Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Mashed Potato was a popular dance in the late 1950s and early 1960s, but which star of soul music released the single, "(Do the) Mashed Potatoes" in 1960, under the pseudonym Nat Kendrick and the Swans?

Answer: James Brown

The Godfather of Soul himself, Mr James Brown released this record, but released it under an assumed name, and on a different record label as his label wouldn't allow him to record it. This was due to the fact that the previous instrumental track with which Brown was involved, James Davis' "Doodle Bee" (1959) had not sold well and they didn't want to chance another flop.
This track though reached top ten in the Billboard R&B chart in USA and Brown followed it with "Mashed Potatoes U.S.A." in 1962, this track on his regular label, which peaked at 21 on the R&B chart.
Other popular songs which cashed in on the dance craze included "Mashed Potato Time" (1962) and "Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes)" (1962), both by Dee Dee Sharp as well as "Mashed Potato" (1964) from Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs.
2. "Let the sky rain potatoes, let it thunder to the tune of 'Greensleeves'" is a line spoken by which Shakespearean character, would be suitor to Mistress Page and Mistress Ford?

Answer: John Falstaff

Although Falstaff appears in Shakespeare's plays, "Henry IV, Part 1" (circa 1596) and "Henry IV, Part 2" (circa 1597), this line is taken from "The Merry Wives of Windsor" (circa 1602). The line is uttered by Falstaff when he is in the woods with the two ladies, hoping to seduce them and as potatoes were considered an aphrodisiac in Shakespeare's time, one can guess at his intentions.
Falstaff is often cited as one of Shakespeare's most lovable characters, and certainly his most comedic.
3. Which American politician attracted widespread derision in 1992, for not knowing how to spell the word, "potato"?

Answer: Dan Quayle

Quayle, as vice president to George H.W. Bush was on the campaign trail in Trenton, New Jersey, when he stopped off at a middle school to preside over a spelling bee. 12 year old William Figueroa was called to the board to spell the word "potato", which he correctly did. As he turned to go back to his seat, Quayle stopped him, saying, "Hold on now, add a little to the end there."
With Quayle's urging, Figueroa added a letter "e", before looking at it and erasing it and then taking his seat.
Although the vice president called his error "discouraging and exasperating", he maintained it was not his fault as the cue card was incorrectly printed, and he cashed in on the incorrect cue card by appearing in a commercial for Wavy Lay's Potato Chips just two years later, in 1994.
4. "Po-tay-toes! Boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew... Lovely big golden chips with a nice piece of fried fish," is a classic line from the movie, "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" (2002). Who delivers this line to Smeagol?

Answer: Samwise Gamgee

The line in the film occurs just before the trio of Frodo, Sam and Smeagol spy an army of the Easterlings marching, as Sam is bemoaning the lack of meat on the rabbits caught by Smeagol.

In the book by J.R.R. Tolkien from 1964, the line reads as, "'Po-ta-toes,' said Sam. 'The Gaffer's delight, and rare good ballast for an empty belly. But you won't find any, so you needn't look. But be good Sméagol and fetch me some herbs, and I'll think better of you. What's more, if you turn over a new leaf, and keep it turned, I'll cook you some taters one of these days. I will: fried fish and chips served by S. Gamgee. You couldn't say no to that.'
'Yes, yes we could. Spoiling nice fish, scorching it. Give me fish now, and keep nassty chips!'", which is still brilliant writing but the film version works so well in the movie.
5. The Canadian town of O'Leary may be home to less than 1,000 people, but it is also the home of The Canadian Potato Museum. In which province would you find O'Leary?

Answer: Prince Edward Island

The town of O'Leary is surrounded by fields in which the humble potato has been grown for generations, so what better place for a museum celebrating it?
The museum has a large number of agricultural implements on show, all related to the growing of potatoes, and is also home to the world's largest potato sculpture, a 14 feet (4.2 metres) high fibreglass model of a potato, as well as the Potato Hall of Fame. Add to this a restaurant that serves some of the best poutine and baked potatoes ever and you have a perfect day out.
Potato museums can also be found in Austria, Belgium, Italy, Germany, France, Denmark and USA.
6. Spud is a heroin addict from the Irving Welsh novel, "Trainspotting" (1993), but who played the role in the 1996 film adaptation?

Answer: Ewen Bremner

"Trainspotting" (1996) was one of Ewen Bremner's earliest movie roles, and he went on to have parts in blockbusters such as "Pearl Harbor" and "Black Hawk Down" (both 2001) and "Around The World In 80 Days" and "Alien vs Predator" (both 2004).
Although Spud is in prison for much of both the book and movie, he receives a large amount of cash from Renton (played by Ewan McGregor) as a reward for not grassing him up when he steals two kilograms of Begbie's heroin.
7. Which UK comedian hit the charts in 2020 with a reworking of his song from the TV show, "Shooting Stars" (1995-2009) entitled "Thank You Baked Potato"?

Answer: Matt Lucas

The original song, performed by Lucas as George Dawes, was titled "Baked Potato Song", but in 2020 he reworked it and released it as "Thank You Baked Potato", in support of the Feed NHS campaign, which provides meals for NHS workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The track reached number 34 in UK charts and he followed it up with a kids book of the same title, again with all proceeds going to Feed NHS. In November 2020, Lucas released a Christmas version of the song, entitled "Merry Christmas, Baked Potato", with all proceeds this time going to FareShare, a group which redistributes surplus food to front line charities and community groups, and was heavily supported by footballer Marcus Rashford in his campaigns on the issues of homelessness and child hunger in UK.
8. "The Potato Eaters" (1885) is a well known painting, considered by many to be a masterpiece, from which artist?

Answer: Vincent van Gogh

What makes "The Potato Eaters" (1885) such a classic is the fact that van Gogh deliberately chose a subject matter that would be difficult to paint, in order to showcase his talent, and pulled it off with such aplomb. The coarse faces of the painting's subjects, along with the dark colours, draw the viewer in and allow a glimpse into the hardships faced by "the potato eaters".
The painting is housed at the van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
9. In which long running TV show did we see a character dressed as "Spudnik", a cross between a potato and a Russian satellite, for a Halloween party?

Answer: Friends

In this episode from 2001, Chandler was moaning about the pink rabbit costume which Monica had got for him, when in walked Ross dressed as "Spudnik". This prompted Chandler to exclaim that he didn't have the worst costume any more.
Further into the episode, while trying to impress a girl, Chandler and Ross, both still in costume, have an arm wrestling competition. Strange visual image I know, but comedy gold in the hands of the Friends team.
10. Which UK crisp (potato chip) manufacturer was named after a variety of potato?

Answer: Golden Wonder

Golden Wonder, the company, were founded in 1947 in Edinburgh and were the crisp company that brought us Nik Naks, Ringos, Wheat Crunchies and Wotsits, as well as the snack food, Pot Noodle.
Following management buyouts and financial restructuring in the late 20th and early 21st century, Nik Naks and Wheat Crunchies were sold to United Biscuits, Wotsits were sold to the company's biggest rival, Walkers, while Pot Noodle was sold to Best Foods.
