Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We exit our time machine and see we are near a city named Barbourville, on September 19, 1861. Eight hundred Confederate soldiers from General Zollicoffer's brigade are attacking a US camp, named Dick Robinson. Who is the Federal commander?

Answer: Isaac J. Black

The battle of Barbourville was the first battle on Kentucky soil during the Civil War. General Zollicoffer's Confederates routed Black's detachment and continued the campaign, which threw a scare on Federal commanders. The operations were stopped at the Battle of Camp Wildcat in October.
2. Now, our time machine opens again and we exit it. We are surely in the Shenandoah Valley, on May 25, 1862. Confederate troops under "Stonewall" Jackson are attacking Nathaniel Banks' Union soldiers, attempting to dislodge them from which city?

Answer: Winchester

The First Battle of Winchester was a great victory for the South. General Jackson's troops captured the city, Banks' wagon train and hundreds of prisoners, inflicting terrible casualties to their opponents at a "bargain price" with under 400 killed, wounded and missing.

The stunning CSA victory resulted in McDowell's corps being not detached to McClellan, who was threatening Richmond, the Confederate capital, from the Peninsula.
3. The time machine transports us to another place, named Corinth, Mississippi. Union troops under "Old Brains" Halleck are prepared to enter the city, since the Confederate troops under "Old Bory" Beauregard have evacuated it. On what date did it happen?

Answer: May 30, 1862

After the Battle of Shiloh (April 6, 1862) CSA troops withdrew at Corinth and US General Henry Halleck advanced to the city. However, their progress resulted in a siege and, while they managed to capture the city, the Confederates retreated unmolested, making the affair an inconclusive one.
4. We again exit our time machine, once more in Virginia. It is May 2, 1863. We observe "Stonewall" Jackson's troops marching in a forest, on the move to attack O.O. Howard's XI Corps, Army of the Potomac. Where are we?

Answer: Chancellorsville

In the Battle of Chancellorsville, General Robert E. Lee won the Confederacy a great victory, which is often styled as his masterpiece. The flank attack surprised Joseph Hooker's Federals and allowed Lee to drive them from their position with heavy losses. However, Lee paid a terrible price: the death of "Stonewall" Jackson.
5. Our time machine opens again. We are in Corydon, Indiana, on July 9, 1863. The Indiana Legion, commanded by Lewis Jordan, is prepared to meet a Confederate raider, but who is he?

Answer: John Hunt Morgan

The battle occurred in the middle of Morgan's Raid through Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio. Morgan defeated the Indiana Legion and held the city briefly, before passing into Ohio, in fact disobeying the orders given to him by his superior, CSA General Braxton Bragg.
6. The time machine has now brought us to Louisiana, on May 8, 1864. The Battle of Mansfield is being fought. On the Union side, General Nathaniel Banks. On the Confederate side, a general who is son of a former US president. Who is he?

Answer: Richard Taylor

Richard Taylor was the son of the US President Zachary Taylor, a national hero after the Mexican War and one of the few presidents who died while in office. Richard Taylor was a subordinate of "Stonewall" Jackson, until he was stricken by rheumatoid arthritis. He was transferred in Louisiana where he defeated Banks at Mansfield.
7. Our journey continues and the time machine stops in Georgia, on May 9, 1864. We are at Rocky Face Ridge, the first battle of the Atlanta Campaign. A Union corps is moving fast to the outskirts of Resaca, in fact outflanking the Confederate position. Who commands this USA Corps?

Answer: James Birdseye McPherson

McPherson's movement caused great consternation to the southern commander, Joseph E. Johnston. Sherman's skillful maneuvers resulted in Johnston's evacuation of the place, which was yielded to the Federals at a very low cost.
8. For another time, the time machine stops, letting us observe another battle. We are in Missouri, on September 27, 1864. CSA General Sterling Price's troops are attacking Fort Davidson, held by Union troops under General Thomas Ewing, Jr. With what other name is the battle known?

Answer: Battle of Pilot Knob

Sterling Price launched a raid in order to reoccupy Missouri for the Confederacy. The battle of Fort Davidson was the first significant engagement of the raid. Although Price took the fort, the Union forces managed to withdraw in good order, so that they could prevent his seizing of St. Louis or Jefferson City.
9. When we next exit our time machine, peace is in the air. We are in North Carolina, On April 26, 1865. A Confederate general is surrendering to a Union general, but who to whom?

Answer: Joseph Johnston to William Sherman

Johnston's surrender, coupled with Lee's on April 9 practically brought the Civil War to an end. It was the largest surrender of Confederate soldiers and one of the largest surrenders on American soil.
10. Our time machine stops for last time on June 23, 1865 in Doaksville, in today's Oklahoma. The last surrender of the Civil War is taking place. Who was the last CSA general to surrender?

Answer: Stand Watie

Stand Watie was a Cherokee Indian. When the Civil War started, he allied himself with the Confederacy, as the Five Civilized Tribes did. He led several raids on Union territory. His surrender ended the military operations of the Civil War.
