Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Using only letters found in 'missile command', what is a verb meaning to 'burn with hot liquid or steam'?

Answer: Scald

A scald is very painful, and great care must be taken around hot or boiling water. Scalding can also be used to sterilise items, such as needles. The word is also used in recipes, where it means to bring a liquid close to boiling point.
2. Using only the letters found in 'missile command', which word describes the expression on your face when you are happy?

Answer: Smile

If you smile at another person, they will usually respond by smiling back. There is an old saying that 'it takes more muscles to frown than to smile', so it is easier to smile. While there is no proof of this, it has been proved that smiling can lift your mood, so the principle is worth following.
3. Using only letters found in 'missile command', find a word meaning 'a refusal to accept or believe something'.

Answer: Denial

Denial can be used also as a refusal of a request or as a statement that something is not true. Self-denial means to refuse yourself something that you would like, e.g. not eating chocolate when you are on a diet.
4. Using only the letters in 'missile command', find a word which means 'to demand something as being due to you'.

Answer: Claim

To 'lay claim' to something is to insist that it belongs to you. It can also be used to mark possession of land, as in 'the gold miner staked his claim'. You can also make a claim under an insurance policy, if you have an accident in your car.
5. Using only the letters in 'missile command', find a word which means the same as 'interior'.

Answer: Inside

Inside is the opposite of outside. You play outside when the weather is good, or inside if it is raining, where outside and inside refer to a building. Your 'insides' are the interior of your body, and another use is in the expression 'inside information' where something is known only to members of an organisation.
6. Using only letters found in 'missile command', find a word which means 'submissive or easily managed'.

Answer: Docile

Docile means calm or placid and is the opposite of wild or unmanagable. An animal which responds to training can be described as docile.
7. Using only the letters found in 'missile command', find a name for a yellow citrus fruit.

Answer: Lemon

A lemon has a sour taste, and is not pleasant to eat, but is used for flavouring and to make lemonade. Lemon is also used to describe a pale yellow colour. It is also used to describe something which is defective or breaks down regularly, often referring to cars, as in 'my new car is a real lemon'.
8. Using only the letters in 'missile command', find a word which means 'a figure of speech comparing something with another, unrelated, item'.

Answer: Simile

The word comes from Latin, and has the same roots as the word 'similar'. Most, but not all, similes include the words 'like' or 'as' in the description. Examples are 'she swims like a fish', 'he runs like the wind' and 'it's as slippery as an eel'.
9. Using only the letters in 'missile command', find a word to describe what you find at the ends of your fingers (plural).

Answer: Nails

Nails grow constantly throughout your life and have to be cut regularly to keep them tidy. Some women do allow their nails to grow to extreme lengths, which must make certain tasks difficult to carry out. Nails can also refer to metal spikes, which are used to hold pieces of wood together.
10. Using only letters found in 'missile command', find a word meaning 'a slow moving mollusc'.

Answer: Snail

Snails have shells into which they can retract their bodies for safety. Snails without shells are called slugs. In France, certain types of snail are eaten, often cooked with garlic and butter. If you choose 'escargots' on a menu in a French restaurant, expect to be served with cooked snails.
