Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Odyssey is a small town, but it is known for many friendly faces! One of these is a man named John Avery Whittaker, who is also known as Whit. He is a very jolly man with a heart and smile. He loves to teach children about God and encourage them to make new discoveries! What is the name of the ice cream shop and discovery center he operates for kids?

Answer: Whit's End

Whit's End is the most well known place in Odyssey, located right next to McCalaster Park. John Avery Whittaker was inspired to open it after his wife Jenny passed away. Before his adventure with the ice cream shop, Whit worked for an encyclopedia company and was also a teacher. Whit's End was a retired recreation center that was going to be destroyed by the city to create a shopping mall but his wife Jenny fought to save it.

His wife loved children very much and wanted a place where "kids could be kids" and learn about the Bible. Children and adults alike are always coming in to say hi to Whit and ask his advice. Whit gives them advice from the Bible and encourages them to make new discoveries! He puts his love for God at the center of all he does.
2. Whit is an expert at giving family advice, but learned most of his wisdom through his mistakes and experiences with his own family.

Answer: True

Whit learned most of his wisdom through his experience as a father with his own children and his experience as a teacher.

Although Whit does not talk about his family much, Whit has a daughter and two grandchildren. While healing from a divorce his daughter Jana often lashes out at Whit for his attempts to teach his grandchildren moral values. When her son, Monty, tries to manipulate Whit to get what he wants, he manipulates his mother as well. Whit realizes that he missed some valuable times with his daughter while he was balancing his role as a father, school teacher, and head of an encyclopedia company. He ultimately bonds with her again. He teaches Monty what is right and becomes Monty's friend. Whit also becomes friends with his granddaughter, Jenny, who is a very gifted and brilliant child. She often gets herself into trouble with her brother and other children because she does not understand how people react to her talents and abilities.

Whit's son Jason, is a jack of all trades and for a time period is a secret agent. Whit is often separated from his son because of his son's work. When Whit's son decides to retire from agent work, he moves to Odyssey to help his dad with the shop. Like his dad, he is an inventor and friendly at giving advice. He spends time with the kids and becomes their friend.
3. Whit's End is full of exciting things for children! Most of them are focused on teaching them about discoveries and the Bible. Which of these is Whit's most famous invention that enables children to travel through time or be apart of a real life story?

Answer: The Imagination Station

The Imagination Station is Whit's invention that is similar to a time machine. Whit programs adventures for children that allow them to be apart of a Biblical story or historical adventure. One of the first adventurers became part of the story of Jesus and after his experience became a Christian. Other children have experienced the story of Moses, visited with Abraham Lincoln, learned the history of the King James Bible, and many other exciting stories!

Extra Fact: Other inventions Whit has made to teach kids about the Bible include the Room of Consequence, the Bible Room, and the Environment Enhancer.
4. Here is another friendly face around Odyssey and is also Whit's best friend! Say "Howdy" to Tom Riley! Tom, like Whit also is a firmly founded Christian who puts God at the center of all he does. Occasionally you will see him put on an apron to help Whit out in times of rushes at the ice cream shop, but Tom enjoys being a laid back kind of guy who prefers quiet. What does Tom do for a living?

Answer: He is a farmer

Tom Riley has a farm outside of Odyssey that is almost as famous as Whit's End. He enjoys his horses and his apple orchard that was believed to be planted by Johnny Appleseed. On the side Tom also coaches little league teams and is a friend to kids at Whit's End. Tom frequently encourages Whit when they go through hard times and believes strongly in the power of prayer. Both of them have similar histories with their families and are strong Christians in the community. Tom was mayor for several years in Odyssey and continued to uphold his morals in politics even when he was under pressure.

In one instance it was revealed when people tried to put a scandal on Tom, that the lady Tom was spending time with at the nursing home was actually his wife. Tom rarely talks about her because he always has the hope that she will overcome her mental illness and be with him again.
5. This young lady came all the way from California! At first she was a troubled teen who just wanted a job when Whit offered her one at Whit's end. However Connie Kendall ended up staying around and became a Christian! She is loved by kids of all ages, including teenagers! What situation brought Connie to Odyssey, but eventually worked out for good?

Answer: her parents were going through a divorce

Connie's parents were going through a divorce, and Connie's mother took her with her when she moved to Odyssey. Connie wanted a job so that she could secretly take a bus and move to be with her dad. Whit offered her a job and she became a big help at the shop.

She made friends with the kids through Bible quizzing, but at first she didn't want anything to do with becoming a Christian when Tom and Whit tried to witness to her. However when Connie finally did go to California, she realized how much she missed Odyssey and the truths Whit was teaching her about Jesus.

She came home and asked Whit to help her become a Christian. She has been around ever since and has become one of the most well known people in Odyssey!
6. Squeak! Squeak! That must be Bernard Walton, busy at work trying to get all those fingerprints off the windows! Bernard owns a janitorial service and is very good at what he does. However Bernard also has a talent that not many people know about! What does Bernard enjoy doing that teaches kids about the Bible?

Answer: he's a great storyteller

Bernard is an excellent storyteller and enjoys making the Bible come to life for kids. He also runs his own TV program called B-TV which is a children's show that focuses on Christian values such as giving, thankfulness, compassion, and forgiveness. Bernard is a hard worker though and is constantly on the move to fix those dirty windows.

He frequently tells Whit he wishes he would teach those kids to keep their fingers off the glass, but secretly he loves what he does with cleaning! He always does a fine job! He also is known for his funny remarks and odd sayings about life.
7. Look out! A student of the technical industries of science and knowledge of the utmost extreme is rapidly approaching on a two wheeled metal transportation system that is none automotive! Yes, that's right, here we have Eugene Melstner, a college student who uses big words at a very fast pace and often crashes into things with his bicycle! Where does Eugene go to college?

Answer: Campbell County Community College

Eugene is a genius and goes to school at Campbell College! Like Connie, he also helps Whit at Whit's End, although computers are more up his line of specialty. Sometimes he gets carried away with inventions and once has even made the doorbell at Whit's end sound like a giant semi truck horn! (Whit made him change it back to the little bell of course!) Whit laughs when Eugene frequently gets on to Tom and Bernard's nerves because they don't believe Eugene knows the meaning of speaking English when he always talks like a walking dictionary. Eugene is brilliant, but he is often absent minded and good at crashing into things! For a long time, Eugene rode a bicycle because he could not pass his driver's test. However with the help of Connie he finally did get his driver's license! He also finds out he is Bernard Walton's cousin!

Extra fact: Eugene was created from one of the Odyssey listener fan letters! One listener asked if a character could be created that reminded them of their dad, who was super smart but always was losing his keys! Odyssey creators listened and Eugene was born! :) He's become one of the main key characters over the course of the show!
8. Not every neighborhood has a mailman that will sing to you on special requests! Odyssey's mailman,Wooton Basset, has children and adults smiling everywhere he goes! He snorts when he laughs and loves random things. He is known for his rather unusual house with a slide for guests and enjoys creating many random things out of whatever he finds, such as the Popsicle nativity scene at Christmas. One of Wooton's secret hobbies though has made him really famous! What is the name of the comic book hero Wooton has created and authors?

Answer: Power Boy

Wooton is an expert on Power Boy, his favorite hero! However not many people know that Wooton is the secret creator of this popular comic book. Wooton has a secret headquarters in his house that is devoted entirely to Power Boy and the creation of the comics. When Wooton sees his symbols and things that are from the Power Boy comics used as a reply for help, Wooton immediately goes to save the day!

In one episode, a boy's father steals Wooton's original drawing of Power Boy which is worth millions. After the boy, Grady, confesses and tries to make things right, Wooton explains to him that the drawing is not worth as much as the boy himself is and Wooton would have given the drawing away in a heartbeat if he knew it would have helped Grady. Grady becomes a Christian through Wooton's friendship and kindness.
9. Ladies and gentlemen! This loud, obnoxious character wants your attention on the radio right now! He is full of exclamation points and loves the sound of his own voice! What is the nickname of Odyssey's radio talk show host Bryan Dern?

Answer: Crying Bryan Dern

"Crying" Bryan Dern is not always taken seriously because he is always trying to stir up the news in Odyssey. He often brings humor to many of Adventures in Odyssey's shows, but around Odyssey he has been known to challenge many Christian morals that the people of Odyssey highly value. Bryan has challenged Whit on his Christianity and takes the atheistic side for attention.

However his attempts to degrade Christian values or traditions have always backfired. When news is not so exciting, Bryan focuses on games, jokes, and put downs. Sometimes though he is called on his least favorite duty as a news reporter or commercial man, but he is always looking for a chance to expose something exciting!
10. Step right up, step right up! If you have pictures, we will take them! This is the Electric Palace, home for all your electrical needs and even stuff you don't need! We will sell you anything, and if your lucky you might even get a chance to win one of the store's contests! What is the name of the Electric Palace's owner, who is also Odyssey's well known conman?

Answer: Bart Rathbone

If you come to Odyssey, chances are you won't get away without meeting this businessman. Bart Rathbone is energized about making money, in almost any way he can. Even when he ran for mayor of Odyssey, Bart advertised the Electric Palace every chance he could! Bart often hosts many contests to bring publicity to the store, including a day with a celebrity contests and an all expense paid trip to Hawaii. Bart left out the detail on the Hawaii trip that it included his whole family accompanying the winner (which turned out to be a disaster for the prize winner). Bart can be a conman but rarely wants to get himself into trouble. Don't forget though, if you need electronics, this is where to get them!

Extra Fact: The actor that plays Bart Rathbone, also plays Tom Riley. Walker Edmiston played both roles and many others on the show.
11. Odyssey may be a small town but it has it's place for fine arts. The Harlequin Dinner Theater, is known for a good show run by Edwin Blaggard and his faithful assistant, Shakespeare! What is Edwin Blaggard's favorite type of theatrical plays?

Answer: classical drama and tragedies

Oh the drama! Edwin would love to focus on classical dramatic works and tragedies, but it often puts people to sleep. Edwin does love a good family show though and has put on many successful productions in Odyssey. He views it as his life mission to bring art and theatrical masterpieces to the "masses".

Although one time Shakespeare brought to his attention, the audience was full of mechanical hand clappers. However when Blaggard has done family productions he has a full house and receives many excellent reviews from critics! Just goes to show, entertainment can support good family values and still produce a box hit!
12. If someone is missing, this man will be looking. Harlow Doyle, Private Eye, is always on the lookout for detective work. What was the case Harlow volunteered to solve when Connie couldn't figure out why her students were not showing up to Bible study?

Answer: The Case of the Delinquent Disciples

Harlow volunteers to find Connie's missing students when Connie tells them they have "disappeared". Harlow puts on many disguises so that he can be "undercover" when he asks Connie's students where they were the nights they didn't show up to Bible study. Harlow doesn't have good results and ends up getting sick because he is allergic to his carpet cleaner disguise.

He reports to Connie that her students have stopped showing up because they think she is boring. Connie gives up on teaching altogether until Whit talks to her students and to her. Whit finds out the reason her students were disappearing was because Connie wasn't showing interest in them or her Bible study.

She had been doing the Bible studies unprepared. Connie and her students make up and agree to all put effort into the Bible study starting with Connie learning the lesson to "study to show thyself approved". (2 Timothy 2:15)
13. Odyssey may seem like a quiet town, but it has it's share of excitement. From time to time we do have a face a villain or two. Which of these characters has NOT been a villain of Odyssey?

Answer: Jack Allen

Jack Allen is one of Whit's closest friends. Endramada, Dr. Regis Blaggard, and Phillip Glossman have all at one point or another tried to attack Odyssey and change it completely.

Dr. Regis Blackgaard specializes in stealing computer programs and illegal government activity. He has tried to steal a program from Whit called "applesauce", became a virus in the Imagination Station, has participated in terrorist activity, and has tried to become mayor of Odyssey. When he first came to Odyssey, he wanted to appear as a normal businessman who loved children and created Blackgaard's palace. Although it was meant for children, it was the opposite of Whit's End and taught children to have no moral values. It was burnt to the ground by one of his employees who was working with Blaggard to steal computer programs from Whit's End. Dr. Regis Blackgaard's main ambition in life is to have power and money. He can never get enough.

Phillip Glossman has been a nemesis of Tom Riley and Whit's End. He wanted to turn Odyssey into a modern day town, but never succeeds. When Whit's End first wanted to open in an effort to save the town's recreational center, Phillip Glossman wanted to destroy it to build a shopping mall instead. He failed but on a later occasion tried to run a highway through Tom Riley's farm, almost destroying Timmy's cabin, which was the cabin of Riley's son who had died in a boating accident as a boy. Glossman also tried to shut down Tom Riley's farm by poisoning his apples.

Andromeda was a media company that wanted to take over the world by manipulating people's brain waves. They opened as an entertainment company in Odyssey called Novacom. They invented boxes that produced brain waves that at first seemed to help people with medical problems. The boxes however destroyed the minds of those who used them.

Whit and his friends have all overcome each of these villains through their faith in God and the power of prayer as they took action. Good has always triumphed over evil in Odyssey!
14. Odyssey is a place that gives honor to it's heroes, especially those in military uniform. Let's turn our attention to the Veteran's Memorial, where it looks like Whit is kneeling to place a rose on one of the graves. Which of these heroes was a son to Whit and died in the Vietnam War?

Answer: Jerry

Jerry was Whit's eldest son and died during the Vietnam War. Over the years, people in Odyssey tried to attack the honor given to the town's military heroes but people like Whit, who had served in wars before, always stood to honor the liberty and freedom soldier's sacrifices had made. One young boy and his mother donated a monument to the Veteran's Memorial in honor of her husband and his father. The boy's teacher had tried to discourage him by saying their wasn't any honor in Vietnam, but after Whit challenged the teacher he found out that the teacher's brother had died in that war. Whit gave honor to the teacher's brother and had his name placed on the monument along with all the other Vietnam soldiers, including his son Jerry. The teacher learned a valuable lesson in encouraging his students and honoring America's heroes. God bless our troops!

Extra Fact: Whit served in the United States military as a solider on the USS Irongate in the Pacific during World War 2. He lost the top part of his right ear in battle, but is usually unnoticed by people in Odyssey because it is hidden by his hair.
15. As we come through a close, I think it would be good to look through one of the Odyssey scrapbook! Adventures in Odyssey was not always known by this title. What was the name of the original program that eventually lead to the development of Adventures in Odyssey?

Answer: Family Portraits

Dr. James Dobson, a well known family Christian speaker and producer of Focus on the Family, wanted to produce Family Christian entertainment that would be an alternative for families to listen to besides the mainstream media. His goal was to provide an entertainment ministry that would bring families closer together and teach truths about God's Word. In 1987, Focus on the Family launched their first test series of a program called "Family Portraits". The show was a huge success and name of the show was later changed to "Adventures in Odyssey" to appeal more to younger generations.

Extra fact: "The Adventures in Odyssey Scrapbook" is actually included as a part of their program on on their tapes and CDs. The Scrapbook is excerpts and clips of behind the scenes fun facts and trivia about the production of the show! Look out for it on "Adventures in Odyssey's" gold albums!
