Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. HUMANITIES: Author Alison Gyger has chronicled an interesting piece of Australia's cultural history. The third book in her series is subtitled "From World War II to War and Peace". What is the title of the work?

Answer: Australia's Operatic Phoenix

Gyger's series of books deals with the development of the Australian Opera Company and the movement by Opera Australia toward being fully professional. This third title covers the post war period from 1948 to 1973.
2. HOBBIES: Which ancient civilization introduced the Phoenix as currency, to mark its entrance into 'modern times'?

Answer: Greek

Just like the Phoenix was reborn from the ashes, so, too, was the currency meant to signify the rebirth of Greece. The coins were introduced in 1828, however, due to a shortage of precious metals on the islands, very few were ever minted.
3. HISTORY: The Phoenix Program, an intelligence-gathering taskforce, was a structure put into place by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States during which war?

Answer: Vietnam War

The main thrust of this operation was between the years 1967 to 1972, however, there had been a similar program in place prior to and beyond this period. The mission worked alongside South Vietnamese Intelligence to 'neutralize', that is, infiltrate, assassinate or capture, VCI (Viet Cong Infrastructure) personnel. Despite this job description, the major function of the taskforce was intelligence gathering.
4. GENERAL: In February 1828, the first American Indian newspaper rolled off the presses and is still published today in New Echota, Georgia. What was the original name of the paper?

Answer: The Cherokee Phoenix

The Cherokee did not have a written language, until Sequoyah, one of their warriors, developed "talking leaves" to represent symbols of spoken Cherokee.
The term 'talking leaves' came from his feelings about 'white man's words' that they "dried up and blew away". It took him twelve years to develop, but once he finished, it was possible for the newspaper to be published.
The paper changed its name in 1829 to 'The Cherokee Phoenix and Indian Advocate'. New Echota was the Cherokee capital; it is now a state park in the state of Georgia U.S.A.
5. GEOGRAPHY: The Phoenix Islands are in which ocean?

Answer: Pacific

The Phoenix Islands are a part of the Republic of Kiribati. The chain consists of eight coral atolls situated north of Samoa.
6. FOR CHILDREN: In the Harry Potter series, what power does the Phoenix Fawkes NOT exhibit?

Answer: He can set things on fire.

Fawkes caught fire and died twice during the series but did not actually make anything else catch fire. In Book 2, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets", Dumbledore said "Fascinating creatures, phoenixes. They can carry immensely heavy loads, their tears have healing powers and they make highly faithful pets". Fawkes' tears saved Harry after he was poisoned by the basilisk fang.

He then carried Harry, Ginny, Ron and Gilderoy Lockhart in a single flight from the Chamber of Secrets. In Book 5, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", Cornelius Fudge and some other Ministry of Magic workers appeared at Hogwarts to apprehend Professor Dumbledore, then take him to Azkaban. Dumbledore magically stunned the Ministry workers and Fawkes flew Dumbledore out of his office to safety.
7. ENTERTAINMENT: Knoebels Amusement Park and Resort in Pennsylvania has a reconstructed ride called the Phoenix. What type of ride is it?

Answer: Roller coaster

The Phoenix is a wooden roller coaster originally known as the Rocket when housed in San Antonio, Texas. Knoebels bought the coaster and relocated it to his park. Today, the Phoenix is ranked one of the ten best wooden roller coasters. It has a double out-and-back layout, features great drops, and airtime-filled hills including a double up, a double down, and bunny hops on the return run to the station.
8. CELEBRITIES: Hans Christian Andersen and Charles Dickens were considered celebrities in their era. Andersen, who authored "The Phoenix Bird Poem", in fact, roomed with Dickens for a while. Dickens, it is rumored, then based a character in David Copperfield after his houseguest. Which character was it?

Answer: Uriah Heep

Heep was known for his insincerity and cloying humility. Andersen had stayed with Dickens for over a month in 1857 despite Dickens' repeated hints that Andersen should leave.
9. Brain Teasers: Four lucky members of the team, Phoenix Rising, each found a golden Phoenix feather over the weekend. From the clues below, can you work out who found the longest feather? Roxymary's feather is not the longest. Smpdit's feather is shorter than Roxymary's but longer than Zonko's. Zonko's feather is shorter than the feather JCSon found.

Answer: JCSon

Roxymary did not find the longest feather (clue 1).
Smpdit couldn't have found the longest feather, because hers is shorter than Roxymary's (Clue 2).
Zonko did not find the longest feather either, because Smpdit and JCSon both found longer feathers (Clues 2 and 3).
That leaves JCSon with the longest feather.
10. Animals: Phoenix Animals located in Alberta, Canada, specializes in which of the following:

Answer: Reproduction of animal skeletons

Phoenix Animals began operating in 2006. It has specialized in the reproduction of animal skeletons using either original or synthetic materials.
