Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which book contained these chapters? "Hear You Loud and Clear" "Choice of Weapons" "Holiday Task" "Reception Committee" "Facts and Figures" "The Finger on the Trigger" "Night Passage" "The Elegant Venus" "Close Shaves" "Dragon Spoor" "Amidst the Alien Cane" "The Thing" "Mink-Lined Prison" "Come into My Parlour" "Pandora's Box" "Horizons of Agony" "The Long Scream" "Killing Ground" "A Shower of Death" "Slave-Time"

Answer: Doctor No

'Doctor No' was the sixth Bond novel, first published in 1958, and the first to be made into a film.

When it was adapted to film surprisingly little of the original storyline remained. In the book, the Doctor was a millionaire escapee from the Chinese Tongs, whereas the film made him into a nuclear scientist working for SPECTRE.

My own most memorable chapter is 'A Choice of Weapons', where M instructs Bond to change his sidearm from his favoured Beretta .25. The Armourer (Q in the films), describes Bond's Beretta as a "Ladies' gun" and encourages him to adopt the gun most associated with 007, the Walther PPK.
2. Which book contained these chapters? "Scissors Cut Paper" "Curtains for Bond" "The Impossible Mission" "Dikko on the Ginza" "Magic 44" "Tiger, Tiger!" "The Death Collector" "Slay It With Flowers" "Instant Japan" "Advanced Studies" "Anatomy Class" "Appointment in Samara" "Kissy Suzuki" "One Golden Day" "The Six Guardians" "The Lovesome Spot" "Something Evil Comes This Way" "Oubliette" "The Question Room" "Blood and Thunder" "Obit:" "Sparrows' Tears"

Answer: You Only Live Twice

'You Only Live Twice' was the twelfth book, published after Ian Fleming's death, in 1964.

Although 'You Only Live Twice' was to be followed by two more books, ('The Man With The Golden Gun' and 'Octopussy and The Living Daylights'), it is believed that Ian Fleming tried for the second time to kill off Bond at the end of the story.

The conclusion of the SPECTRE / Blofeld trilogy, one of the funniest moments of the novel is the discussion between Bond and Tiger Tanaka about swearing. Whilst Tiger insists that there are no real swear words within the Japanese language, Bond expresses his surprise at "how any self-respecting man can get through the day without his battery of four-letter words".
3. Which book contained these chapters? "The Red Carpet" "Interview With M" "A Visiting-Card" "The Big Switchboard" "Table Z" "Mister Big" "No Sensayuma" "True or False?" "The Silver Phantom" "Allumeuse" "The Everglades" "Death of a Pelican" "'He Disagreed with Something That Ate Him'" "Midnight Among the Worms" "The Jamaica Version" "The Undertaker's Wind" "Beau Desert" "Valley of Shadows" "Bloody Morgan's Cave" "'Good Night to You Both'" "Terror By Sea" "Passionate Leave"

Answer: Live and Let Die

The second book, published in 1954, 'Live and Let Die' is a pretty gripping story, if a little dated now.

Bond renews his acquaintance with Felix Leiter of the CIA as part of an epic duel leading him from New York to Ian Fleming's beloved Jamaica. Leiter is only in a total of five of the books, but was a feature of most of the films in the early years.

Bond later returns to Jamaica in four more of the other thirteen books ('Dr No', 'For Your Eyes Only', 'The Man With The Golden Gun' and 'Octopussy and The Living Daylights').
4. Which book contained these chapters? "Roseland" "The Slaughterer" "Post-Graduate Studies" "The Moguls of Death" "Konspiratsia" "Death Warrant" "The Wizard of Ice" "The Beautiful Lure" "A Labour of Love" "The Fuse Burns" "The Soft Life" "A Piece of Cake" "'B.E.A. Takes You There ...'" "Darko Kerim" "Background to a Spy" "The Tunnel of Rats" "Killing Time" "Strong Sensations" "The Mouth of Marilyn Monroe" "Black on Pink" "Orient Express" "Out of Turkey" "Out of Greece" "Out of Danger" "A Tie With A Windsor Knot" "The Killing Bottle" "Ten Pints of Blood" "La Tricoteuse"

Answer: From Russia With Love

Book number five, published in 1957, 'From Russia With Love' ended with Fleming's first attempt to kill off 007. Caught by surprise by Rosa Klebb, Bond is almost killed with of all things a poisoned knitting needle!

The book renews Bond's battle with SMERSH, after his anti-smuggling operations in 'Diamonds Are Forever', pitting him against the impressive trio of Rosa Klebb, Red Grant and Alexei Kronsteen.
5. Which book contained these chapters? "Secret Paper-Work" "The Columbite King" "'Belly Strippers', etc." "The 'Shiner'" "Dinner At Blades" "Cards With A Stranger" "The Quickness of the Hand" "The Red Telephone" "Take It From Here" "Special Branch Agent" "Policewoman Brand" "The ********" (A bit too easy if that's left in!) "Dead Reckoning" "Itching Fingers" "Rough Justice" "A Golden Day" "Wild Surmises" "Beneath the Flat Stone" "Missing Person" "Drax's Gambit" "'The Persuader'" "Pandora's Box" "Zero Minus" "Zero" "Zero Plus"

Answer: Moonraker

Chapter 12 was of course titled 'The Moonraker', the title of the third book, published in 1955.

Still very much with the Cold War feel of the early books, Bond thwarts the plans of the evil Sir Hugo Drax to blow up London with an ICBM he is building for the British. And en route wins himself a few thousand pounds in a very high stakes game of Bridge.
6. Which book contained these chapters? "Seascape with Figures" "Gran Turismo" "The Gambit of Shame" "All Cats Are Grey" "The Capu" "Bond of Bond Street?" "The Hairy Heel of Achilles" "Fancy Cover" "Irma La Not So Douce" "Ten Gorgeous Girls" "Death for Breakfast" "Two Near Misses" "Princess Ruby?" "Sweet Dreams - Sweet Nightmare!" "The Heat Increases" "Downhill Only" "Bloody Snow" "Fork Left For Hell!" "Love For Breakfast" "M en Pantoufles" "The Man From Ag. and Fish." "Something Called 'BW'" "Gauloises and Garlic" "Blood-Lift" "Hell's Delight, etc." "Happiness Without A Shadow?" "All The Time In The World"

Answer: On Her Majesty's Secret Service

Book number eleven, published in 1963, 'OHMSS' sees Bond back on the trail of Blofeld.

Going undercover as a genealogist, Bond discovers that his family coat of arms are "Argent on a chevron sable three bezants". Upon being informed that a bezant is a golden ball, he comments drily "That certainly is a valuable bonus".
7. Which book contained these chapters? "'Take it Easy Mr. Bond'" "Shrublands" "The Rack" "Tea and Animosity" "SPECTRE" "Violet-Scented Breath" "'Fasten Your Lap-Strap'" "'Big Fleas Have Little Fleas ...'" "Multiple Requiem" "The Disco Volante" "Domino" "The Man From The CIA" "'My Name is Emilio Largo'" "Sour Martinis" "Cardboard Hero" "Swimming the Gauntlet" "The Red-Eyed Catacomb" "How To Eat A Girl" "When the Kissing Stopped" "Time For Decision" "Very Softly, Very Slowly" "The Shadower" "Naked Warfare" "'Take it Easy Mr. Bond'"

Answer: Thunderball

The ninth book, published in 1961, 'Thunderball' resembles the film of the same name the closest because the book was based on a screen treatment by McClory, Whittingham and Fleming.

Most importantly, 'Thunderball' introduces Bond's Nemesis, Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the mysterious genius at the head of SPECTRE.
8. Which book contained these chapters? "'Can I Help You?'" "Attentat!" "'Pistols' Scaramanga" "The Stars Foretell" "No. 3 1/2 Love Lane" "The Easy Grand" "Un-Real Estate" "Pass the Canapes!" "Minutes of the Meeting" "Belly-Lick etc." "Ballcock, and Other, Trouble" "In a Glass, Very Darkly" "Hear the Train Blow" "The Great Morass" "Crab-Meat" "The Wrap-Up" "Endit"

Answer: The Man With The Golden Gun

The thirteenth book and the last full-length novel, published in 1965 after Ian Fleming's death.

Starting with the bizarre attempt of Bond to assassinate M, the book returns to the old Cold War theme, with Bond being recycled against the Russians. Once again Bond finds himself playing secretary to the villain while he waits for an opportunity to foil his plans and kill him.
9. Which book contained these chapters? "Reflections in a Double Bourbon" "Living It Up" "The Man With Agoraphobia" "Over the Barrel" "Night Duty" "Talk of Gold" "Thoughts in a D.B.III" "All to Play For" "The Cup and the Lip" "Up at the Grange" "The Odd-Job Man" "Long Tail on a Ghost" "'If You Touch Me There ...'" "Things That Go Thump in the Night" "The Pressure Room" "The Last and the Biggest" "Hoods' Congress" "Crime de la Crime" "Secret Appendix" "Journey into Holocaust" "The Richest Man in History" "The Last Trick" "T.L.C. Treatment"

Answer: Goldfinger

Book number seven, published in 1959, and probably a bit of a giveaway with a chapter called 'The Odd-Job Man'.

With Bond as an established and rounded character by this point, Fleming pitted him once more against the American gangs, but this time with their unholy alliance with the foreign banker of SMERSH thrown in for good measure.

Sadly, many of the great lines and scenes from the book never made it to the screenplay. I guess the prospect of Odd-Job eating a cat probably wasn't thought to be a real crowd-pleaser.
10. Which book contained these chapters? "The Pipeline Opens" "Gem Quality" "Hot Ice" "'What Goes On Around Here?'" "'Feuilles Mortes'" "In Transit" "'Shady' Tree" "The Eye That Never Sleeps" "Bitter Champagne" "Studillac to Saratoga" "Shy Smile" "The Perpetuities" "Acme Mud and Sulphur" "'We Don't Like Mistakes'" "Rue De La Pay" "The Tiara" "Thanks For the Ride" "Night Falls in the Passion Pit" "Spectreville" "Flames Coming Out of the Top" "'Nothing Propinks Like Propinquity'" "Love and Sauce Bernaise" "The Job Comes Second" "Death is So Permanent" "The Pipeline Closes"

Answer: Diamonds Are Forever

The fourth book, published in 1956, and a departure away from the Cold War and high-stakes counter-espionage.

Although the storyline of the book was entirely sacrificed when it was made into a film in 1971, this was still at the stage where there was at least some resemblance between the book and the film of the same title. Consequently, Tiffany Case, Shady Tree and the awesome Wint and Kidd were all taken to the screen, albeit in significantly different roles in the story.

Sadly, although she appeared in the film, Plenty O'Toole was not a character in the book.
