1. From the top of Mauna Kea to sea level, what is the elevation of Mauna Kea?

Answer: 13,000 feet

Mauna Kea is probably the coldest part of the Big Island. I even saw a patch of snow believe it or not!
2. What is so special about Mauna Kea?

Answer: The observatories

Mauna Kea has over 13 observatories. In the video that they showed, (which was filmed in the 1980s) it said that they had 13 with many more to come.
3. Waikiki beach and Honolulu are located on the Big Island.

Answer: False

Waikiki and Honolulu are located on O'ahu. Pearl Harbor is also located on O'ahu.
4. Akaka Falls is located on the Hilo side of the island.

Answer: True

Rainbow Falls is also located on the Hilo side of the island.
5. The City of Refuge's Hawaiian name is Pu'uhonua O Honaunau.

Answer: True

In ancient Hawaii, if you committed a crime and your penalty was death, you would go to this city and if you reached it before you were caught, you were forgiven.
6. A tsunami hit here, wiping out a school and killing 23 students, 4 teachers and other residents.

Answer: Laupahoehoe Point

The tsunami hit on April 1, 1946 at about 7:00 a.m. There is a monument that bears the names of people who lost their lives in the tragedy. I know someone who lives there and he said that his friend's grandpa survived by holding on to a guava tree. The grandpa has never gone back since. Who can blame him?
7. What is the name of the volcano on the Big Island?

Answer: Kilauea

As you drive through the volcano park, you see the signs marking the dates of the different lava flows. There was a fresh lava flow in 2004.
8. Sea turtles are often spotted in Hawaii.

Answer: True

They can be spotted at most beaches. I saw them at the black sand beach and in the City of Refuge. I also saw one while I was snorkeling and was in touching distance before I realized it was there.
9. In Hilo, there is a street with this type of tree and each one is dedicated to a famous person. What is this tree called?

Answer: A banyan tree

There were a lot of them dedicated to certain people but the only one that I recognized was Amelia Earhart.
10. What is the rainiest city in Hawaii?

Answer: Hilo

Hilo has an average of 128 inches of rain each year.
