The night before the experiment the crew of the USS Eldridge are enjoying themselves at a dance on base and Pam is there to see them off. When they take a break from dancing, she asks David about his dad, if he's heard from him. He replies "No, he's up in Sacramento; he's not gonna let the war get in the way of his racing".

2. After David and Jimmy wind up in the desert, after the experiment, and walk to the roadside diner, what kind of gas is the establishment shown to sell?

Answer: Chevron

The roadside diner is the first real sign of civilization they see after arriving in 1984, and the Chevron logo is visible on both a sign atop a pole and on the gas pumps themselves.

When the truck hauling the horse trailer with them approaches a road block, due to the storm caused by the vortex, the driver momentarily gets out, whereupon David and Allison unhitch the trailer and steal the pickup truck.

When they walk into the house and come upon the model of the house, they know they're one step closer in finding Dr. Longstreet.

After finding Dr. Longstreet, David learns that he was the one who shut down the generators, but has to be transported to the vortex opening to get back onboard the USS Eldridge. He's outfitted with what appears to be a pressurized suit (akin to what an astronaut would wear) with a helmet and gloves.

The very force of the vortex' suction is enough to pull David up and into it, after being driven underneath it in an APC (armored personnel carrier). After reappearing on the ship and shutting down the generators, he takes off the helmet, putting the gloves inside and then tosses that to the ground before walking over to Jimmy, who he sees again as a young man.

He tells him he can't stay and again jumps overboard, back to 1984.
