Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the first name of Mrs. Muir's deceased husband?

Answer: Edwin

At the beginning of the movie, Mrs. Muir (Gene Tierney)was the recent widow of Edwin Muir. She was living with her husband's mother and sister, but being a very independent woman, wanted to get her own residence and decided to rent a seaside cottage. She moved into Gull Cottage with her daughter, Anna, and Martha her maid.

This was also the basis of an American TV sit-com series in the late 1960s which starred Hope Lange and Edward Mulhare, although in the TV show, Mrs. Muir had two children.
2. Mrs. Muir had a tree on the property cut down because it spoiled her view of the ocean. What kind of tree was it?

Answer: monkey puzzle

Of course the Captain was furious at first since he had brought back the tree as a seedling from one of his voyages and planted it himself. However, he eventually forgave Mrs. Muir for this minor indiscretion during their growing friendship.
3. What was the Captain's wish that his home would have become after his death?

Answer: a home for retired seaman

The rugged and earthy sea captain was portrayed excellently by Rex Harrison; known more for playing erudite and sophisticated characters in movies. The character of Captain Gregg had wanted his home to be made into a retired seamen's home, but died without having a will, so the cottage was left vacant, unable to be rented because it was haunted - that is until Mrs. Muir arrived.
4. From what source did Mrs. Muir derive her income early in the movie?

Answer: a gold mine

Mrs. Muir lived comfortably on her income derived from a South African gold mine. Apparently it paid enough for her to afford the £50 a month rent on the cottage, paying her maid's wages, and other expenses. However, it eventually stopped producing which made for temporarily hard times for the Muirs.
5. What was the title of the novel that Captain Gregg "ghost" wrote with Mrs. Muir's assistance?

Answer: Blood and Swash

Or "The Unadulterated Life of a Sea Captain" as it was promoted. This was the Captain's idea on how Mrs. Muir could make money when her original source of income dried up. Mrs. Muir and the Captain had a few tiffs about how to word certain events, since Mrs. Muir did not approve of some of the language used by the Captain, but when published, it became in instant bestseller enabling Mrs. Muir to purchase Gull Cottage outright.
6. When Mrs. Muir went to the publisher with the manuscript of the novel, she met a suave man in the office who became a romantic interest. Who portrayed this smarmy character?

Answer: George Sanders

Sanders played the philandering Miles Fairley, who was an author of children's literature under the pen name of "Uncle Neddy", with unctuous abandon. It seemed all the other characters at Gull Cottage, especially the Captain, hated him and saw through his thin veneer except Mrs. Muir.

It wasn't until she went to his London home and discovered he had a wife, two children, and had been in this type of situation before, that she exposed his true nature. Needless to say, he didn't appeared in the movie again after this.
7. How did the Captain die?

Answer: accidental suffocation

The rumor in town was that the Captain had committed suicide. He quickly informed Mrs. Muir of the true circumstances. The gas light in his bedroom went out while he was sleeping and the fumes suffocated him.
8. What well-known actress played Mrs. Muir's daughter, Anna, as a child?

Answer: Natalie Wood

An accomplished actress as both a child and adult, Natalie Wood was nominated three times for an Academy Award for "Rebel Without a Cause (1955), "Splendor in the Grass" (1961), and "Love with the Proper Stranger" (1963). Ironically, regarding the setting of this movie at the ocean-side, she died of drowning after falling off a yacht.
9. What was the name of the village where Gull Cottage was located?

Answer: Whitecliff

A close-up of Mrs. Muir's luggage as it was being transported indicated that it was going to Whitecliff-by-the-Sea.
10. Did Mrs. Muir die in the movie?

Answer: yes

At the end she did pass away. However, the Captain was right there to take her hand and lead her into what one can assume was a blissful afterlife together symbolized by them walking out an open door into a glorious sunset.
