Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The fellow above is called a proboscis monkey by westerners, however, the Indonesians call these handsome fellows "orang belanda". Which group is this name insulting?

Answer: Dutch sailors

The name orang belanda translates into the "Dutch Man" in English. The proboscis monkey's primary habitat is on the island of Borneo primarily in the mangrove forests. As for the Indonesian name, the islanders will tell tourists the monkey's large nose and pot belly reminded them of the Dutch sailors during colonial days.

The large nose of the monkey is theorized to be attractive to the females who have smaller pointy noses. The potbelly is the result of the monkey's vegetation diet.
2. The compound Urushiol makes this plant unpopular with gardeners and hikers alike. Do you recognize which plant this is?

Answer: Poison Ivy

This is Poison Ivy! Poison Ivy, Oak, and Sumac all contain urushiol which is a skin irritant. If caught early enough, urushiol can be washed off with soap and water, however, once it penetrates the skin it can lead to an itchy rash that lasts several weeks.

Not everyone has the same level of sensitivity to urushiol and some people do not have a serious reaction. It is worth noting that urushiol can stay on surfaces for months to years making it possible to create a rash long after an object first comes in contact with it. Contrary to popular belief, the blisters from a poison ivy rash are not contagious and no longer contain the urushiol oil that created them in the first place.
3. Polo has been called the sport of kings due to the many nobles who have played it over the years. Which of the following is NOT true about polo?

Answer: Outdoor polo is played on a pitch about the size of a soccer field.

A polo pitch is much larger than a soccer field, measuring 300 yards by 160 yards. A soccer field is 120 yards long by 75 yards so several soccer fields would fit inside a polo pitch.

Team sports with horseback riders hitting objects have been around for thousands of years. The modern game of polo has its roots in Manipur India from the 1800s. The goal is to hit a small ball with a mallet into the opponent's goal. Each side has four players with specific numbered positions. Number 1 is typically the best offensive player like a striker in soccer. The number 2 player has both offensive and defensive roles to play and is considered the most difficult position. Number 3 is usually the most skilled player, as they organize the attack like a quarterback in football or the point guard in basketball. Number 4, as you might guess, is the main defensive player. While the number 4 player tries to stop the other team from scoring, they also have to be great at passing. There are two umpires on horseback who enforce the rules designed to keep the players and horses safe during a match.
4. If you have played this game before then you will know that it is named after the combination of these two cards which makes a rather unique meld in the game. Which card game is it?

Answer: Pinochle

Pinochle is a German word taken from the French word Binocle which means eyeglasses. The legend goes that the deck of cards used at the time of the game's origins had both the queen of spades and the jack of diamonds in profile so only one eye could be seen. So, combining the two cards gave you two eyes. Pinochle is a game played with a deck of 48 cards where only the ace, ten, nine, and face cards are used with two of each individual card in the deck. All the cards are dealt and then players figure out how many meld points they have and bid to see who wants to be the leader who names trump. Once the leader is established and the trump suit is called, melds are displayed for points. One way points are given is for having an ace, king, queen, or jack of every suit.

A straight flush in a suit is called a run and is valuable both as meld and for controlling trump. After points are given, the players put the cards back into their hands and start the trick portion of the round. There are multiple versions of Pinochle which have different ways to score points, but typically points are earned for having the stronger cards on a trick.

After all the tricks are taken and points are combined from both tricks and meld, if the leader made their bid points, then he or she wins the points. However, if the leader failed to earn the points they bid, they lose the amount they bid. It is a fun game!
5. On October 14, 2012, Felix Baumgartner's freefall speed actually broke the sound barrier before he deployed his parachute!

Answer: True

Felix Baumgartner did indeed break the sound barrier and became the first human to break the sound barrier during freefall. His jump was from an altitude of about 128,000 feet. Felix was in freefall for 4 minutes and 20 seconds reaching a top speed of 833 miles per hour! Probably his biggest challenge was being able to get out of a violent spin while maintaining consciousness. Felix's jump was filmed live.
6. Which Latin American currency, pictured above, has a name that literally translates into the word "weight" in the English language?

Answer: Peso

The picture is of the Mexican peso. The peso currency is also used in Argentina, Chile, Columbia, and even the Philippines. The name of the Mexican peso has its origin from the Spanish dollar coins which were equal to eight silver reals as well as half a gold escudo. When the eight real coin was gold, it was called "pesos oro" while the silver coin was called "pesos plata". The Mexican peso is broken down into 1/100 units called centavos. The Mexican peso is one of the most stable currencies in the world.
7. Originally this breed of lap-dogs could only be owned by members of the Imperial Chinese court. Since their appearance is similar to Chinese guardian lion statues these dogs are sometimes called lion-dogs. Which breed is this?

Answer: Pekingese

Up until the 1860 Opium War, the Pekingese dogs could only be owned by a resident of the Forbidden City in China. When the British and French took over the summer palace in Beijing, five Pekingese dogs were taken and brought to Europe. One Pekingese was given to Queen Victoria, and as a result, the breed's popularity spread. Pekingese have many health problems, in particular, difficulty breathing due to facial structure.

They are also prone to cardiovascular problems including heart murmurs. Pekingese are merry, alert, and protective of the family.

It is particularly important to socialize the puppies early on to help them be more tolerant of strangers. They are happiest when the family is home and they have a warm lap.
8. Which element, with the help of friction, mixes with potassium to light a safety match on fire?

Answer: Phosphorus

So much cool chemistry here! The match head and striking surface both have silicate in them which turns into friction heat when rubbed together. This initial frictional heat changes red phosphorus into white phosphorus vapor which then reacts with potassium chlorate releasing oxygen and, of course, fire! This heat then causes sulfur, also within the head, to catch the wood on fire and allow the match to burn for longer. Typically, matches are also treated with ammonium phosphate which keeps them from relighting once they are put out. Safety matches were a fantastic invention over their predecessor strike anywhere matches. Strike anywhere matches were dangerous to make as the white phosphorus they used was toxic to inhale for the match factory workers who made them. Long term exposure to white phosphorus resulted in a condition called "phossy jaw" where the jaw would painfully rot away. Also, since white phosphorus is extremely volatile, it could spontaneously catch fire just by being exposed to air!
9. Speaking of fire, the capsaicin in these ghost peppers actually chemically burns the mouth which is why they hurt so much to eat them, right?

Answer: False

Capsaicin is an interesting compound that actually binds to the pain receptors which release "substance p", sending a pain sensation to the brain. Pain receptors are wonderful for protecting us when we actually touch something hot like boiling water. However, in the case of capsaicin, there is no physical harm actually being done.

It is a false alarm, but since the brain makes it feel real there can be consequences triggered like nausea and vomiting to remove the perceived poison. Capsaicin is also used as a topical pain cream rub.

When it first goes on it burns for a few minutes. However, over time the substance p will deplete, taking away the sensation of pain from both the cream and the actual injury.
10. Paella is often considered the national dish of Spain. So where does the name "paella" come from?

Answer: The Spanish word for a frying pan

Paella comes from the Valencia region of Spain and translates into English as "frying pan". As the name suggests, it is indeed usually cooked in an especially large, flat frying pan. While the word paella probably comes from the same spelling of a medieval French word, it is also not too far off from "patella" the Latin word for pan. Paella comes in many varieties with rice and usually saffron as the base in all of them. Traditional Paella Valenciana on top of having the rice and many types of vegetables also may have duck, rabbit, or snails. My personal favorite is Paella de marisco which uses seafood instead of the other types of meat. Delicious! A vegetarian version can also be made.
