Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If I place a "plain" bet while playing roulette, which of the following numbers or sequences could I have bet on?

Answer: 34

A plain bet simply means a bet on just one of the numbers. By betting on just one number, I decrease the likelihood that I will win but increase my winnings should the ball stop in that number pocket. Traditionally, a single number pays 35:1. If I bet $100 on 34 and it comes up, I would win $3,500.
2. Which of the following is NOT considered an inside bet?

Answer: Split columns

An inside bet is a bet placed in the number chart of the roulette table. Inside bets typically pay more than outside bets. Four corners is when you bet four numbers that connect at the corners (for example 1, 2, 4 and 5). Four corners pays 8:1.

If you bet a street, you are betting three consecutive numbers (1-3, 4-6 and so on). A street pays 11:1. A street is also sometimes called a 3-line to differentiate itself from a 6-line, which is betting on two streets. More confusingly, a 6-line is usually simply called a line or a double street.

Split columns is a bet that is not always allowed. It is seen mostly in the United Kingdom. A split column means you bet on two columns but this only pays 1:2.
3. Does a French roulette wheel have more or fewer numbered spaces on it than an American roulette wheel does?

Answer: Fewer

A French roulette wheel only has 37 spaces on it while an American wheel has 38. The French roulette wheel does not have the 00 space on it while the American one does. This can be slightly confusing because the 00 was called the French double zero when it was introduced to America.
4. The original design of the American roulette wheel had another pocket with what symbol in it? If the ball landed in this pocket, the house won.

Answer: Bald eagle

It was called the liberty pocket and if the ball stopped in it, every player lost and the house took all the money. It was not possible to bid on the liberty pocket. It was a short-lived feature on the wheel as it was, understandably, not popular.
5. If the croupier spins the wheel and the ball stops in the pocket numbered 16, which of the following people would NOT win any money?

Answer: The risk taker who placed the five number bet

There is only one five number bet and that is 00, 0, 1, 2 and 3. This would have paid 6:1 odds for the risk taker had she won.

In roulette, there are many ways to bet. One is to bet a street. Numbers on a roulette table are written numerical across into three columns. The horizontal rows are called streets while the vertical lines are called columns. The street pays 11:1.

Sixteen the sixth number in the first column. The first column begins with one and contains every third number (1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16 and so on). A column only pays 2:1.

Despite a common misconception, the even numbers are not all one color and the odd numbers the other. There is a pattern for determining which numbers are which color. Odd numbers from 1-9 and 19-27 are red. Even numbers from 12-18 and 30-36 are also red. Every other number is black except for the 0 and 00 which are green. Betting a color only pays 1:1.

To "bet the tiers" means you betting on the number between 27 and 33 on the wheel, not the table. The numbers in the tier are 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16 and 33. This is a popular bet in the United Kingdom.
6. Where would I place my chip if I wanted to bet the snake?

Answer: Corner of the 34 square

Betting the snake refers to the zigzag pattern of 1, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 23, 27, 30, 32, and 34. It pays 2:1 odds like any normal column would. Betting the snake is not allowed on all roulette tables. It is traditional to place your chip on the corner of the 34 box to indicate you want to bet the snake.

In some casinos, the table might have a special box to bet the snake or a table might actually have a snake design through those numbers, in which case you should place the chip on the snake's head.
7. Which French scientist created a crude version of the roulette wheel while he was trying to discover a perpetual motion machine?

Answer: Blaise Pascal

Blaise Pascal dedicated his life to mathematics and physics. He was also a noted philosopher. Pascal tried to develop a perpetual motion device - a machine that would never stop moving and could operate with an energy source. One of his creations during his experimentations was the roulette wheel, though he did not associate it with gambling.
8. If I bet "manque", which number could the ball land in to give me a win?

Answer: 3

"Manque" is the French word for low, meaning I bet on the lowest half of the numbers (1-18). "Passe" is the opposite, meaning a bet on the highest half of numbers (19-36). Betting either pays 2:1.
9. At the Monte Carlo Casino on August 18, 1913, which color came up 26 times in a row?

Answer: Black

This infamous incident caused people to lose their life savings because gamblers incorrectly believed red was due to come up. They believed because black had been called so many times in a row, it increased the likelihood of red coming up. In reality, there is an equal chance (slightly less than 50-50) that either black or red would come up no matter what the previous spins were.

This incorrect reasoning is called the gambler's fallacy or the Monte Carlo fallacy.
10. What is the little plastic or glass marker that the croupier uses to mark the winning number on the table after the wheel stops spinning?

Answer: Dolly

When the croupier places the dolly over the called number (or on a chip on that number), that signifies that everyone should keep their hands away from the table. Some casinos have very strict rules about this. There have been instances of people trying to move their chips to turn their losing bet into a winning one after the wheel stopped.

There have also been instances of people trying to take another gambler's chips for themselves. It is proper casino etiquette to remove your hands from the table until after all bets have been paid out and the table has been cleared.
