Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Give a man a fire and he's warm for a day, but set fire to him and he's warm for the rest of his life." In which book did these words appear?

Answer: Jingo

The 21st book of the Discworld series starts with an island rising from the sea between Ankh-Morpork and Klatch. Both places lay claim to it, resulting in a mobilisation for war. The main characters in this book are Lord Vetinari and Sam Vines, with Carrot and Leonard de Quirm playing their parts.
2. "It is said that your life flashes before your eyes just before you die. That is true, it's called life." What book did these words come from?

Answer: The Last Continent

In the 22nd book of the Discworld series, the story starts a few weeks after the events of "Interesting Times" (the 17th book). Rincewind is magically transported to the continent of XXXX also known as Fourecks, by mistake. The result is, to my mind, the funniest book in the Discworld series.
3. In what book by Sir Terry would you see the words, "Time is a drug. Too much of it kills you"?

Answer: Small Gods

"Small Gods", the 13th novel in the Discworld series, is one of the few stand-alone novels in the series. It tells the story of the God Om, and his relationship with his (possibly) only follower Brutha. Unfortunately, Om has appeared as a tortoise. The book satirises religious institutions, people, practices, and the role of religion in politics
4. The words "In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded" are found in which book?

Answer: Lords and Ladies

"Lords and Ladies" is the 14th book in the series. It and starts at the end of "Witches Abroad", the 12th novel, when the witches arrive back in Lancre. Following an argument with Granny Weatherwax, Magrat (should have been Margaret, but her mother couldn't spell) moves into Lancre Castle, with King Verence, but not in the same room, so as to avoid scandal. The book features witches, elves, and a dwarf playwright.
5. What book would I be reading if I came across this one liner? "The Duke had a mind like a clock and, like a clock, it regularly went cuckoo."

Answer: Wyrd Sisters

"Wyrd Sisters", the 6th novel in the Discworld series, features the three witches, Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, Magrat Garlick, and of course not forgetting, Greebo, the most evil cat in the world (named one of my cats after him). Also included is the dwarf playwright Hwel (Shakespeare, but on a smaller scale).
6. "It would seem that you have no useful skill or talent whatsoever," he said. "Have you thought of going into teaching?" In what book will you read this line?

Answer: Mort

"Mort", the 4th book in the series, introduces Death in detail, a 7ft tall skeleton, with a scythe. Mort is taken on as Death's apprentice. Mort eventually takes over Death's duties, with unusual results.
7. "We who think we are about to die will laugh at anything." What book can these words be found in?

Answer: Night Watch

The 29th novel in the Discworld series sees Sam Vimes being transported back in time while pursuing Carcer Dun, a notorious criminal. He meets his younger self (using another name), and eventually trains himself in police work.
8. The line "Nanny Ogg looked under her bed in case there was a man there. Well, you never knew your luck," is found in what book?

Answer: Lords and Ladies

I had to include another quote from "Lords and Ladies". Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax are two opposites. But characters like these make the Discworld novels work.
9. Sir Terry wrote this one liner in what book? "Real children do not go hoppity skip unless they are on drugs."

Answer: Hogfather

The 20th novel in the Discworld series sees Death taking over as the Hogfather (Santa Claus of Discworld). The auditors have decided that the Hogfather does not fit in with their views of the universe; they hire the assassins guild to inhume him, and he goes into hiding. It also introduces the "Oh God of Hangovers" Bilious. How many of us have called on him in the mornings?
10. Where in the discworld series do you find this? "Lots of people would be as cowardly as me if they were brave enough."

Answer: The Last Hero

In the 27th novel in the Discworld series, Fingers Mazda originally stole fire from the Gods; the Silver Horde, led by Cohen the Barbarian, decide to return it, with interest, in the form of a large pack of Agatean Fire Clay. The heroes themselves are disillusioned with the way their lives have turned out. Having conquered an Empire, they have nothing left to do but to die in comfort, and they are angry for having to be allowed to grow old.
