Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the "Dick Tracy" comic strip, Danny Supeena has just died while signing his confession. One of his gang members is in jail because Junior Tracy has identified him. Furious over a 'kid' putting the finger on their pal, the two remaining gang members fake a hit and run and kidnap Junior. They take him to Tracy's garage while he is still at work and hotwire his car, sliding the bound and gagged Junior underneath before closing the garage tightly. A mysterious figure is watching them from the shadows. What is peculiar about this man?

Answer: He has no face

The crooks recognize him (how could they not?) and call him 'The Blank'. He releases Junior and ties and gags the crooks, putting them under the running car. Then he takes Junior for a drive around town, long enough for the carbon monoxide to work. Once across town, The Blank gives Junior taxi fare to get back home.
2. In "Dick Tracy", Dick questions Junior's description of the blank as they and Pat Patton go to Tracy's apartment. The Blank stands at the top of the stairs and tells them he will eliminate more crooks, then throws a smokescreen and escapes. Days later, 'Lever' Sam is pushed from a speeding car in front of the police station, bound and gagged. Lever is hooked up to a lie detector, but refuses to take it when Tracy brings pictures of crooks in. What does this tell Tracy?

Answer: The Blank is a known criminal and in police records.

Lever refuses to talk even though The Blank nearly killed him. Chester Gould then takes us to The Blank's room, where he is boasts to himself and crosses people off his list.
3. Schultzie Innis is pushed from an airplane and falls through a farmers roof, and shortly after a car is hit by a fast moving train. In the "Dick Tracy" strip, Tracy investigates several clues, but they all come to a dead end. While Dick Tracy investigates a shoe which was in the smashed up car, Pat Patton pries the trunk open and finds the body of 'Nip' Dolton, as well as their first solid clue. What did he find?

Answer: A bloody hand print.

'Nip' Dolton was missing his left shoe, which was found in the front seat. Now to see what the hand print revealed.
4. Chester Gould frequently showed police investigating clues in the comic strip "Dick Tracy" which revealed to the reader how investigations were carried out. Here he spent a week showing how Tracy raised the clue from the car's trunk, then his search through police files. The result revealed The Blank's real name. What was it?

Answer: Frank Redrum

Here we see Gould's first use of a backward spelled name, something he would continue in the future. Redrum was supposed to have been shot in the face in a prison escape using a guard as a shield. His body was later found in a river, but the guard's body was never found. Tracy, of course, now realized it was the guard's body that was found in the river. He also knew that Redrum was killing off his old gang, and after more investigation discovered there was only one left-Stud Bronzen.
The word Redrum as murder spelled backwards has been used in both books and movies, but I believe this was its first use.
In case you're wondering about those answers, in the 1990 movie "Dick Tracy", Madonna played the role of Breathless Mahoney, who disguised herself as The Blank.
5. In the "Dick Tracy" comic strip, The Blank is preparing to eliminate his last former gang member, Stud Bronzen. He is surprised but pleased when he sees Tracy and Patton boarding one of Bronzen's boats. Tracy is there to warn Bronzen about The Blank's revenge. As we see Tracy discovering leg irons in the boat, The Blank lights a dynamite fuse and laughs repeatedly about killing three birds with one stone. The boat is blown to pieces. Who is killed?

Answer: Nobody

The Blank watches as Dick Tracy eventually surfaces and sees Bronzen floating nearby. Yelling for Pat, Tracy gets Bronzen into his other boat, where The Blank sticks them up, admitting he was not proud of his work.
6. "Dick Tracy" comic strip, 1937. After forcing Dick Tracy to drag the unconscious Stud Bronzen below deck, The Blank locks them inside a small room to finish them off. Being a salvage boat, what sort of room is this?

Answer: Decompression chamber

The Blank starts the motor and begins to crush Tracy and Bronzen with compressed air. Pat comes to the rescue and knocks The Blank out with a diving helmet, releasing the captives. Stud Bronzen regains consciousness and jumps overboard, escaping.
Back at the police station, The Blank's mask is removed, revealing a hideous face once nearly blown off by a shotgun blast. Unable to get back with his old gang of crooks because of his disfigured face, he decided to kill them instead.
7. Stud Bronzen is a smuggler of aliens in the "Dick Tracy" comic strip. In a story of fast boats and trickery on the high seas, Tracy and Chief Shellbury, captain of a Coast Guard boat, chase and finally outwit Bronzen. Stud is surprised to see Tracy and Chief Shellbury in a rowboat which is supposed to contain another smuggler, Rottur, and several Chinese being smuggled. Tracy gets off the first shot. Where does it hit Bronzen?

Answer: Between the eyes

A fitting end for a smuggler of human cargo. After a fierce fight to subdue the rest of the smugglers, Tracy and the Chief find a statue of a (nearly) naked woman speaking to them. A secret switch is found and a bedroom with a very beautiful south sea island girl named Noana is revealed. The word prostitution is never mentioned, but is suggested by the scene.
8. Noana reveals to Dick Tracy that she is to report to Johnny Ramm, the owner of a Chinese restaurant. In the "Dick Tracy" comic strip, Ramm is a very sleek, sophisticated gentleman, about to be put on the run by Tracy when the mayor of Chinatown, Ramm's conspirator, was found out to be an imposter. Ramm now begins a protection racket with one aide and Noana, who is being held against her will. A strange man comes to Ramm's door with a letter of recommendation for his services from a mutual friend. What is his name?

Answer: Pete Reppoc

Ramm might be cool and sophisticated, but he can't spell very well or he might have been alerted to the 'coppers'. Reppoc is Dick Tracy in disguise and, together with Noana, arranges to have Ramm arrested.
9. In "Dick Tracy", Tracy and Tess are preparing to take Noana to a ship for her return trip home. A strange looking boy appears at the police station wishing to see Tracy. Slightly older than Junior, he tries to amuse the police department by rapidly changing disguises. What is his name?

Answer: Brighton Spotts

Another attempt by Chester Gould to introduce humor to his strip, Brighton Spotts thinks he is a junior detective. He is a graduate of the ACME detective correspondence school, on lesson seven of his masters degree. He can even carry handcuffs.
After one story, Spotts went the way of J. Scotland Bumpsted-- the slow fade-away.
10. In the "Dick Tracy" strip, the young man waiting on Tracy gets impatient as Chief Brandon suggests he get a train back to his home, Layton Valley Junction. Hearing this, he locks himself in a jail cell. When Tracy returned, he produced a handkerchief with an item of interest in it. What was the item?

Answer: A finger

Spotts had saw a man robbing a train lose the finger a month earlier, and brought it to Tracy. Fingerprints were sent to the FBI and the finger was found to belong to Jo Jo Nidle who had a very long record, and this gave Dick Tracy a new case, one which Brighton Spotts was already working.
