Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When the Titanic hit the iceberg, how fast was she going?

Answer: 20.5 Knots

At 11:40 pm on April 14, 1912, the Titanic collided with the iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean. 20.5 knots is over 23 miles an hour, and was just under the ship's top speed of 23 knots. This was the Titanic's lone voyage, and estimates say it contained over 2200 passengers, with over 1500 lives lost during the tragedy.
2. In which year was Diet Coke created?

Answer: 1982

Diet Coke, which uses artificial sugars, was introduced as a competitor to Diet Pepsi which was first released in 1964 and had much success. The Coca-Cola company already had a diet cola in Tab, but it wasn't as marketable as Diet Coke would soon prove to be, mostly due to having the company name in the brand's title.
3. How many points are there on Kermit the Frog's collar around his neck?

Answer: 11

Kermit was created by puppeteer Jim Henson and made his first appearance in 1955. He originally had no collar, but it was added in 1969 because, without it, he appeared to look more like a lizard. Kermit was one of the original puppets on "Sesame Street" which debuted in 1969.
4. The statement 'Donkeys kill more people annually than plane crashes' is an urban legend.

Answer: True

It has been concluded that this statement can not be proved. While airplane crashes are reported and the statistics are recorded and displayed, the same can not be said for donkey-related deaths. It is inconclusive where this statement started, but many people have a fear of flying, and this might have been something made up to try and alleviate the anxiety of flying.
5. Walt Disney hit it huge in 1928 with the release of the movie "Steamboat Willie." The main character became one of the most famous in the world, and in 1933 he received a staggering 800,000 fan letters. Who is this cartoon character?

Answer: Mickey Mouse

Long before the use of e-mail and social media, if you wanted to get in touch with someone famous, you had to use the good ol' snail mail. 800,000 letters in one year equates to over 66,000 per month. Shirley Temple received 60,000 letters a month in 1936 when she was just 7 years old. Hank Aaron received over 900,000 letters in 1974, the year he broke Babe Ruth's all time home run record.
6. The thyroid cartilage is also called what?

Answer: Adam's Apple

The thyroid is located in the neck. It is an endocrine gland that secretes hormones to help aid and regulate one's metabolism. The term "Adam's Apple" likely came from the story in the Bible where Adam ate an apple from the forbidden tree of the knowledge of good and evil and it became lodged in his throat, creating the lump in his throat.
7. Botanically speaking, a strawberry is not actually a berry, while a banana is a berry.

Answer: True

Strawberries, along with blackberries and raspberries are technically not berries. A berry is classified as a fruit which has no pit and comes from a flower that has one ovary. Strawberries have more than one ovary, thus excluding it from the berry family. Other fruits that are true berries are grapes, tomatoes and blueberries.
8. A group of crows is called a "murder," and a group of owls is called a "parliament." What is the term for a group of ravens?

Answer: Unkindness

In Greek mythology, ravens were considered bad luck and tricksters. The use of "unkindness" to relate to ravens dates back to the 19th century. Ravens have been known to care less for their young than other birds, sometimes abandoning them or driving them out of the nest before they are fully ready, often just as they are barely capable enough to collect their own food. Young ravens usually leave the nest after 5 or 6 weeks.
9. Odontophobia is a fear of what?

Answer: dentists

According to the World Health Organization, as many as 20% of people have some form of fear of dentists. It is characterized by anxiety induced by one's negative thoughts about what might happen during one's visit. Symptoms include sweating, nausea, increased heart rate, and shaking.
10. Astronaut Neil Armstrong first stepped on the moon with which foot?

Answer: left

Armstrong accomplished this feat on July 20, 1969 on an American Spaceflight known as Apollo 11. Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin and Michael Collins were the other two astronauts who accompanied Armstrong, and Aldrin stepped on the moon a few minutes after Armstrong. Collins never set foot on the moon, as he stayed in the command module.

The flight took eight days to complete, and they spent a total of 21 hours on the moon.
