Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Australia's highest waterfall?

Answer: Wallaman Falls, QLD

Located in the Girringun National Park west of Ingham, Wallaman Falls is a total of 305 metres making it Australia's tallest waterfall. This includes a single drop of 268 metres. It is fed by Stony Creek, a tributary of Herbert River. (Some sources claim Wallaman Falls is closer to 340 metres in length.)

Some speculation has 'Tin Mine Falls' near Mt Kosciuszko as the largest waterfall in Australia but it is not confirmed. Tin Mine Falls is also seasonal.

2. Closest to the township of Jabiru are which two well known waterfalls?

Answer: Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls

Both Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls are located in the World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory.

Twin Falls is known as Gungkurdul in the local Aboriginal dialect.
3. Stevenson Falls is one of the largest waterfalls in which state?

Answer: Victoria

Although Victoria has some of Australia highest mountains in Australia and plenty of rain (when not in drought), it does not have any large single-drop waterfalls. The largest waterfall is Stevenson Falls and is only about 84 metres long over several cascades. It is located 6 km from Marysville, northeast of Melbourne. The falls are floodlit in the evenings which makes it a worthwhile visit after dark.

These falls should not be confused with the Stevenson Falls at Barramunga in the Otway Ranges, also in Victoria.
4. Located in Morton National Park in New South Wales and named after a former New South Wales governor is which popular waterfall?

Answer: Fitzroy Falls

Named by Charles Throsby in the 1850s after Sir Charles Augustus Fitzroy (NSW Governor from 1846 to 1855). Fitzroy Falls is easily accessible by road and is located approximately 150 km south of Sydney. It plunges in a single drop of 81 metres into Yarrunga Valley.
5. Tasmania's most popular waterfall, discovered in 1856 and located within Mt Field National Park is which waterfall?

Answer: Russell Falls

Russell Falls is a two-tiered waterfall, originally named Brownings Falls but was changed around 1884. The falls were depicted on a Tasmanian 4d stamp in about 1900. Lady Barron Falls and Horseshoe Falls are upstream of Russell Falls and are all accessible via the same walking track.

6. Located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, this spectacular four-tiered waterfall is approximately a total of 80 metres in height.

Answer: Mitchell Falls

Mitchell Falls which cascades from a height of about 80 metres is Western Australia's second highest waterfall after King George Falls. It is located well off the Gibb River Road and is quite remote but well worth the trip.
7. Murray Falls in the Upper Murray National Park is located in which state?

Answer: Queensland

The Murray Falls is located 36 km from Tully in Queensland, the wettest area of mainland Australia. Even though the name may be confusing, it is not located anywhere near the Murray River which borders New South Wales and Victoria.
8. Located 100 km west of Sydney in New South Wales is a waterfall which bears the same name as the town closest to it.

Answer: Wentworth Falls

Wentworth Falls was named after Charles Wentworth who along with Gregory Blaxland and William Lawson, were the first new settlers to cross the previously impenetrable Blue Mountains.
9. This waterfall plunges 220 metres into Wollomombi Gorge and is located east of Armidale in New South Wales.

Answer: Wollomombi Falls

Wollomombi Falls plunges into Wollomombi Gorge and is located in the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park which is home to many waterfalls. The park was officially determined in 1985 and is now a World Heritage Site.

Wollomombi is sometimes spelled Wollombi but is probably confused with the area called WOLLOMBI near Cessnock in NSW, several hundred kilometres to the south.
10. A popular stop for visitors to Cairns in Queensland is this waterfall named after the river which feeds it and is viewable from a tourist train.

Answer: Barron Falls

Barron Falls is fed from the Barron River and resides within the Barron Gorge National Park. Barron River was named after T.H. Barron, a police clerk from Brisbane. Much of the water that flowed over Barron Falls was diverted to a hydro electricity plant.
