Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An "Our Father" or a "Hail Mary" would be an example of this.

Answer: prayer

I suppose that if I had said "the Lord's Prayer" rather than "Our Father" that it would have been too much of a clue. If you ever come across the phrase "Pater Noster," that is simply "Our Father" in Latin.
2. Now subtract a letter and scramble what is left. This term could describe the person who takes care of the bill.

Answer: payer

I hope that the person paying the bill at the restaurant is remembering to include a tip. For many people, the usual range for a tip seems to be somewhere between 15% and 25% of the bill before taxes.
3. Now subtract a letter and scramble what is left. If you have been somewhere through all four seasons or for all twelve months you have been there for this length of time.

Answer: year

In the Gregorian calendar, most years have 365 days but leap years (years divisible by four, but not those that are divisible by 100 unless they are also divisible by 400) have 366 days. The extra day is February 29.
4. Now subtract a letter and scramble what is left. I am and she is, but what about you?

Answer: Are

In modern English, "to be" is the verb that has the most different forms in the present tense. For many other verbs such as "take," only the third person singular is different--and that is only to add an "s".
5. Now subtract a letter and scramble what is left. An Egyptian god might have gone by this name. (Note: This is the spelling that will sound more like you are cheering at a sporting event.)

Answer: Ra

Amun-Ra, to give him his full name, was king of the gods and god of the winds. He was considered the most important of the Egyptian gods except when Aten temporarily took center stage under the Pharaoh Akhenaten.
6. Now subtract a letter and scramble what is left. This is an indefinite article. It is also the first letter mentioned in Webster's Dictionary.

Answer: a

"A" and "an" are the two indefinite articles. "A" is used with words that begin with a consonant sound and "an" is used with words that begin with a vowel sound. "The" is the definite article.
7. Now add a letter and scramble what you have. This is a form of father. In fact, Laura Ingalls in "Little House on the Prairie" called her father by this title.

Answer: pa

"Papa", "Dad", "Daddy", and even "Da" are all also versions of "Father" in English. I suppose "Da" would also be a two-letter word for "Father", but I don't think Laura Ingalls ever used that word in the "Little House" series.
8. Now add a letter and scramble what you have. Gorillas, chimpanzees, gibbons, and orangutans would all be examples of this.

Answer: ape

Famous apes of fiction include King Kong, Mighty Joe Young, Grape Ape, and Kira and Cornelius from "Planet of the Apes." "To ape" someone is a synonym for "to copy" or "to imitate."
9. Now add a letter and scramble what you have. A farmer might be said to sow at the start of the growing season and do this at the end of the growing season.

Answer: reap

The figure of death holding the sickle or scythe is known as the Grim Reaper. I would imagine that reaping a whole field of plants by hand like back in the old days was very hard work. It looks like hard enough work even now.
10. Now add a letter and scramble what you have. This clue is a term you might use to describe a thin candle. Some people might have them around when they were saying what they were saying back in question one.

Answer: taper

A person who makes candles is called a chandler. To make candles by hand can be a tedious and slow process. The wick has to be dipped in the hot wax many times to create a candle of noticeable thickness.
