Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Around 1500 BC, an Indo-European speaking tribe invaded India. What was the name of these invaders?

Answer: Aryans

For this reason, most of the people of India speak languages that have a common ancestor with most of the European languages. Some words are very similars to those of some European tongues. The Dravidians were the "native" inhabitants of India. They weren't Indo-Europeans.
2. In 390 BC Rome was sacked by a bellicose tribe. What was the name of this people?

Answer: Gauls

Rome never forgot this affront and took her revenge about 350 years later, with the conquest of the whole of Gaul by Julius Caesar.
3. After the conquest of all North Africa the Muslims started to conquer Europe. What was the year of the conquest of the Visigothic Spain?

Answer: 711

Their expansion was stopped in 732 by Charles Martel (Martel meaning 'hammer' in old French) between Tours and Poitiers in France ... and again in 739, also in France. Charles Martel was the grandfather of the famous Charlemagne.
4. Richard Lionheart is a famous King of England that lived in the 12th century. What language did he speak?

Answer: French

Richard was part of a French dynasty (Plantagenets). His mother was French and he spent most of his life in France. Moreover, the official language of the English court had been French since 1066 and it lasted for centuries. The English monarchy's motto is still French nowadays (namely : "Dieu et mon droit")
5. In 1214 a battle occured in a place named Bouvines in France where the English, the French, the Germans, and the Flemings were battling. Who was victorious?

Answer: The French

The French (under the lead of their king Philippe II Auguste) were victorious against a coalition about three times more numerous composed of the English led by the king John Lackland, Germans led by Emperor Otto IV, and Flemings led by the Count of Flanders and the Count of Boulogne. That defeat weakened the English king and allowed his barons to impose Magna Carta on him in 1215.
6. What was the first capital of the USA *after* the constitution was ratified ?

Answer: New York

The original capital of the USA was Philadelphia. After the constition was ratified New York City became (for a brief spell) the capital of the young nation, where President George Washington was inaugurated on 30th April 1789.
7. Napoleon left a profound imprint on his time. He started as a 'nobody' and eventually became an Emperor that ruled most of Europe. In which year did he become Emperor?

Answer: 1804

More exactly 2nd December 1804, in Notre-Dame in Paris.
8. In 1904-05, Russia was easily defeated at war by which of these nations?

Answer: Japan

That was the first time in the modern times that a non-European nation had beaten a European nation.
9. During WWI, about how many British soldiers were killed (including those missing, presumed dead)?

Germany : 67 millions
France : 39.6 millions (only country of those 4 countries that was devastated by the war)

Germany : 1,800,000 dead soldiers
France : 1,450,000 dead soldiers
UK : 805,000 dead soldiers (about 940,000 if we add the dead soldiers from the Commonwealth (Canada, Australia, etc ...)
USA : 116,000 dead soldiers
Italy : 680,000 dead soldiers
Austria-Hungary : 1,200,000 dead soldiers
Russia : 1,700,000 dead soldiers
10. Hitler was obsessed with the destruction of USSR. What was the date of the start of Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of USSR ?

Answer: 22nd June 1941
