Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Well, this is a well-worn garment. It was also a trademark of someone who could kill people in their dreams. Besides his clothing, he was known for an unusual glove. Who was this character created by Wes Craven?

Answer: Freddy Krueger

Robert Englund first appeared as Freddy Krueger in "A Nightmare on Elm Street" in 1984. A child killer who was burned to death by angry parents, his spirit entered people's dreams and killed them there and in real life. He fashioned a leather glove with long metal claws for his right hand. The "Nightmare" franchise continues on; Englund was in the first nine.
2. Louise Fletcher won an Academy Award for portraying this tyrannical person in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". What was the name of her character?

Answer: Mildred Ratched

Five actors turned down the role before Louise Fletcher accepted it. The 1975 movie was based on Ken Kesey's 1962 novel. As the head nurse of a mental hospital she was more a prison warden than a caregiver. Her superiors let her get away with it because she kept the patients in line. But, upon the arrival of Randle McMurphy (Jack Nicholson), things began to change.
3. "I'm not going to be ignored, Dan." And she wasn't, by attempting suicide, splashing acid on his car and killing his daughter's pet. Who was this way-off-base character?

Answer: Alex Forrest

Glenn Close starred as Alex and Michael Douglas was Dan Gallagher in "Fatal Attraction" from 1987. He was a lawyer whose work led him to meet Alexandra Forrest, a publishing company editor. At the end of a weekend affair she slit her wrists when he wanted to leave.

After he patched her up he tried to keep her away but she kept calling him and showing up where he was, including his apartment. Gallagher tried to get a restraining order against her. The movie follows her increasingly deranged behavior, including getting into his apartment and boiling his daughter's rabbit in a kettle of water. Close was nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award for her performance.
4. A man with a razor-sharp hat, a woman who dies of "skin suffocation" and a plot to set off an atomic bomb. All in a day's work for Agent 007. Who was the villain in the third "James Bond" movie?

Answer: Auric Goldfinger

Assigned by MI6 to determine if gold bullion dealer Auric Goldfinger was smuggling gold internationally, Bond discovered a plot to set off a nuclear bomb in the gold vault at Fort Knox, Kentucky, poisoning the U.S. gold supply and giving the Chinese an advantage in world economic markets. Goldfinger was not only obsessed with gold but psychopathic as well, willing to kill anyone who got in his way. 1964's "Goldfinger" was the first "Bond" film to win an Academy Award and began the use of technological gadgets the films became famous for.
5. Do you hear some creepy background music? We never found out this character's name; he didn't speak a language any of us understand. But he certainly made his intentions known! What kind of shark was depicted in "Jaws"?

Answer: Great White

Called the original Summer blockbuster, "Jaws" caused many people to just look at the ocean instead of going for a swim in 1975. Based on Peter Benchley's book, director Steven Spielberg directed the film, mostly shot on Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts about a man-eating shark and efforts to stop it. (Tour guides on the island still point out some of the filming locations.) The shark in the movie began attacking swimmers for no apparent reason, other than that a great white is "a mindless, eating machine". It then attacked boats including one which the local police chief and others were using to find and kill it.

The main mechanical shark in the movie was nicknamed Bruce, after Spielberg's lawyer (insert your own joke here, folks). The name was also used for the great white shark in the animated movie "Finding Nemo" (2003).
6. Bela Lugosi's Hungarian accent was a boon and a curse to his acting career. For which character is he best known?

Answer: Dracula

Lugosi starred as a vampire in the 1931 film "Dracula", which was loosely based on Bram Stoker's novel of the same name. It made him a star who will always be identified with the role, even to the accent used by Count von Count on "Sesame Street". A man traveled to Count Dracula's castle on business, only to be attacked by the Count, who was a vampire, with the ability to turn into a bat. Dracula got the man to arrange a boat trip for a coffin (with Dracula in it) to England, where the count continued his evil ways.

Lugosi's accent fit with the part of someone from Eastern Europe but it worked against him when he tried to get other roles. He developed sciatic neuritis and became dependent on morphine and methadone, which caused Hollywood studios to shy away from him. He finished his career playing roles in low-budget movies.
7. "You talkin' to me?" "You talkin' to ME?" A depressed, socially inept ex-Marine decides to become a vigilante. The movie "Taxi Driver" follows him on his ride to violence. What was the name of the main character in the movie?

Answer: Travis Bickle

Robert De Niro, as Bickle, is listed as the protagonist in the movie (1976) but he might also be regarded as the antagonist. Bickle was a lonely Vietnam war veteran who took a job as a late-shift taxi driver in New York City because of his insomnia. As he observed what went on in the city he decided to single-handedly clean up the sleazy aspects of it.

De Niro won an Oscar nomination for Best Actor; Jodie Foster, who played a 12-year old prostitute, won a nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
8. A real psychological film, this movie featured a twisted plot line and a twisted character. Which part did Anthony Perkins play in one of Alfred Hitchcock's films?

Answer: Norman Bates

In the movie "Psycho" (1960), Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) on the run after stealing $40,000 that belonged to her employer, ended up at the secluded Bates Motel. She met a man named Norman, who said he ran the motel with his mentally disturbed mother. As the woman took a shower we see a woman's silhouette raise a knife and stab her to death. When Crane's sister hired a private detective to find her, he eventually went to the motel and Norman's story started to unravel.

"Psycho", because of the shower stabbing scene is considered the first "slasher" movie. Perkins played the role of Norman Bates to the fullest.
9. "The Silence of the Lambs" was a 1991 movie made from a novel and its sequel. Which creepy character did Anthony Hopkins play in the film?

Answer: Hannibal Lecter

The books and movie concerned a psychiatrist who became a cannibalistic serial killer and was imprisoned in a hospital for the criminally insane. Jodie Foster played Clarice Starling, an FBI agent-in-training assigned to try to get information from Lecter about another serial killer. Lecter agreed to help her but after awhile began playing mind-games with her, asking for personal information.

In the end, the FBI got the information it wanted but Lecter escaped from the hospital. He phoned Starling to tell her he was "having an old friend for dinner".
10. Stephen King wrote some of the scarier books of the 20th century, many of which have been made into movies. In 1980 "The Shining" was made into a movie about a caretaker at an isolated hotel. What was the main character's name?

Answer: Jack Torrance

Jack Nicholson played Torrance, a writer hired to be watchman at a hotel which closed each winter. The hotel was located on an old Native American burial ground. Torrance and his family moved in, they became snowed in and, wouldn't you know it, Torrance started to behave strangely.
