Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. HUMANITIES: Which nymph was raped by the Greek god, Zeus, which led to the birth of a son called Arcas?

Answer: Callisto

There are a number of versions of this myth. In short, the nymphs were under the auspice of Artemis and they vowed to remain virgins. Zeus disguised himself as Artemis and forced himself upon Callisto. Callisto became pregnant and gave birth to a boy, Arcas, but not before she was turned into a bear, either by Hera, in a jealous rage, or on the orders of Hera.

While Arcas was hunting in the woods he saw a bear rush toward him, not knowing that it was his mother. He drew his bow and arrow to kill the bear.

At this point Zeus intervened and took the arrow from Arcas, then turned him into a bear as well and placed both mother and son safely in the sky where they continue to reside as Ursa Major and Ursa Minor.
2. HOBBIES: What is a collector of teddy bears known as?

Answer: Arctophile

Arctophile comes from the Greek words 'arctos', meaning bear and 'philos', meaning lover. A fusilatelist is a collector of telephone cards, an ephemerist collects printed matter such as bookmarks, posters and catalogues, while a phillumenist gathers match related items such as matchboxes.
3. HISTORY: The brown bear has been adopted as the national animal by which of the following countries?

Answer: Finland

The bear tends to be a strong influence in the culture of nations that have backgrounds rich in fishing and hunting. In Finland the bear is also seen as a personification of the spirits of the nation's forefathers.
The national animals of the rest are: Denmark (mute swan), Iceland (falcon) and Norway (the moose or elk)
4. GEOGRAPHY: On which continent will you find Bere Island?

Answer: Europe

Bere Island is also known as Bear Island and can be found in Bantry Bay, Ireland, west of County Cork. Until 1602 it was in the possession of clan O'Sullivan Bere.
It is a small island, roughly twenty one square miles in size and populated by a little over two hundred people.
5. GENERAL: Ursa Minor and Ursa Major are the two bear constellations in our sky but which children's nursery rhyme is Ursa Major alluded to?

Answer: Hey Diddle Diddle

'Hey diddle diddle
The cat and the fiddle
The cow jumped over the moon
The little dog laughed to see such sport
And the dish ran away with the spoon.'

The spoon is Ursa Major, which means great bear. It's also called 'The Big Dipper'. Spoon ... Dipper (get it).

The rhyme was created as a reminder to farmers that planting season was upon them. In the process it is also a celebration the constellations.

The cat is Leo.
The fiddle is Lyra, named after the lyre and one of the constellations recorded by Ptolemy
The cow is Taurus.
The Moon is ... well, it's the Moon.
The little dog is Canis Minor.
The dish is the Cluster. The Cluster is named after the goblet that belonged to Apollo, the god of light and the sun.
6. FOR CHILDREN: In a noted children's rhyme who is the bear who had no hair?

Answer: Fuzzy Wuzzy

Despite being called a rhyme this little ditty is closer to a tongue twister. The last line also uses a very clever play on words.
'Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear
Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair
Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn't very fuzzy, was he'?

The final (was he) sounds out as wuzzy.
7. ENTERTAINMENT: Of the five 'Pokemon' bears which one strongly resembles a teddy bear?

Answer: Teddiursa

Teddiursa will eventually develop into an Ursaring. Its diet is predominantly honey and it has the power to create its own honey from fruit.
8. CELEBRITIES: In the television comedy 'B.J. and the Bear' what type of creature is 'Bear'?

Answer: Chimpanzee

'B.J. and the Bear' first aired in 1979 and starred Greg Evigan as Billie Joe McKay, a truck driver with the Bear as his companion. The inspiration for 'The Bear's' name was supposedly Paul 'The Bear' Bryant who had been a longstanding football coach for the University of Alabama.

The monkey's real name was 'Sam' and he was cared for by the Wildlife Animal Way Station in Los Angeles. Unfortunately he passed away in the early 1990's as result of kidney failure.
9. BRAIN TEASERS: Solve the following wordwise: THEABEARWOODS

Answer: A bear in the woods

The words 'A bear' are surrounded by the words 'the' and 'woods', making it 'A bear' in 'the woods'.
10. ANIMALS: The koala is an Australian bear?

Answer: False

It is true that the koala is native to Australia, however, it is a marsupial (whereas bears are mammals) and not a bear at all. The bear attachment to its name came about as a result of its appearance being similar to that of a teddy bear.
