4. Steven sat writing his Christmas cards while watching the little bird outside the bistro bingeing on breadcrumbs.

Answer: robin

It is believed that the reasons robins are so popular on Christmas cards in England is that in the early days of the postal service in the mid 1800s the postmen always wore red coats as their uniform and were nicknamed 'Robins' after the red-breasted bird. People were so keen to get their Christmas cards they would look out for the 'Robins', which led to the little bird's popularity at Christmas time. The American robin is quite different from the European robin, it also has a red breast but its other markings are not the same, and it is also much bigger.

Generally they are portrayed as large, scaly reptilian creatures, sometimes with four legs, sometimes with two, and they may or may not have wings. Some are depicted as breathing fire. The dragon is one of the creatures in the Chinese zodiac, the other eleven all being real animals, not mythological. The Welsh flag has a red dragon on it, and the flags of Bhutan and Malta have a dragon too. The dragon in the Maltese flag can be seen being slain by St George, on horseback, in the centre of the George Cross in the upper left of the flag's white stripe. The island of Malta was awarded the George Cross by King George VI in 1942.
