Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which traditional county of England would you find Sheffield?

Answer: Yorkshire

Sheffield is now in South Yorkshire. Hallamshire is a traditional region including western Sheffield, but was never a county. It is also the wealthiest area in the north of England. Although Sheffield is in Yorkshire, it has always been overshadowed: first by York, and more recently by Leeds. As a result, there is little support for a Yorkshire parliament in the city.
2. Historically, which of these was Sheffield known for producing?

Answer: Cutlery

Sheffield has been making high quality cutlery since at least 1272. With the industrial revolution, iron and then steel manufacture became important. Sheffield today makes more steel than ever, but the steel industry employs very few people.
3. Which tributary of the River Don flows under central Sheffield?

Answer: Sheaf

The Sheaf was probably the border of the post-Roman Celtic kingdom of Elmet, holding out against the invading Anglo Saxons. It gave Sheffield its name (originally Scafeld), but is now sadly polluted upstream and hidden from view in the city centre.
4. How many English cities are larger than Sheffield?

Answer: 3

Officially, Sheffield is England's fourth largest city, after London, Birmingham and Leeds. Amazingly for such a large city, the remote countryside of the Peak District lies a mere five miles west of the city centre.
5. Which of these bands formed in Sheffield?

Answer: Def Leppard

Along with Pulp, Human League, Moloko, ABC, All Seeing I, etc. Most of Gomez went to university in Sheffield, the Supernaturals wrote 'Sheffield Song', and Aphex Twin is signed to Warp Records, based in Sheffield. Also in Sheffield is the famous 'Gatecrasher' clubnight and the Leadmill, often voted best venue for live music in the UK.
6. The Castle Market in Sheffield is built over the ruins of a castle.

Answer: True

Sheffield was in existence by Saxon times, and soon after the Norman Conquest, it merited a castle. It was demolished in 1688 after being badly damaged in the Civil War, but some remains still exist in chambers under the market.
7. Which influential and experimental housing scheme lies on a hill immediately above Sheffield station?

Answer: Park Hill

The Park Hill housing complex was supposed to be an exciting new type of apartment living - 'streets in the sky'. The idea seemed good at the time, but unfortunately, design mistakes and poor maintainance have led to a pretty unpleasant environment. The others are all later housing schemes, on the many hills south and east of central Sheffield.
8. In which year was the battle of Orgreave contested on the outskirts of Sheffield?

Answer: 1984

The Battle of Orgreave was part of the miners' strike, where miners fearful of their livelihoods and communities opposed Thatcher's attempts to break unions and introduce market forces to then nationalised industries. A recent film documentary was made of the event, including a full-scale reenactment of the clash between the workers and police.
9. Sheffield Wednesday is a successful sports team. They were founded in the 1820s to play which sport?

Answer: Cricket

Originally, Wednesday (named for playing their matches on Wednesdays) were a cricket team, and only took up football to keep their team together over the winter. Sheffield's other leading football team is United, but also in the city is Sheffield FC. Founded in 1857, they are the oldest football club in the world.
10. Which award winning museum opened in 2001 in Rotherham, just outside Sheffield?

Answer: Magna

The former steel works were transformed into a 'science adventure centre', which has since attracted hundreds of thousands of viistors, and won the UK's top architectural award, the Stirling Prize. The others are all in Sheffield itself.
