Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which quote from 'The Treasure of the Sierra Madre' is correct, as it was said in this Humphrey Bogart movie?

Answer: "I don't have to show you any stinkin' badges."

Humphrey Bogart made 'The Treasure of the Sierra Madre' in 1948. He and two other men go into the hills of Mexico to mine gold. They are approached by a band of banditos claiming to be Mexican Federales. When Bogart's character asks to see their badges, a classic quote is born.
'Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges! I don't have to show you any stinkin' badges!' is the entire quote from the Bogart movie. 'Blazing Saddles' repeated a shortened version of this quote, and it shows up in some form or other in many movies, music, videos, etc.
2. From which movie is the following quote? "There are inmates and there are convicts. A convict has a certain code. And he knows to show a certain respect. An inmate, on the other hand, pulls the pin on his fellow man. Does the guard's work for them. Brings shame to the game. So, which are you gonna be?"

Answer: The Chronicles of Riddick

'The Chronicles of Riddick' was released in 2004 and is a continuation of 'Pitch Black', a sci-fi movie released in 2000. It stars Vin Diesel as Riddick. He has been captured and taken to a prison planet. One of the inmates asks Riddick if he knows the difference between inmates and convicts.

The quote stuck with me because it seemed interesting that even prisons (futuristic ones, at that) have a code by which they exist.
3. Which of the following is the correct quote from the action movie 'Top Gun'?

Answer: "I feel the need... the need for speed!"

Maverick (Tom Cruise) says to Goose (Anthony Edwards), "I feel the need," and they both say at the same time while high fiving "the need for speed". This happens while they are in their Navy flight suits, carrying their helmets with fighter jets behind them.

They are attending the Navy Fighter Weapons School and are getting ready to fly their jet. The look of this scene in 'Top Gun' (1986) is almost as famous as the quote. The quote "I feel the need... the need for speed" is used as an attention getter. Bloggers use it, anyone doing things that are fast or should be fast use it.

There is even an ad for a video named after the quote about people who drive the fastest cars in the world at five miles an hour - valets. How cute is that?
4. "My mommy always said there were no monsters - no real ones - but there are." From which movie is this line?

Answer: Aliens

In the first sequel to 'Alien' (1979), Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) finds a little girl, Newt (Carrie Henn), apparently the only survivor on planet LV-426. As Ripley is putting Newt to bed, the following conversation takes place. "My mommy always said there were no monsters - no real ones - but there are," says Newt. "Yes, there are, aren't there?" Ripley replies. "Why do they tell little kids that?" Newt asks. "Most of the time, it's true," Ripley replies. 'Aliens' was released in 1986, 'Alien 3' in 1992, and 'Alien Resurrection' in 1997.
5. What is the correct quote from the classic movie 'Gone With The Wind'?

Answer: "I don't know nothin' 'bout birthin' babies."

The complete quote is "Lordy, we got to have a doctor. I don't know nothin' 'bout birthin' babies'." This quote has been parodied many times.
Miss Scarlett (Vivien Leigh) enlists the help of the house servant, Prissy (Butterfly McQueen), to help deliver Melanie's (Olivia de Havilland) baby. McQueen had a very high pitched voice and played the role of an uneducated, southern, black servant in the 1939 movie 'Gone With The Wind'. She was not terribly proud of this role until much later in her life.
6. "When you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk." It's a classic, but from what movie?

Answer: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

In 1964, the first Clint Eastwood spaghetti western, 'A Fistful of Dollars', was released. In 1965, the second - 'For A Few Dollars More' - was released, and in 1966, the last was released - 'The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly'.
Eastwood is Blondie, The Good. Lee Van Cleef is Angel Eyes, The Bad, and Eli Wallach is Tuco, The Ugly. Around the time of the American Civil War, these three men come together to find a cemetery where they think a fortune in gold is buried. Tuco says the line "When you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk."
7. What is the correct quote from the 1942 musical, 'Yankee Doodle Dandy'?

Answer: "My mother thanks you, my father thanks you, my sister thanks you, and I thank you."

"Ladies and gentlemen, my mother thanks you, my father thanks you, my sister thanks you, and I thank you!" is a quote from George M. Cohan. In the days of vaudeville, this was one way he closed the show. This quote is listed as number 97 on AFI's list of 100 best movie quotes. James Cagney played George M. Cohan in the movie 'Yankee Doodle Dandy'. Cohan (Cagney) meets and talks with President Roosevelt (Jack Young), recalling his fourth of July birthday and his life. AFI (American Film Institute) has given several awards to this movie; 98th best picture, 97th best quote, 88th most inspiring, 71st best song ("Yankee Doodle Boy"), and 18th best musical.
8. And here's another classic, repeated many times. I'll even tell you that it's Lauren Bacall's lines. But from which movie? "You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together - and blow."

Answer: To Have and Have Not

"You know you don't have to act with me, Steve. You don't have to say anything, and you don't have to do anything. Not a thing. Oh, maybe just whistle. You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together - and blow." This is said by Marie Browning (Bacall) to Steve Morgan (Humphrey Bogart) in the 1944 film, 'To Have and Have Not'.
The movie takes place in Martinique during World War II. Bogart and a partner own a boat for hire but desperately need money. Bacall is a singer that backs the resistance movement. She and Bogart are romantically involved.
9. This quote has been around almost as long as movies have existed. What is the correct phrase from 'Dracula'?

Answer: "Listen to them. Children of the night. What music they make."

This quote is number 83 on AFI's list of 100 most memorable.
When Renfield (Dwight Frye) arrives at Dracula's (Bela Lugosi) castle, the Count says, "I am Dracula. I bid you welcome." He then hears wolves howling and says "Listen to them. Children of the night. What music they make." This should have been Renfield's first clue to get the heck out of there but that isn't the way the 1931 film was shot.
Another great quote from Dracula is, "I never drink... wine."
10. In which of the following movies will you hear this quote? "Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright."

Answer: The Wolfman

In 1941, an old gypsy woman named Maleva (Maria Ouspenskaya) says the line to Larry Talbot (Lon Chaney Jr.) and she sees a symbol in the palm of his hand. He has just killed her son Bela (Bela Lugosi), a werewolf, but not before being bitten. Other movies with werewolves have changed the quote to "when the moon is shining bright" or "when the moon is full and bright" and "wolfbane" gets changed to "wolfsbane" in some. Maleva has another memorable quote in the movie - "The way you walked was thorny, through no fault of your own, but as the rain enters the soil, the river enters the sea, so tears run to a predestined end. Your suffering is over, Bela my son. Now you will find peace."
