Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these film franchises did NOT switch to 3-D for the third film in its series?

Answer: Nightmare on Elm Street

The "Nightmare on Elm Street" franchise went to 3-D for the sixth film in the series ("Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare", 1991). "Jaws 3-D" (1983), "Friday the 13th Part III" (1982), and "Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over" (2003) were all released in 3-D after the first two movies in the series were in 2-D.

In "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" (1987), dream killer Freddie Krueger attacks the last surviving children of the vigilantes that killed him while they are patients at a psychiatric hospital.

"Amityville 3-D" (1983) was originally going to be an incorrect answer for this question instead of "Spy Kids", but for legal reasons it is technically not part of that series.

2. What was the first 3-D feature film released in the US?

Answer: Power of Love

The "Power of Love" was a 5-reel melodrama directed by Nat Deverich, and starred Terry O'Neil and Barbara Bedford. It premiered in Los Angeles, at the Ambassador Hotel Theater, on September 27, 1922. The movie is about a woman who is promised to marry a villain, but she is in love with someone else. A masked ball helps to sort things out.

"Bwana Devil", which is usually touted as the first 3-D release wasn't released until November 30, 1952.

3. Which horror film, frequently said to be filmed in 3-D, was actually filmed in "Illusion-O"? Viewers still were required to wear specially tinted glasses for the full viewing experience?

Answer: 13 Ghosts

Viewers had a choice of red lenses (which intensified the image of the ghosts) or blue lenses (which dulled the image). In truth, the "ghosts" were visible without the use of glasses, as many late-night movie fans will attest. The movie is about a family that inherits a haunted house, but they must find the 13th ghost to free the other trapped spirits.

The original 1960 movie was remade in 2001 which starred Tony Shaloub, Shannon Elizabeth, and F. Murray Abraham.

4. Which actor originally shaved his head for the 3-D film "Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn", a move which lead to playing dim-witted bailiff Nostradamus "Bull" Shannon on "Night Court"?

Answer: Richard Moll

Actor Richard Moll played bailiff Nostradamus "Bull" Shannon on "Night Court" (1984-1992). Moll kept his head shaved for the role at the request of the television show producers.

"Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn" (1983) was a space western that combines science and sorcery. It involves a space ranger who is in search of the criminal Jared-Syn. Moll played Hurok, the nomad leader.

5. What 2010 Oscar-nominated stop-motion animated movie, from the director of "The Nightmare Before Christmas", was filmed in 3-D?

Answer: Coraline

"Coraline" was written and directed by Henry Selick (who directed "The Nightmare Before Christmas", 1993), and based on the book by Neil Gaiman. It tells the story of a girl who finds a doorway to another world and what she finds there.

The film uses 3-D to help draw a distinction between the "real" world and the "other" world, with different depths of vision used on the different types of sets.

6. This 3-D movie was nominated for the 2010 Academy Award for Best Picture. The film uses a mixture of live action and motion captured performances to tell the story of a paraplegic soldier given an artificial body to explore a dangerous alien world. Here he falls in love and leads the natives in a fight against their human colonist oppressors. What movie is it?

Answer: Avatar

According to interviews, "Avatar" (2009) was the movie writer/director James Cameron wanted to make following "Titanic" (1997). Cameron waited over a decade for technology to improve so his vision could be realized.

Some of that technology involved a virtual camera system that displayed "augmented reality", enabling the director to see the computer graphic images in real time.

7. What 3-D movie was the first animated film to open the Cannes Film Festival?

Answer: Up

"Up" (2009) also won the 2010 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film. It tells the story of an elderly man fulfilling a promise to his late wife by going on the adventure they had always talked about. With the help of a little boy, he faces dangers and talking dogs and learns that life itself is an adventure.

The mantelpiece picture of the house was done in the style of Mary Blair, an early Disney artist who designed the "It's a Small World" theme park attraction.

8. Early 3-D films used anaglyph images and glasses - the red/cyan glasses most people associate with 3-D images. These glasses use either a red or cyan filter over each eye to send different images to the brain. Is the red filter of anaglyph glasses over the left eye or the right?

Answer: left

Though many people think of anaglyph glasses for 3-D films, only the earliest 3-D films used this techniques. Polarized images and glasses were in use by the 1950s. Anaglyph glasses are much more common for printed images, where polarized images would not work, or for home viewing on standard televisions.

Simple paper anaglyph glasses cannot compensate for the small wavelength shift between the two lenses (~250nm), making the red image slightly blurry. Plastic molded glasses can correct for this, with a small (+1/2) diopter increase on the red lens.

Magenta/green glasses have also been used in addition to the red/cyan glasses discussed in this question.

9. RealD technology uses a single camera that has a circularly polarizing LCD filter lens. What 2005 film was the first released in RealD 3-D?

Answer: Chicken Little

"Chicken Little" (2005) is based on the fable also known as "The Sky is Falling", with aliens added. When the town ignores Chicken Little's warnings about an alien attack, it's up to him and his friends to save the day. Most characters are named for other fables or sayings, such as Ugly Duckling, Fish Out of Water, and Runt of the Litter. "Chicken Little" was Disney's first in-house, fully computer animated film.

RealD is one of the easiest 3-D technology to install, only needing a projector upgrade, and has become a popular format for 3D films.

10. In a 2008 3-D movie, the characters find out that the events of a novel by Jules Verne were true, making it a sequel, of sorts, to the book. What novel was the basis of the film?

Answer: Journey to the Center of the Earth

Many aspects of the "science" of the 1864 novel has been proven wrong and as a result the book has not aged as well as some of Verne's other work.

In the 2008 3-D film, a scientist, his nephew, and their guide retrace the steps of the book to get to the lost land underneath the earth, and more importantly, to try to get out again.

A "4-D" version of the film is also available in some areas as a theme park attraction, such as in Stone Mountain Park in Atlanta, Georgia. It drastically shortens the movie, consists primarily of the 3D scenes, and adds other effects such as fog, water, and movement.
