Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where does the first scene of the movie take place?

Answer: School

At the beginning of the movie, we see a classroom in which kids are giving presentations on Franklin D. Roosevelt. The first kid we see is a red-haired, white girl named Annie. This is presumably meant to be a red herring, fooling us into thinking that girl would be the main character because in previous Annie movies, she was always a white girl with red hair.

After she is done, the teacher says "Annie B." you are next, and introduces us to the actual main character, and African American girl with black hair.

She gets the class involved in her presentation and says that the 1930s were "Just like now, without the internet."
2. Annie goes to a restaurant called Domani's every Friday for what reason?

Answer: To find her parents

Annie's parents left her at a foster home and then they left her a message on the back of a receipt at Domani's restaurant saying that one day they would return there for her. Annie believes this, so she goes to that restaurant every Friday hoping they will come back. Sometimes the restaurant owner give her free food (she doesn't buy it). However, her parents never return for her and we never find out what happened to them.
3. Which word describes Annie?

Answer: Illiterate

Although Annie goes to school and although she is seen reading a note from her parents, she can't read. Other people read things to her and she memorizes them, and then she recites what she has memorized while holding the note and making it look like she's reading it. Eventually, she's forced to confess this secret to what becomes her adopted father, who founds a literacy program for kids at the end of the movie.
4. Who's running for mayor?

Answer: Will Stacks

Oliver Warbucks does not appear in this movie. He has been replaced with Will Stacks, a successful cell phone salesman who wants to run for mayor. At first, his mayoral campaign is a disaster. However, he becomes more popular after saving Annie from being hit by a truck.

His assistants, Guy and Grace, suggest that he invite Annie to come live with him. He reluctantly does so and Annie, desperate to get away from Miss Hannigan, says that Will can keep her as long as he likes. It doesn't go very well at first because Will, despite being polite to Annie, doesn't like her cooking.

However, as the movie progresses, Will changes. He starts to care less about becoming mayor and more about becoming Annie's adopted father. At one point in the movie, he tells Guy that he will do whatever it takes to become mayor.

He ends up regretting that he told Guy that. It leads to Guy doing something terrible to Annie, which leads to Will having to drop out of the mayoral race to take care of Annie, and to prove his innocence to Annie.
5. Who runs the foster home?

Answer: Colleen Hannigan

Like in other versions of "Annie", the 2014 version has a mean tyrant named Miss Hannigan running the foster home. Unlike other versions of "Annie", her first name isn't Agatha. In this one it's Colleen. Also unlike other versions of "Annie", this version gives us more of Miss Hannigan's back story. She was a famous singer in the 1990s. Then, her career ended and she became bitter and she drank a lot of alcohol. She takes her anger out on the orphans, making them do chores and telling them never to get their hopes up, telling them that what happened to her will happen to them. At one point in the movie, she and Guy arrange for Annie's parents to be kidnapped. However, Lou has a crush on her. He and Will help Miss Hannigan change and become a good person. She then tells Will about the kidnapping and helps stop the kidnappers. At the end of the movie, she adds comedy to the last 2 songs in the movie.

Rooster and Lily do not exist in this version of "Annie".
6. Which is not a song in this version of "Annie"?

Answer: Something Was Missing

Only three songs from previous versions of "Annie" are in this one. One of them is "Maybe", which is basically the same song as in all the movies except in this version, all the orphans sing a part of the song. Another is is "It's the Hard Knock Life", which is mostly the same song as always except they're in a foster home not an orphanage, so they sing "No one cares for you a bit when you're a foster kid" instead of "No one cares for you a smidge when you're in an orphanage" and at one point, the song is interrupted as one of the orphans asks what a "Hard Knock Life" is and another orphan answers her question. The other one is "Tomorrow". We see Annie walking through the streets singing it near the beginning of the movie. At the end of the movie, we hear the song again, this time with nearly every character in the movie singing it together and Miss Hannigan continuing to sing it after it's over.

All the other songs from previous versions of Annie aren't in this one. There are some familiar titles in the soundtrack like "Little Girls", "I Think I'm Gonna Like it Here", "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile" and "I Don't Need Anything But You", but those are all completely different songs musically and lyrically, only the titles of the songs are the same as previous movies.
7. In the scene where we see the unsuccessful auditions for the role of Annie's parents, one of the unsuccessful couples sings "The sun'll come out..." when?

Answer: Pronto

When Miss Hannigan holds auditions for people to pretend to be Annie's parents, it goes hilariously badly at first. In possibly the funniest scene in any version of "Annie", we see one of the couples doing a very unconvincing job trying to be Annie's parents, then, to attempt to prove that they are Annie's parents, they say that they will tell Annie to sing their special song, which goes "The sun'll come out, pronto! Bet your bottom dollar that, pronto!" Needless to say, that couple failed the audition.
8. This character starts off as one of Will's assistants, then he turns into a villain. Who is he?

Answer: Guy

Guy starts off as Will's campaign manager. He gives Will advice on how to boost his popularity so he can earn enough votes to become mayor. His advice turns out to be good advice at first and it does indeed help Will. The most important piece of advice that Guy gives Will and to invite the girl that he rescued into his home and to raise her like he's her father.

This boosts Will's popularity by a lot. However, Guy later turns into a villain, albeit it's not entirely his fault. One he sees Michael J. Fox endorsing Will's opponent, he asks Will how badly he wants to win. Will gives an answer that implies he would do anything to win the election. Will ends up regretting that he said that.

As the movie progresses, Will starts to care less about becoming mayor and more about Annie.

However, Guy secretly arranges to have impostors claim to be Annie's parents show up right before the day of the election, making it appear that Will found Annie's parents and ensuring that Will becomes mayor. Unbeknownst to Will, Guy and Miss Hannigan secretly hold auditions for the role of Annie's parents.

When they find a couple that can pass for Annie's parents, Guy tells Will that he has found Annie's parents and he shows them to Will and Annie. They take Annie into their car. Later on, Miss Hannigan confesses to Will that those weren't her parents. Guy tries to convince Will that he's making a mistake trying to rescue Annie, but Will fires him. Guy then tries to convince Grace to talk to Will for him, but Grace knocks him to the ground with one punch. Meanwhile, Annie quickly figures out that her "parents" are not really her parents. She uses her popularity by banging out the car door and asking for help. This causes people to take pictures of her and it helps Will find her.
9. Does Miss Hannigan get punished for her role in the kidnapping?

Answer: No

Like in the 1982 version of "Annie", Miss Hannigan is considered redeemed after she helps end the kidnapping. She does not get arrested (like in the Broadway show) or sent to a mental hospital (like in the 1999 movie). Instead, after Annie is rescued, she just hangs around and interrupts the remaining songs in the movie with some comedic singing.

Guy doesn't get arrested either. He just gets fired and punched.

The only people who do get arrested are the impostor parents.
10. In this version of "Annie", Sia sings "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile". Where is she seen in the movie?

Answer: Animal Shelter

Sia helped create the soundtrack for this movie by re-arranging many of the songs to fit with the year 2014, instead of being consistent with the 1930s like the previous "Annie" movies. She also sings a new version of "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile", from off-camera. The song is not sung by a radio DJ and sung again by the orphans like in previous versions of "Annie".

In the movie, she gets a cameo appearance where she doesn't talk, but she is seen at the animal shelter.
