Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We'll start with ranks. Now, in a dwarf clan, what is the difference between a 'grimstborith' and a 'grimstcarvlorss'?

Answer: 'Grimstborith' means clan chief, while 'Grimstcarvlorss' means 'arranger of the house'.

This translation was given at the back of 'Eldest'. Anhuin was the grimstcarvlorss of the unfortunate clan, Durgrimst Az Sweldn rak Anhuin, which had suffered great losses at the hands of the Forsworn.
Undin tells Eragon about them at Tarnag.
2. The dwarfs believe that they are of stone, and must be buried in stone after their death. So great is their belief in this, that if a dwarf should fail to bury a fellow knurlan in stone in the absence of injury or adversity, he is ostracised. What is the mythological reason for dwarfs being buried in stone?

Answer: The dwarfs believe that if they are buried in stone, they will be able to enter Helzvog's stone halls

Helzvog, Sindri, Guntera and Kilf are all gods. I would tell you what each is the god of, but I'm afraid that might give away subsequent answers.

Gannel tells Eragon of this dwarf custom, along with others, in Celbediel.
3. Scientifically, oxygen supports burning and hence fire cannot burn without air. The dwarfs explained this phenomenon in terms of two brothers, who loved each other greatly and were inseparable. The god of air and the heavens always fed his brother, the god of fire. Name these two gods.

Answer: Urur and Morgothal

Again, Gannel told all this to Eragon in Celbedeil.

Morgothal's palace, the sun, had its place in the daytime sky, and the sparks of Morgothal's forge (the stars) could be seen at night. Moreover, Urur and Morgothal combined their skill to give rise to the race of dragons.
4. Guntera is the king of the gods. He fought the giants that inhabited the land, slew them all and created Alagaesia from the bones of the largest giant. Due to this, the dwarfs adore Guntera the most, out of all the gods.

Answer: False

The dwarfs actually adore Helzvog. After the giants' demise and the creation of Alagaesia, it was not inhabited by people. Helzvog was the only god who felt that the land ought to be repopulated and secretly created the first dwarf from the roots of a mountain.
5. Name the only god or goddess who restrained himself/herself and did not create a race to people Alagaesia.

Answer: Kilf

After Helzvog created dwarfs, Guntera created elves to control Alagaesia in his stead, Urur and Morgothal gave rise to dragons while Sindri, goddess of the earth, brought forth humans from the soil. Kilf was the one to restrain herself, although it does make one wonder where the Ra'zac, Lethrblaka and Urgals came from.
6. One final question on dwarf theology. Which of the gods took Kilf as his mate?

Answer: Guntera

Kilf was the goddess of lakes, streams and oceans. As such, a rlationship with the god of fire, Morgothal, would have been rather short-lived.
7. Now, onto dwarf language. What does 'Shrrg' mean?

Answer: Wolf

One of Eragon's guards from Tarnag was Shrrgnien, whose name literally meant 'Wolfheart'.
8. What does 'Hrethcarach' mean?

Answer: Shadeslayer

One of Durgrimst Az Sweldn rak Anhuin calls Eragon this in Tarnag.
9. What does 'Jurgencarmeitder' mean?

Answer: Dragon Rider

Again, one of Durgrimst Az Sweldn rak Anhuin calls Eragon this in Tarnag.
10. In order for one clan to declare durgrimstvren against another, a certain number of plucked beard hairs must tied to an iron ring and thrown in front of the opposing durgrimst. How many beard hairs does this require?

Answer: Three

'Durgrimstvren' means 'Clan War'.

Again, the same member of Durgrimst Az Sweldn rak Anhuin does this because of Eragon, in Tarnag.
11. Which of the following is NOT a dwarf clan?

Answer: All of these are dwarf clans

While Orik does not specifically mention Durgrimst Urzhadn, we are told that urzhadn are a species of bear unique to the Beor mountains. Orik also tells us that a clan is named after each animal unique to the Beors.
12. Name the clan which controls Tarnag.

Answer: Durgrimst Ragni Hefthyn

Durgrimst Quan certainly lives in Tarnag, but does not control it due to their small numbers.

'Ragni Hefthyn': River Guard.
13. Another species unique to the Beors are dragon-like flying serpents. In the human language, they are known as 'wind-vipers'. What do the dwarfs call them?

Answer: Fanghur

Fanghur are the beings whom Saphira and Eragon fought close to Tarnag.
14. Now, onto craftsmanship. How long does it take to make a horn bow?

Answer: Ten years

Orik tells Eragon this while sailing from Tarnag to Hedarth on the Az Ragni.
15. I will now tell you a word from the ancient language, which you must translate into the DWARF LANGUAGE. Translate 'Alf'.

Answer: Vanyali

This was a slightly tricky one.

In 'Eldest', on page two of the chapter 'On the Crags of Tel'nair', Oromis mentions that Brom was a 'Vinr Alfakyn', which means 'Elf Friend'. Hence, 'Alf' means 'Elf'. 'Elf' in dwarvish is 'vanyali'.

Also, it's given that 'alf' is 'elf' on http://www.smtenterprises.com/AALC.html.
