Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When the elves were awoken at Cuivienen, this elf was chosen among the Vanyar to travel to Valinor as an ambassador for his people. Later, he would become the High King of all the elves. Who was he?

Answer: Ingwe

Ingwe spoke so powerfully after his return to Middle-Earth that every one of the Vanyar followed him to Valinor. He lived at the foot of Taniquetil, where Manwe dwelled. He would never return to Middle-earth.
2. The ambassador for the Noldor was which elf, who would later become the first High King of the Noldor?

Answer: Finwe

The members of Finwe's group of elves who followed him to Valinor were known as the Noldor, and they were Aule's favorite group of elves. Finwe would be High King for many years, until he was killed by Morgoth at Formenos, which was the first killing to ever take place in Valinor.
3. The final ambassador was this elf, who never made it back to Valinor. His people were by far the slowest to reach the Western shores, and he fell in love with a Maia and stayed in Middle-earth. Who was he?

Answer: Elwe

Elwe, also known as Elu Thingol, fell in love with Melian the Maia. He became King of all Beleriand, and ruled it for many years. However, he detested the Noldor after he learned about the Kinslaying at Alqualonde and refused to help against Morgoth. He would eventually be slain by dwarfs, in a dispute over the Nauglamir.
4. When Finwe was slain by Morgoth, his eldest son in anger left Valinor to return to Middle-earth. He and his seven sons swore to destroy anyone who dared to keep a Silmaril. Who was this elf?

Answer: Feanor

Feanor's pride was the Silmarils, the jewels which were said to hold the light of the Two Trees. However, the lies of Morgoth turned Feanor against his brothers and the Valar, and caused the Exile of the Noldor as well as the Doom of Mandos.
5. While Feanor was known as the greatest child of Iluvatar, his brother was mightier in combat, even wounding Morgoth seven times. Who was he?

Answer: Fingolfin

Fingolfin and Feanor were half-brothers, as they had different mothers. Finwe was the only elf to marry twice, as his wife refused to be reincarnated. This brought the hatred of Feanor onto the children of Indis, Finwe's second wife. After the death of Feanor, Feanor's oldest son Maedhros gave up the title of High King in favor of Fingolfin, to thank Fingolfin's son Fingon for rescuing him from the torment of Morgoth.

When Fingolfin challenged Morgoth to single battle, it was said that it was the first time that a member of the Valar had ever known fear. Morgoth would never heal from that battle, and would walk with a limp for the rest of his life.
6. After Fingon fell in the Battle of Unnumbered Tears, the title of High King of the Noldor passed to his brother, who fell along with his city in the Fall of Gondolin. Who was he?

Answer: Turgon

Turgon ruled the hidden city of Gondolin, which was hidden from Morgoth due to the power of Ulmo. When Maeglin betrayed the city to Morgoth, Turgon was killed when the great tower of Gondolin fell on his head.
7. After the death of Turgon, the High Kingship passed to the son of Fingon, who dwelt with Cirdan in a small refuge on the Isle of Balar. He was much more influential in the Second Age, when he, along with Elendil, struck down Sauron. Who was he?

Answer: Gil-galad

Gil-galad courted the enmity of Sauron when he forbade Annatar, Sauron in disguise, from entering his kingdom. He continued to share friendship with the Men of Numenor, and fought with the host of Elendil against Sauron. Gil-galad's parentage is disputed, as noted by JRR Tolkien himself have him as a son of Fingon, as well as Orodreth, amongst other possibilities.
8. This elf, the first King of Greenwood, was slain in battle against Sauron, when he refused to follow the lead of Gil-galad, and the other better-armed Noldor, and instead rushed into battle with the entirety of his Silvan and Sindarin army. Who was he?

Answer: Oropher

Oropher became the King of those elves who did not want to stay under Noldorin rule. His son Thranduil became King of Mirkwood after him, and his grandson Legolas would be part of the fellowship of the ring.
9. This elf, Finarfin's only daughter, marched to Middle-Earth in the hopes of ruling a kingdom. Prideful and arrogant, she refused the summons of the Valar in the First Age and found herself exiled from Valinor. Who was she?

Answer: Galadriel

Galadriel's ban was only revoked by the Valar when she refused the One Ring, offered to her by Frodo Baggins. This was a sign that she had repented and grown wiser; she no longer craved power.
10. While one of Earendil's sons chose to become mortal and become King of Numenor, the other chose to stay an elf, and would later serve as Gil-galad's herald. Who was he?

Answer: Elrond

Elrond advised Isildur to destroy the ring at the end of the Second Age, but Isildur refused. Throughout the Third Age, Isildur's heirs would spend a time in Imladris, but none did for as long as Aragorn, who become a foster-son to Elrond. Aragorn would later marry Arwen, Elrond's daughter.
