Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We have to begin with "Swish and Flick". In "Philosopher's Stone" ("Sorcerer's Stone") Professor Flitwick teaches the first years about the levitating spell. He tells them about Wizard Baruffio. Where did Wizard Baruffio end up with a buffalo?

Answer: On his chest

The levitating spell is Wingardium Leviosa. Not surprisingly, Hermione manages to be the first to levitate her feather, much to Ron's disgust. Later in the book, this spell comes in useful for knocking out a mountain troll.
2. What spell did Harry use, which was useful for him during the first task of the Tri Wizard tournament in "Goblet of Fire"?

Answer: Accio

Accio is a Summoning Charm, and Harry summoned his Firebolt, which helped him confuse the Hungarian Horntail. Accio means "summon" in Latin.
3. Where did Hermione use the Confringo curse in "Deathly Hallows"?

Answer: In Bathilda Bagshot's house

Confringo is a Blasting Curse. Hermione used it so she could escape with Harry, after Bathilda is revealed to be Nagini the snake. Unfortunately, Harry's precious holly and phoenix feather wand is damaged during the blast.
4. In "Deathly Hallows", Hermione uses a gouging spell. What is it?

Answer: Defodio

When the Trio are in Gringotts, looking through Bellatrix Lestrange's vault, this spell is cast in order to make a larger hole, so that they can escape on the dragon.
5. Who did Harry use Langlock on, in the hospital wing, in "Half Blood Prince"?

Answer: Peeves

Langlock sticks your tongue to the roof of your mouth. Harry was trying to persuade Dobby and Kreacher to follow Draco Malfoy around day and night.
6. What spell did Hermione use on Phineas Nigellus's portrait in "Deathly Hallows"?

Answer: Obscuro

This spell blocks someone's vision. Phineas was useful because he could tell the Trio what was going on at Hogwarts.
7. What spell or effect did Mr Ollivander use on Fleur Delacour's wand, during the Weighing of the Wands in "Goblet of Fire"?

Answer: Orchideous

Mr Ollivander did all these things during the Weighing of the Wands. Harry is concerned because he hasn't been very careful with his wand. Orchideous produces a bunch of flowers from its tip while Avis produces a swarm of birds.
8. Patronuses are a very special spell, produced by saying "Expecto Patronum". But what Patronus shape did Luna Lovegood have?

Answer: Hare

Luna is a very popular character; she was first mentioned in passing (as "the Lovegoods") in "Goblet of Fire". We meet her properly in "Order of the Phoenix". Jo has told us that Luna married Rolf Scamander, and has twin boys, Lorcan and Lysander.
9. What spell is used to animate statues and armour in "Deathly Hallows"?

Answer: Piertotum Locomotor

Professor McGonagall uses this spell to make the statues and armour defend Hogwarts. It was a very successful spell.
10. What is a good spell to keep Muggles away from a place or object?

Answer: All of these work

Hermione used all three of these spells when the Trio were camping in "Deathly Hallows". Hogwarts is bewitched, so that Muggles only see an old ruin.
