Mixed 15 Q. Difficult Trivia Questions

1. In the National Football League, how many points are awarded for scoring a touchdown?

From Quiz
Just When You Thought You Had All The Answers...

Answer: 6

Six points are awarded when a team advances the football in the opponent's end zone. A successful extra point kick, attempted immediately after the touchdown, adds one other point to the touchdown, which gives the scoring team seven points on the scoring drive.

2. HOBBIES 1: The answer possibilities of this question list four games and the scores of associated "perfect games". Which of them is WRONG?

From Quiz Quizzical Leftovers

Answer: Bridge, 1,480 points

A maximum score in Bridge for an actively played game would be a Grand Slam in No Trump, redoubled, vulnerable (you could get an even higher score by defeating an opponent's game). The player would need to bid and make all 13 tricks against a hand with which the opponents have due cause of suspecting the player not to make his game, all of this in a situation where the opponent is ahead in overall score. This extremely difficult feat would score 880 for the contract, 500 for winning a game, 1,500 for the grand slam and 100 points "insult bonus" for winning against an opponent's double - a total of 2,980 points. I have never heard of this score actually having occurred in competitive play. Most bridge players, when asked about the number they associate with a perfect score or game, would however answer "seven" anyway--any Grand Slam would qualify.

3. This plant grows in the Kalahari desert of Namibia and on the island of Madagascar. It is used medicinally to prevent indigestion, heartburn and rheumatoid arthritis. Name that plant.

From Quiz The Joy of Knowledge 9

Answer: Devil's claw

The name, devil's claw, is derived from the thorny barbs on its unusual fruit. It appears to be covered with numerous small hooks. Herbalists believe it stimulates the stomach to increase production of acid, which improves digestion. Its storage roots contain the active ingredients. Millions of European people today, take devil's claw daily, one tablet with your morning meal, and one with your evening meal. As it promotes acid, it shouldn't be used by sufferers of gastric or duodenal ulcers, nor be used during pregnancy. Although devil's claw has pain-killing properties, it hasn't yet been fully recognised and accepted by the medical profession. It is therefore regarded as merely a herbal supplement.

4. Who were Peepeye, Poopeye, Pipeye and Pupeye?

From Quiz The Joy of Knowledge 8

Answer: Nephews of Popeye

Peepeye, Poopeye, Pipeye and Pupeye were all nephews of Popeye. It was very difficult to tell them apart so it was assumed they were quadruplets. Elzie Crisler Segar's comic strip began in 1919. Olive Oyl had a boyfriend called Ham Gravy, who along with Castor Oyl, Olive's brother, appeared in the original cast. Popeye's debut was on January 1929 when he was hired, by Olive, to sail her ship. She required a discourteous, uncivil, unmannerly sailor and Popeye was just her man. He was to sail Olive and her friends to Dice Island, where they hoped to cheat at a casino. Popeye was dropped from the comic strip as his services were no longer required. Popeye's fans demanded his return and he became a national hit. In 1932, hamburger-munching Wimpy and Popeye's arch-enemy, Bluto, were added to the cast. A six foot, bronze, Popeye statue was located near the Chester Bridge, at the Segar Memorial Park, in 1977, as Elzie Crisler Segar was born in Chester, Illinois on 8 December, 1894. Alas she died at Santa Monica, California, on 13 October, 1938.

5. To which bird family does the robin belong?

From Quiz The Joy of Knowledge 2

Answer: Thrush

The robin usually has a red breast and belongs to the thrush family. Both the sexes are identical and a male will use aggressive behaviour, not knowing if an intruder is male or female. It is up to the female to persist in her approach until a bond is made between the two birds. Young robins lack the distinctive red breast and tend to have a more mottled appearance.

6. Which working-class family resided in the terraced premises of 30, Kelsall Street, Liverpool, England?

From Quiz The Joy of Knowledge

Answer: The Boswells (Bread)

The comedy programme 'Bread' was shown on BBC1 between (1986-1991). It featured Nellie and Freddie Boswell and their five grown-up children, Joey, Jack, Adrian, Aveline and Billy. They enjoyed working the system and accepting state handouts. Freddie was a philanderer who frequently got involved with Lilo Lil when the going got tough while Nellie kept the family together by insisting they gathered around their kitchen table for Catholic prayers before eating their meals. Carla Lane, who created the series, had similar successes with other comedy sitcoms such as 'The Liver Birds' (BBC1 1969-78)and 'Butterflies' (BBC2 1978-82). The Brady Bunch lived at 4222, Clinton Way, Los Angeles, California whereas Hyacinth Bucket resided at Blossom Avenue in England.

The Bab-5 CCG is a very complicated game, and it's taken me over a year to become vaguely accomplished at it. The show is really cool, though. The character dynamics are more complex and developed than those of "Star Trek." Bab-5 was, I have heard, the first show where the episodes are more like chapters of a book than isolated events.

21. The Mayflower brought the Pilgrims to America in the early 1600s. What became of this famous ship?

From Quiz Miscellaneous Madness

Answer: It was dismantled to build a barn.

The "Mayflower" was most likely a three-masted ship with the approximate dimensions of 90-100 feet long and 26 feet wide. It was filthy and severely cramped as it carried a crew of 30 and 102 passengers. Eighteen of the passengers were women, two passengers died en route to the new world and two children were born. The Mayflower stayed in Plymouth during the horrible winter of 1620 that killed half of the colonists. Only four of the eighteen women lived through the winter. The Mayflower returned to England and was no longer seaworthy. It was in ruins and was sold for the lumber. Wood was very scarce in England at that time and the Mayflower was reputedly dismantled to build a barn.

From Quiz General Knowledge I

Answer: Intake, compression, power, exhaust

The four strokes are: INTAKE, COMPRESSION, POWER, and EXHAUST. During the INTAKE stroke, the fuel-air mixture is drawn through the intake valves and into the cylinder by the downward-moving piston. After the piston reaches the bottom of the cylinder and begins moving upward, the COMPRESSION stroke begins. At the top of this stroke, the spark plug or glow plug fires, causing the compressed fuel-air mixture to explode. This drives the piston back down in the POWER stroke. Finally, during the EXHAUST stroke, the piston begins moving upward again, pushing the burned fuel through the exhaust valves and out of the cylinder.
