Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tears of happiness

Answer: :'‑)

Most emoticons appear as faces on their side. In this case, you can see a set of eyes, a tear from one eye, a nose, and a smiling mouth. If something is really, really funny, additional smiles can be added like this:

:'-)))
2. Sad, angry

Answer: :-(

In this case, you can see a pair of eyes, a nose, and a frown. It can also be used to indicate a pouting individual. This one was developed using ASCII characters by Scott Fahlman in 1982. He is also credited with developing the basic smiling face, or :-).
3. Surprise, shock

Answer: :-O

Here, a set of eyes and a nose lies next to a big round-shaped mouth. It can also be used to represent a yawn or boredom. Other emoticons that express surprise include >:O, 8‑0, :-0, and :‑o. In the list of Eastern emoticons where the figures are not usually rotated sideways, surprise is represented by o_O.

The Eastern emoticons usually focus more on the eyes. This is because in the west, the entire face typically expresses emotion in daily interactions, while in Asia, emotions are mainly expressed through the eyes.
4. Kiss

Answer: :-*

This is a tricky one to interpret. It seems to be a pair of eyes and a nose with a smooch out of the corner of the mouth. If you check the emojis, or digital pictures that are also common to express emotion in electronic text, one is a round face that is winking with puckered lips and a heart at the corner of its mouth.

This seems to match this emoticon for "kiss". Another way to represent "kiss" is with a lower-case x, such as :x.
5. Wink

Answer: ;-)

This is a good-natured emoticon. Here, one eye of the pair seems to be winking next to a nose and a smile. An alternate of this emoticon is simply ;) with the dash, or nose removed. Interestingly, the first emoticon that historians have discovered in text was this one. It is in an 1862 speech by Abraham Lincoln that contains the following:

applause and laughter ;)
6. Embarrassed, blushing

Answer: :$

This is meant to be a cheeky and playful emoticon. It can also represent blowing a raspberry (vibrating the tongue in the lips while blowing out air). Another way to represent embarrassment is with a double-grimace and a smile, like this:

://)
7. Skeptical, annoyed

Answer: :-/

Here, you can see a pair of eyes and a nose with a mouth held in a slanting straight line. It can also be used to represent being undecided, uneasy, or hesitant. The mouth that slants from the lower left to the upper right represents a grimace in most Western emoticons.
8. Elvis Presley

Answer: ~:‑\

Here, you can see Elvis' trademark hair and imagine the way that he held his mouth when he sang. It should be noted that the mouth in this emoticon is slanted from the upper left to the lower right. This is the opposite to the mouth that appears in grimacing emoticons where the mouth slants from the lower left to the upper right. Other celebrities to have their own emoticons include:

Ronald Regan ,:-)
Bill Clinton =:o]
The Pope -)
John Lennon //0‑0\\ (one of only a few Western emoticons that are read as presented instead of being rotated)

Homer Simpson and Santa Clause also have their own emoticons, but they can't be placed on Fun Trivia due to their HTML format. If you are interested in those, references to them are available online.
9. Partied all night

Answer: #-)

Here, the eyes have been replaced with the # sign. This indicates a bleary feeling in the eyes. There is still a smile, though, so apparently they had a good time. If they were sick after partying all night, you might see the emoticon for that:

:‑###..

Or, if they are still feeling drunk and confused, you might see this:

%-)
10. Cheerleader

Answer: *\0/*

The emoticon for cheerleader shows a person cheering in the centre, with their arms up and two pom-poms waving in the air. This is one of only a few emoticons that are not rotated, but are shown in the natural vertical. Others include:

Cheer \o/
Salute o7
John Lennon //0‑0\\
Horror, disgust, dismay, extreme sadness v.v
Surprise, shock O_O
Crab, lobster V.v.V
