Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of these birds is the only one that CAN fly?

Answer: Crow

Crows are found in most parts of the world and are one of the most intelligent creatures in the animal kingdom. Not only do they use tools they can also make them. They are excellent fliers.

The cassowary and the rhea are similar to the large Australian bird, the emu. The kiwi is much smaller than those two, it is about the size of a chicken and is a native of New Zealand.
2. Which of these birds is the most comfortable in the cold climate of Antarctica?

Answer: Chinstrap Penguin

The chinstrap penguin stands a little bit over two feet in height. It has an ear-splitting call and because of this is sometimes called the stonecracker penguin. They have really thick blubber for insulation and their feathers are so tightly packed together that the cold of Antarctica does not bother them.

All the other birds mentioned above are more at home in a tropical climate.
3. Which the following birds has tall legs?

Answer: Flamingo

Flamingoes have this unusual habit of standing up on one leg for long periods of time. Scientists still haven't figured why exactly they do this but they do have some interesting theories. One is that they think that the flamingo can rest one side of its body. Then it wakes that side up, puts the sleeping leg down, lifts up the other one and rests the other side. Remember, it is a theory and still not proven.
4. Fish is a major part of the diet of which of the following birds?

Answer: Heron

Herons are sometimes called egrets and bitterns. They have long legs and are usually found near the coast, which is handy if you like fish. One of their most unusual features is their long necks which they can bend into an "S" shape. This means they can bring their heads in closer to their body when they're flying, making it a little easier for them.
While the other birds mentioned may, from time to time, get the chance to eat fish it does not form a major part of their diet.
5. Three of these birds are very good at flying but one of them cannot fly at all, which one is it?

Answer: Emu

The emu, by height, is the second largest bird in the world. It does have wings but they are very small and are useless for flight. The emu's legs are amongst the strongest in the animal kingdom and it allows them to run very quickly on land. They also have very good hearing and excellent eyesight.
6. Which of these birds is a good swimmer but cannot fly?

Answer: Penguin

Almost all of the world's penguins are in the southern hemisphere and most of those can be found in and around Antarctica. They do have wings but they don't help them to fly. They're not useless though because penguins have adapted them to use as flippers, which is one of the reasons that they are very good swimmers.

The Baikal teal is a type of duck.
7. Which of these birds is native to Australia and New Guinea?

Answer: Kookaburra

The kookaburra is a type of kingfisher and it is easy to recognise by its huge and happy laugh. It has been said that its laugh is similar to that of a human and it is sometimes called the laughing jack-ass. The kookaburra is one of the symbols of Australia and in the year 2000 a kookaburra named Olly was one of the mascots for the Sydney Summer Olympic Games.
8. Which of these birds is the fastest runner?

Answer: Ostrich

The ostrich is the largest living bird in the world and it lays a monstrous egg, easily the largest of all the egg laying birds. They have really long and powerful legs that help them to run as fast as seventy kilometres an hour (that's about forty three miles per hour).

The bald eagle is certainly a very good flier but he's a lousy runner.
9. Which one of these birds can fly backwards?

Answer: Hummingbird

Hummingbirds are one of the smallest birds around, about three to five inches in length. They have the ability to flap their wings really quickly, some of them can flap as fast as 80 beats in one second - not one minute, one second! Because of this they can hover and also fly backwards. The noise that their wings make sounds very much like bees humming, which is how they got their name.
10. Which of these birds usually has seeds as the main part of its diet?

Answer: Finch

Finches are usually very small birds. Most of them are also good singing birds, have stubby but strong beaks and are often found in areas where there are lots of trees. While they mainly feast on seeds they love berries and will also feed on small insects. Some are even able to get at nectar.

The other birds above are generally fish eaters.
