Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. ANIMALS: According to legend there is only one phoenix which would certainly make it an endangered species. Which of these birds is endangered?

Answer: Whooping Crane

The whooping crane is endangered mainly because of habitat loss. In 1941, there were only 21 known to exist and through conservation efforts by April of 2007, they numbered 340 in the wild and 145 living in captivity. They remain one of the rarest birds in North America.

The American Bald Eagle was endangered until 1995, the Dodo has been extinct since the 1600s and the Blue-footed Booby is not endangered.

3. CELEBRITIES: Which of the following is NOT a sibling of Joaquin Phoenix?

Answer: Leaf

Leaf is actually a name that Joaquin called himself as a child actor, from the ages of 4 to 15, when he resumed using his birth name of Joaquin. He changed his name to Leaf to be more in line with the nature-themed names of his siblings. His name change was inspired by the hours spent raking leaves with his father.
4. ENTERTAINMENT: In the Marvel Comics Universe, Jean's Grey codename is Marvel Girl or Phoenix. What powers does she possess?

Answer: Telepathic and telekinetic powers

Jean Grey was introduced in 1963 in Marvel Comics' "X-Men." She is an Omega-Level (very powerful) mutant with telepathic and telekinetic powers.

In the "X-Men" film series, she is portrayed by Famke Janssen.
5. FOR CHILDREN: In Harry Potter, Professor Dumbledore's Patronus is a Phoenix. What use for patronuses did Dumbledore invent?

Answer: Sending messages

Dumbledore was worried that messages sent by owls would be intercepted by Voldemort's servants or sympathizers. The benefit of a patronus communication is that the patronus will only give the message to the intended recipient. We first see this method in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", again in "Half Blood Prince" and finally in "Deathly Hallows".
6. GENERAL: The Phoenix Class in Brisbane Australia was a class of what?

Answer: Public transport trams

The Brisbane tram system came under control of the Brisbane City Council Transport Department in 1925 and a modernization program began under their control. Over the years many improvements were made. On September 28, 1962, sixty-five cars were destroyed in a fire at the Brisbane Paddington depot.

The Phoenix Class of eight trams were built from the salvaged parts in 1963. Though the system closed in April of 1969, three of the Phoenix Class trams have been preserved.
7. GEOGRAPHY: The city of Phoenix, Arizona was established in the late 1800s on land that had previously been occupied by the Hohokam people for over 1,000 years. What feature of the Hohokam civilization contributed much to the development of the modern city?

Answer: Development of an extensive canal system

Phoenix was officially recognized as a new town on May 4, 1868. Jack Swilling, the town founder, had suggested the name 'Stonewall', and others had suggested 'Salina'. The community favored 'Phoenix' after Lord Darrell Duppa, pointing to the evidence of the Hohokam civilization in the area, declared that "A new city would spring Phoenix like upon the ruins of a former civilization".

The Hohokam were expert cultivators and have been called the greatest prehistoric farming civilization in the Americas. Indeed, from the period AD 1 - 1450, over 135 miles of irrigation canals were constructed in the region. The modern irrigation system in Phoenix was built on the existing ruins of the Hohokam engineered canal system.
8. HISTORY: The fourth ship to bear the name USS Phoenix was sold to another country after World War II and recommissioned in a different navy. She ended her life in rather tragic and controversial circumstances. "With what name did she go to Davy Jones locker?"

Answer: ARA General Belgrano

The Brooklyn class light cruiser was renamed the General Belgrano after being sold to Argentina. She was sunk on May 2, 1982, by the British submarine HMS Conqueror during the Falklands War with the loss of 323 lives. It has the distinction of being the first ship destroyed by a nuclear-powered submarine.
9. HOBBIES: What fruit do plants of the genus Phoenix produce?

Answer: Date palms

The date palm may be one of the world's oldest food-producing plants and is native to the area that is now Iraq. It is a tree with no branches, topped by large crowns of leafs. There are 13 separate species growing all over the warmer parts of the world.
10. HUMANITIES: The folktales of which country are the source for 'The Firebird' Ballet?

Answer: Russia

The Phoenix (or Firebird) has been a recurring theme in folktales of many cultures. But it was to his Russian folktales that Igor Stravinsky turned for inspiration when writing his Ballet. This piece was included in the Disney animated film Fantasia 2000.
