "Some things are beyond my control. For example, this whole controversy about Jay-Z going to Cuba. It's unbelievable. I've got 99 problems and now Jay-Z is one."
Although tourism to Cuba was prohibited for American citizens, Jay-Z's trip was legal as he and his wife travelled under the license of the Sir John Soane Museum Foundation, a group supporting architectural and fine arts, and their visit was arranged to meet the educational requirements for a trip to Cuba.
In his remark, President Obama referenced Jay-Z's hit song "99 Problems" (2003) and in the same speech, also name checked Taylor Swift when talking about the budget cut sequester, he said, "Republicans fell in love with it. Now they can't stop talking about how much they hate it. It's like we're trapped in a Taylor Swift album."
2. "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we."

Answer: George W. Bush

This line from George W. Bush came at a 2004 signing ceremony for a defence spending bill. Bush made so many linguistic errors and malapropisms during his time in office that the phrase "bushisms" was coined.
Other well known examples from his time on the campaign trail, before he was president include "They misunderestimated me.", "Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning?" and when addressing a Chamber of Commerce before the New Hampshire primary, he asked members to "imagine themselves as a single mother working hard to put food on your family."
3. "My choice early in life was either to be a piano-player in a whorehouse or a politician. And to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference."

Answer: Harry S. Truman

Truman was President between 1945 and 1953 and this line is from the book, "Plain Speaking: an Oral Biography of Harry S Truman" (1962) by Merle Miller, which was a collection of conversations between the author and former president as well as recollections from his friends.
Other well known lines from Truman include, "Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a Republican. But I repeat myself.", "If you can't convince them, confuse them." and surely his best known quote, "The buck stops here."
4. "I have left orders to be awakened at any time in case there is a national emergency - even if I'm in a cabinet meeting."

Answer: Ronald Reagan

President Reagan, by his own account, occasionally nodded off in Cabinet meetings and visibly drifted off in a meeting with Pope John Paul II in Rome in 1982. He also had a small nap while in a meeting with French president Francois Mitterand in 1981, prompting TV's Johnny Carson to quip, "There are only two reasons you wake President Reagan: World War III and if 'Hellcats of the Navy' is on the Late Show."
5. "What you're seeing and what you're reading is not what's happening."

Answer: Donald Trump

President Trump uttered these words in 2018 during a speech at the national convention for Veterans of Foreign Wars. Trump was talking about his decision to impose tariffs on the U.S.'s trading partners, telling the audience that "it's all working out," and cautioning them not to believe the news reports.
Unfortunately, his words drew many comparisons with those of George Orwell in his 1949 dystopian novel "1984", "The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command."
6. "Blessed are the young, for they will inherit the national debt."

Answer: Herbert Hoover

Hoover served as president between 1929 and 1933, at the outbreak of the Great Depression and gave this quote after his presidency at the Nebraska Republican Conference in 1936.
While history tends to judge Hoover harshly for his role in the Great Depression and its aftermath, he brought child health to the forefront on government thinking, hosting the first ever White House Conference on Child Health and Protection in 1930. He was also responsible for unprecedented prison reform, passing eight bills on the topic during his presidency.
7. "My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over."

Answer: Gerald Ford

Ford used these words in his speech following his inauguration, when he became president following the resignation of Richard Nixon over the Watergate affair.
As a man who served as both vice president and president without seeking election to either role, he also used this address to say, "I have not subscribed to any partisan platform. I am indebted to no man, and only to one woman-my dear wife, Betty-as I begin this very difficult job".
Ford served as president from 1974 to 1977, after being vice president for just eight months.
8. "Being President is like running a cemetery. You've got a lot of people under you and nobody's listening."

Answer: Bill Clinton

There are many well remembered quotes from President Clinton, most of them concerning the Monica Lewinsky scandal, but I thought that this quote could quite easily sum up life for anyone who has held high office.
Clinton served two terms as president, holding the position from 1993 to 2001 and this quote is taken from a speech he gave in Galesburg, Illinois in 1995, when he was still adjusting to life in the White House.
9. "I was under medication when I made the decision to burn the tapes."

Answer: Richard Nixon

Nixon was of course referring to the Watergate tapes. This was a voice-activated taping system in the Oval Office which would prove or disprove whether Nixon attempted to cover up any involvement by his administration in the break-in of the Democratic National Committee headquarters in 1972.
Ultimately, the tapes were not destroyed and when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Nixon had to release the tapes to government investigators, they revealed that he had conspired to cover up activities that took place after the break-in and had also attempted to influence federal officials to deflect the investigation.
Nixon resigned as president in 1974 before he could be impeached and vice president Gerald Ford was elevated to president.
10. "If one morning I walked on top of the water across the Potomac River, the headline that afternoon would read: 'President Can't Swim'."

Answer: Lyndon B. Johnson

Johnson served as president between 1963 and 1969. taking on the role following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Like so many presidents both before and after him, he had an at times fractious relationship with the press. Although he is viewed favourably by historians for his bills regarding social security, civil rights and gun control, the downside is his involvement in escalating American involvement in the Vietnam War.

The Vietnam War led to many tough questions from unforgiving journalists, so it is quite easy to read Johnson's view of them from the quote.
