"Ghost Story" by Peter Straub Trivia Quiz

I read this book when I was a teenager and recently re-read it. It's billed as one of the scariest books ever and it's not quite that but it is a fun read.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the prologue we learn of a man who has kidnapped a little girl. What is the name of that man?

Answer: Don Wanderley

In the prologue, Don is travelling across the country with a mysterious young girl who he has kidnapped. We don't find out too much about her but we do find out that Don is both scared and feeling guilty for what he's done. He tries to find out about her and asks her about her family and her name. She seems not to be afraid of him at all, at some points even mocking him.
2. What is the name given to the group of old men who meet to tell each other stories?

Answer: The Chowder Society

The Chowder Society is a group of five old, influential men who meet up to tell each other stories. They dress up in their finest clothes, drink whiskey and have a strict rule about who can join their group. They are an exclusive club who don't invite other people to join and don't allow their wives to join, although they are allowed to bring them food and drinks.

At their meetings they tell each other stories about things they have done or things that have scared them. A year ago one of their club members died at a party and since that time, the surviving members have been experiencing nightmares.
3. Eva Gallo is known by a number of other female names and forms. These woman share the same initials. What are they?

Answer: A. M.

It turns out that many years ago the group of five men accidentally killed a woman named Eva Gallo and decided to get rid of the body. The shape-shifting entity who was Eva makes itself known to the men in a variety of different female forms with different names that all start with the initials A-M. Edward Wanderley, the group member who died at the party, was writing a book about an actress named Ann-Veronica Moore. Don Wanderley and his brother David both fell in love with a woman named Alma Mobley. David apparently died by suicide. Lewis' wife died during an evening with a young girl named Alice Montgomery.

A young woman named Anna Mostyn is new to town and people start dying.
4. After Edward's death, who was the next of the exclusive story-telling club to die?

Answer: John Jaffrey

Dr. John Jaffrey hears voices in his head that are compelling him to head into town toward a bridge. He heads out in cold winter weather not dressed well and seemingly not lucid. Some of his neighbours see him and try to approach him but he only sees terrifying hallucinations.

He heads to the town bridge and jumps to his death into icy waters. His death is ruled a suicide. Don arrives in town at John's funeral.
5. Where does the book take place?

Answer: Milburn, New York

Milburn is described as idyllic but is of course a town where terrifying and mysterious events occur. One of the first signs that something is amiss is on a farm where animals are killed. The bodies are removed of their blood. There are a lot of mysterious deaths, there are fires and the town is hit with a terribly cold and snowy winter.

The sheriff drinks too much and there is no shortage of extra-marital affairs.
6. An honorary member of the story-telling club has written a novel. What is it called?

Answer: The Nightwatcher

Don Wanderley is the nephew of the deceased Edward Wanderley. Don is invited to the town by the older men because they are scared and feel that he might be able to help them. Don is a writer just like his uncle and has written a novel called "The Nightwatcher" that is a fictionalized tale of his relationship with an enigmatic woman named Alma Mobley. Don is given entry into the club when he tells his story about Alma, a woman who seduces him but has a dark side to her.

She also seduces his brother David who goes on vacation with her and ends up dead.
7. Sears and Ricky share a profession. What is it?

Answer: Lawyer

Sears and Ricky are both lawyers. John is a doctor, Edward is a writer and Lewis is a retired hotel owner. Sears and Ricky work together and are the two of the group of older men who last the longest against the shape-shifting enemy. They are the ones who tell Don about their encounter with Eva Gallo.

They also come into contact with a mysterious young woman in town named Anna Mostyn. Anna approaches them for work and becomes their new secretary. Unbeknownst to them at the time is that Anna (check those initials!) is the shape-shifter and will bring nothing but terror to them.
8. Stella Hawthorne is kidnapped and killed by the shape-shifters.

Answer: False

Stella is Ricky's wife. She is a beautiful woman who loves her husband but has many affairs. She is also not happy that she is excluded from their meetings. As Ricky and Sears head off to meet the shape-shifter and try to kill it, Stella decides to head out to help them. She is kidnapped but manages to escape after stabbing her kidnapper with a hatpin.
9. What is the name of the fictional villain who is used to terrorize the protagonists?

Answer: Dr. Rabbitfoot

Don is writing a new novel and the villain in his novel is Dr. Rabbitfoot. After Don comes to town he seems to set off a series of events that are similar to the action in his new novel. His character Dr. Rabbitfoot is seen by people in the town. He is also heard by people in the town, often leading a group of musicians playing music.

The musical parade consists of apparitions of people who have died and are used to scare and antagonize people.
10. What is the last animal form the entity takes?

Answer: Wasp

The shape-shifter takes on animal forms after the human form is killed. After Eva is killed, a lynx is seen. The men who killed Eva believe the lynx is Eva. After they kill the latest incarnation of the evil, Anna Mostyn, a bird is seen. After Don kidnaps the little girl, eventually he sees that it is Eva and kills her.

She turns into a wasp and stings at his hand but he is able to kill the wasp and put an end to the evil.
