Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the cause for the fall of the Deikan Empire back in the old world?

Answer: Their army deserted to go goldhunting

When gold was discovered in Kagwher, the citizens of Deika automatically believed that God had intended for them to have it, but had just made a mistake and placed it in Kagwher instead. They sent an army out to retrieve the gold, but the soldiers realised that goldhunting was more profitable than fighting, so they deserted.

The Empire could not believe this, so sent a second army out to force the first back into service. Instead, the second army joined the first as deserters and traded in their swords for a shovel and pick.

The Empire was absolutely gobsmacked, and sent yet another army out to punish the deserters, but once again this army became goldhunters themselves. In the end, the Deikan Empire had no army to defend itself.
2. What is inside the wooden chest Althalus opens in Maghu, but he doesn't realise the significance of it?

Answer: Paper money

Althalus tries to rob a wealthy merchant, but when he opens the chest where the merchant keeps his assets, all the thief can find is pieces of paper with a strange symbol on them. Not coming from a civilised world, Althalus doesn't realise that it is money, and walks away in disgust...from a fortune!
3. What is the name of the Arum chief Althalus robs for only a few coppers and silvers?

Answer: Gosti

Althalus spends the whole winter befriending Gosti, upon hearing of his supposed immense wealth. Seeing his opportunity, Althalus slips into Gosti's treasure room late at night and opens every single money bag he can find, only to discover that they are filled with small copper coins and a handful of silver coins. Gosti's immense wealth was a lie.
4. The Arum chief Althalus robbed was nicknamed 'Large Belly'.

Answer: False

His nickname was actually 'Big Belly'. His clansmen gave him this name because he ate continually, and as a result was the fattest man Althalus had ever seen. The only time Gosti didn't eat was when he was asleep.
5. The Arum chief Althalus robbed had a cousin. What was his name?

Answer: Galbak

Galbak always stood watch over Gosti, ready to protect him at any given moment. Unlike Gosti, Galbak was tall and muscular, and Gosti's clansmen were visibly apprehensive of this giant. Galbak was the only Arum that Althalus thought would pose a threat to his cunning scheme.
6. What was the name of the man who kept the camp where Althalus first met Ghend?

Answer: Nabjor

Nabjor was a true friend of Althalus, yet they rarely saw each other. Nabjor's camp offered everything for a traveller - a warm fire, good ale, steaming meat, and even a bit of 'company' for the lonely man. When Althalus returned to the camp several thousand years later and found it in ruin, he was genuinely saddened by the loss of his friend, especially when he found Nabjor's old bronze axe that he used to use for security.
7. Which of these was not a member of Althalus' 'group'?

Answer: Pekhal

Pekhal worked for Ghend, Althalus' arch nemesis. He was a savage, who was scarcely human. His sadistic nature made him a threat to Althalus, but his lack of intellect was a weakness easily exposed. When Pekhal was captured by the Arums, it took a team of six oxen to drag him back to their castle.
8. Which city is Andine the Arya of?

Answer: Osthos

Before she became Arya, her father, the Aryo, was involved in a bitter fued with the Aryo of Kanthon. War broke out, and the Aryo of Kanthon hired a group of Arums to assassinate Andine's father. The Arums, who were always prepared to fight for money, were led by a young warrior named Eliar, who actually managed to kill Andine's father. Andine hated Eliar for this, but when both of them were recruited by Althalus, her convictions softened, and she soon fell in love with the young Arum.
9. Which of these was not an Arum chief?

Answer: Yuedon

Yuedon was in fact an Exarch, a person of high religious status. Exarch Yuedon would prove to be a vital asset to Althalus and his campaign, including helping Bheid get over his serious bout of depression.
10. What religious rank did Bheid pretend he was for a time?

Answer: Scopas

Bheid had serious objections to lying about his status when Althalus first pitched the idea to him, but the thief overrode all of Bheid's objections and finally bullied him into doing so, saying it would greatly help them to defeat all evil if he did.
11. Which Arum clan-chief do all of the other clan-chiefs defer to since he is the oldest?

Answer: Delur

Delur is eighty years old, yet still leads his men into battle. Despite the fact that all the other chiefs defer to him, he is not well liked in Arum society, but they put up with him because he has the biggest army. He likes to refer to himself as 'Chief of the clan-chiefs'.
12. Which two clan-chiefs are related?

Answer: Twengor and Laiwon

Laiwon is Twengor's nephew. Usually, clan-chiefs aren't related, but back in the old world, the two clans were once one, only separated by a deep valley. When the snow came, it blocked the valley and made it impassable, meaning that the clan had no contact between the two halves. As a result, what was once one clan is now two.
13. Who performs the same task for Ghend as Eliar does for Althalus - doorkeeper?

Answer: Khnom

Khnom controls the network of doors to Everywhere and Everywhen for Ghend, as does Eliar for Althalus. Khnom's doors are located in Nahgharash, whereas Eliar's doors are located in Dweia's House.
14. Who killed Salkan, Bheid's young shepherd friend?

Answer: Yakhag

While attempting to defend Bheid, Salkan grabs Eliar's sword and confronts the monster Yakhag. With cold indifference, Yakhag smoothly runs his sword through Salkan's small body. Enraged by this ruthless killing, Bheid uncharacteristically picks up Elair's sword and runs it into Yakhag's black armour and through his body.

Afterwards, Bheid is beside himself with grief for killing someone when he is forbidden to by religious law.
15. And finally, who does Sergeant Khalor marry?

Answer: Alaia

Alaia is Eliar's mother, and Sergeant Khalor has had feelings for her ever since he first met her, but they never came to fruition before because Alaia started 'walking out' with Eliar's father, so Khalor stepped back. Now, with his father long dead, Eliar manages to bring his still-beautiful mother and his life-long mentor together.
