Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Robert L. May might have been quite a fan of the letter R. What did he invent?

Answer: Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer

He actually included Rudolph in a booklet which was published by the Montgomery Ward department store in 1939. Adaptations approved by the Rudolph Company, LP (the owner of the copyright) have since been made, including the famous song.
2. Which country was first to institute an annual "R U OK" day (in 2009)?

Answer: Australia

R U OK Day falls on the second Thursday of September. The RU OK day organization purports to be aimed at suicide prevention. The day is now international.
3. Which of the following words is a synonym for "reticent"?

Answer: Reserved

Reticent is an adjective that's most often applied to human beings, meaning disinclined to express oneself. Reluctant is an adverb. Risible means laughable or ridiculous.
4. A reticule is a handbag, but if something was described as reticular, what would it do?

Answer: Resemble a net

Both words "reticule" and "reticular" derive from the Latin word "reticulum", meaning " little net". "Reticular" has only been around since the 1950s.
5. The Brothers Grimm wrote the version of Rapunzel from which most modern versions have been adapted. Do you know the author of the version they adapted theirs from?

Answer: Friedrich Schulz

Schulz's version was published in 1790. It was an adaption of "Persinette", by Charlotte-Rose de Caumont de la Force, which was published in 1768, and was an adaptation of "Petrosinella" (1634) by Giambattista Basile. The origins of this story are unknown.
6. What connects Douglas Adams' Thor, a 'colorful' song written by Prince and the story of Noah's ark?

Answer: Rain

In "The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul", the thunder god Thor had at least as many words for rain as Eskimos did for snow. Rain followed him wherever he went. Prince wrote "Purple Rain". Noah survived a flood.
7. Which of the following would not be considered a religion?

Answer: Impressionism

Druze is a Western Asian unitarian religion. Hellenism is the worship of ancient Greek gods. Babism originated in the 19th century in Persia and centres around the belief there'll be a new prophet after Mohammed. Impressionism is an arts movement.
8. Tsar Nicholas II appointed a prime minister in Russia in 1906. Who was this fairly dogmatic and unpopular leader, who was assassinated in 1911?

Answer: Stolypin

Stolypin dealt harshly with revolutionaries, having them hung or transported to Siberia. None of his policies was really successful. He incentivized peasants living in communes to acquire or cordon off their own land plots, hoping to reduce their poverty and gain their support for the tsarist regime. (The peasants live in communes so they could share resources and support each other. His plan failed.) Some people still reckon he could have prevented the 1917 revolution from happening, if given enough time.

He was assassinated in the Kiev Opera house by a revolutionary student on 1st September.
9. Of which creature did the rainbow coloured creator god in Australian Aboriginal mythology have the form?

Answer: Snake

In Dreamtime mythology, the giant Rainbow Serpent lived under the earth and made gorges, mountains and rivers as it emerged from the ground. According to one story, the appearance of a rainbow signifies that the snake is moving from one waterhole to another.
10. It is unlikely pirates said "arrr", but did they really drink rum?

Answer: Yes, because it was cheap

There were pirates, and they drank rum, but Hollywood invented the pirate accent and that they said "arrr". They may, however, have called each other "hearts", short for "stout hearts", as sailors were called.
