Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Dragon Warrior, also known as "Kung Fu Panda", is an unlikely hero in the animated films made by Dreamworks. Do you know his name?

Answer: Po

Po was a foundling, and was adopted by Mr Ping the goose, who runs a noodle shop.
After a series of mishaps, Po is declared the fabled Dragon Warrior of legend and does eventually save the people of the town from the evil Tai Lung.
"Kung Fu Panda" was originally released in 2008, and featured the voice talents of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, and Dustin Hoffman, among others.
"Kung Fu Panda 2" followed in 2011.
2. Academy Award nominated artist Banksy is world famous for his graffiti style works of art. He painted an iconic image of a giant panda, but what is it holding in its paws?

Answer: Guns

The "Banksy Panda" has a hand gun in each of its front paws. The original piece was painted onto a wall in Paris, and there have been claims that it was actually put there by someone else, and is not a Banksy original, but the iconic image has still become known worldwide as the "Banksy Panda".
Banksy was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Documentary Film category in 2011 for "Exit Through the Gift Shop" which he directed.
Even when he appears on screen in the film, Banksy's face and voice are disguised to preserve his anonymity.
3. Which wealthy New York socialite wrote an autobiography called "The Lady and the Panda" all about her quest to China to bring home a panda cub in the 1930s?

Answer: Ruth Harkness

Ruth's husband Bill had always wanted to go out to China and find pandas, and after he died, his widow decided to fulfill his dream herself.
In 1936, she travelled across China to the Chengdu region and brought home a baby panda. News reports from the time tell how it was fed formula from a baby bottle, and Ruth carried it in her arms during the journey back to the United States.
Eventually the panda was given a home at a zoo in Chicago.
"The Lady and the Panda" was published in 1938, and a book with the same title, retelling the story, and written by Vicky Croke, was published in 2005.
4. Which extremely popular computer game features the race of Pandaren, who inhabit the continent of Pandaria?

Answer: World of Warcraft

The "World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria" expansion pack was first released in 2012. The Pandaren race are anthropomorphic giant pandas.
The "World of Warcraft" game is one of the most successful online computer games ever, with a high of twelve million participants reached in 2010.
5. Picture the scene... A father and son are shopping peacefully when Buddy Holly starts to sing "Just youuuuu knoooowww whyyyyyy" and a large panda appears. It then turns over their shopping cart, stomps on the groceries, and jumps up and down in rage, all because the father refused to buy the "Panda" brand product this commercial is for. What is the product that features in the famous "Angry Panda" commercials from Egypt?

Answer: Panda Cheese

The song used in the series of adverts for Panda Cheese is "True Love Ways", which was a hit for Buddy Holly way back in 1960, when it reached number 25 in the UK Singles Chart.
As well as the "groceries" advert in question, the series features "pizza chef", "hospital bed", "office lunch" and "birthday party" among others.
They have become an internet phenomenon in their own right, and are much more famous than the actual cheese they advertise.
(The Panda Cheese adverts can be viewed on internet sites such as YouTube and are well worth a look :-D )
6. Found in the wild in Peru and Ecuador, what sort of creature is a Panda corydoras?

Answer: Fish

The Panda corydoras is commonly known as the panda catfish. It was thus named because of its colouring; it has pale colouring with black patches around its eyes.
They are fairly common as an aquarium fish, and live quite happily in captivity.
7. During her service in World War II, what type of ship was the USS Panda?

Answer: Tanker

The only US Navy ship to be named Panda during the 20th century, she was an Armadillo class tanker and served in the Phillippines until the end of the war.
In 1946 she returned to the United States and was decommissioned.
8. What is the area of study for the huge ongoing survey known by the acronym PAndAS?

Answer: Outer Space

PAndAS stands for the "Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey" and is a study of the Andromeda galaxy and its near neighbours in space. "Near" is a relative term of course, as the actual area of space under scrutiny is huge, which is why the term "Galactic Archaeology" was coined to describe what the survey is doing.
The project headquarters are at the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics in Canada, and scientists from over twenty five countries are involved in the research.
9. In the UK children's television show, what was the name of the panda who lived in a tree house at the bottom of Sally and Andrew's garden, and worked magic using maths?

Answer: Issi Noho

The name "Issi Noho" came from the labels on the packing crate in which he lived. They had originally said "This Side Up, Use No Hooks" but some letters had washed or torn away to leave Issi Noho.
The programme ran for 52 episodes between 1974 and 1978, and there was also a series of books by Keith Chatfield, some of which are still in print in the 21st century.
10. As well as being home to the district and town of Panda, Inhambane Province is home to one of the last African populations of the endangered dugong. In which East African country are Panda and Inhambane?

Answer: Mozambique

Inhambane Province is in the south east of Mozambique, and Panda is one of twelve districts.
Dugongs are endangered all across their range, and one species, Stellar's Sea Cow, was actually hunted to extinction in the 18th century.
They are also known as sea cows or sea camels, but their closest relative, taxonomically speaking, is the elephant.
