4. Warwick Estevam Kerr is a Brazilian agricultural engineer, entomologist, and scientific leader known for discoveries in the genetics and sex determination of many species of bees. In 1957, he accidentally released some Africanized bee queens, which resulted in the species known as the Africanized Honey Bee. By which scary nickname are Africanized Honey Bees commonly referred to?

Answer: killer bees

In an attempt to hybrid African and European honey bees in a South American laboratory, Warwick Kerr, bee scientist extraordinaire, accidentally allowed several of the hybrid cross African/European bees to escape. This quickly gave rise to what we know as "killer bees", which are much more defensive than the African and European buzzers were on their own. Contrary to urban legends, "killer bees" do not have deadlier venom than their forerunners and unless one has an allergy to bee venom, cannot kill a person with a single or even several stings. They received their moniker "killer bees" because once the hive is provoked, this species of bees quickly begin to attack whatever it is that disturbed them in ever-increasing numbers.

6. Honey bees, carpenter bees, bumble bees--we've heard of them all, but about how many recognised species of bee are there in the world?

Answer: 15,000 - 20,000

According to Wikipedia, there are nearly 20,000 known varieties of bee in the world and possibly many more unknown species. They can be found on every continent except Antarctica and range in size from the smallest bee (Trigona minima) which is a stingless bee approximately 2.1 mm (5/64") in length all the way up to the largest bee (Megachile pluto) a leafcutter bee, the females of which can reach 39mm (1.5").

7. Honeybees can perceive movements that are separated by 1/300th of a second. Humans can only sense movements separated by 1/50th of a second. Were a bee to enter a cinema, it would be able to differentiate each individual movie frame being projected.

Answer: True

Wow! Talk about enhanced vision. It's true! A honeybee's ability to sense movement is six times keener than that of the human eye, an amazingly intricate organ in its own right. And what's even more amazing is that honeybees have FIVE eyes which means the sight of a honeybee is approximately fifteen times more acute than that of people. With vision like that, you'd never miss anything when watching your favourite movies or TV shows. Wouldn't it be great if scientists could only find a way to transfer the incredible sight of a honeybee into humans (and especially into some of the referees in major league sports who seem to need the help at times)?
