Yutaka admits to Shinji Mimura that he has had a crush on Izumi Kanai for a long time. Shinji can't understand why he doesn't like one of the more attractive girls in the class, like Mitsuko or Takako, but Yutaka says that he thinks Izumi is beautiful in everything she does.

It is this conversation which reveals the most information to us about Izumi, as she is not given much backstory within the story.

Haruka played on the volleyball team with her friend Yukie Utsumi. She was quite tomboyish, and was good at sports. At one point in the story, Haruka is described as looking almost like the man in a couple, while she is stood next to Chisato Matsui.

Haruka was the tallest girl in the class, at 172cm, and was taller than many of the boys in the class. Her height is mentioned a number of times, particularly when descibing her in comparison to the other girls in the lighthouse. Haruka's height helps her to be a valuable member of the volleyball team.

Yutaka was one of the unlucky members of the class who received a useless weapon, although he probably would have been unable to use a stronger weapon against a student anyway, as he is descibed as being a gentle person. Yutaka is later given Shinji's weapon, when Shinji tries to prove he is on Yutaka's side, but Yutaka refuses to take it.

Yutaka's height is also mentioned a number of times, particularly by Toshinori Oda, who recognises Yutaka as a fellow diminuitive person. Yutaka is the shortest boy in the class, but he never lets this get to him, as he is far less concerned with things like this than Toshinori.

Yukie and Haruka were best friends, and Haruka helped Yukie recruit the other girls for the lighthouse. The two girls had similar interests, including volleyball, and were both well liked within the class, though Yukie was the more popular of the two because she was the class representative.

Yutaka was known for being the class clown, and although he knew it was unlikely to happen, he thought it would be fun to be a comedian. It is suggested at one point in the book that he become a writer, but Yutaka does not really like this idea.

Haruka took Yukie's Browning High Power 9mm Pistol after Satomi shot Chisato and Yukie. Haruka had been relatively passive during the battle, but she got involved when Yukie was killed, and tried to stop Satomi.

Yutaka is shot in the back by Kazuo, as he and Shinji are standing together, realising how foolish they had been for doubting each other. The bullets exited from Yutaka's front, and went into Shinji's body. Yutaka essentially stopped Shinji from being killed by the first burst of fire, allowing him time to set off his bomb.

Answer: Satomi Noda

After Haruka grabbed Yukie's gun, she was shot in the side by Satomi. Haruka then shot Satomi in the head, causing Satomi to reflexively pull the trigger again, shooting Haruka. This event made Satomi and Haruka the only people on the island to manage to kill each other.

In the film version, Mizuho Inada and Kaori Minami also kill each other, but this because their stories are cut for timing reasons. Also in the film, the girls in the lighthouse die in a different order.
