Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. All About Eve's greatest hit was also the cause of their biggest embarrassment. When they made their only appearance on BBC's "Top of the Pops" they sat through the first two minutes of this song, completely unaware that they were on air. What was the song?

Answer: Martha's Harbour

At the time, "Top of the Pops" went out live but used recorded music. Artists would either mime or sing live to the pre-recorded backing. Unfortunately for the band, when they went on air, nobody had switched on the studio monitors which would play the backing for them. With nothing to tell them to mime along, they sat oblivious to the nation's cringing.
2. What single off their first album contains the following lyrics? "Reach for the stars 'cause their sweeter by far Than the moon, 'though she's brighter and closer to you."

Answer: What Kind of Fool?

Although the band met with success in the Indie charts, they didn't fare so well in the national charts. "What Kind of Fool?" was the band's second highest chart hit ("Martha's Harbour" reached No. 10), only making it as high as No. 29.
3. The band managed to gain their limited success primarily through the backing of Wayne Hussey. In addition to giving them a great deal of support, Wayne Hussey sang backing vocals on some songs, but what goth band did he normally front?

Answer: The Mission

The Cure's front-man is Robert Smith.
Andrew Eldritch was the lead singer for The Sisters of Mercy.
The singer in The Fields of the Nephilim was Carl McCoy.

Whilst the association with The Mission gained All About Eve an undeserved "hippy goth" moniker, it's doubtful whether they would have achieved any level of success without it.
4. From which area of the United Kingdom did the majority of All About Eve's original line-up originate?

Answer: England

Julianne Regan was born in Coventry in the midlands. Tim Bricheno and Andy Cousin were both born in the north of England. Andy Cousins is a Londoner.
5. What colour provided a single for All About Eve and formed part of the title of their second album?

Answer: Scarlet

"Scarlet" was the third single off the album "Scarlet and Other Stories", following "Road to your Soul" and "December".

Scarlet leaned more heavily on the band's folk influences than their first album. Several tracks on the album featured Rik Sanders, of Fairport Convention, on violin. All About Eve have appeared several times since at Fairport's Cropredy Festival.
6. Guitarist Tim Bricheno left the band after their second album to join arch-goths the Sisters of Mercy. His replacement, Marty Wilson-Piper brought a new songs to the band for their third album "Touched by Jesus". From which band was he "on loan"?

Answer: The Church

Marty-Wilson Piper was lead guitarist for Australia indie guitar group The Church. His guitar intro for Strange Way is instantly recognisable.
7. Which single off "Touched by Jesus" contains the lines: And the seventh dream was, so surreal When the dreamer broke the seventh seal And butterflies all lost their wheels It comes as no surprise...

Answer: The Dreamer

Who knew that butterflies had wheels? Well, she did say it was surreal and I suppose we can assume she was making an oblique reference Alexander Pope's question: "Who breaks a butterfly on a wheel?"

Maybe...
8. Which of these tracks from All About Eve's fourth album, Ultraviolet, was released as a single?

Answer: Some Finer Day

"Infrared" and "Blindfolded Visionary" were not released as singles.

"Dive in" was a bonus track on the "Some Finer Day" CD single, along with the 7" B-side, "Moodswing".

All these tracks saw a departure from the vocal-lead sound of earlier work. They represented a far more modern and adventurous sound which didn't go down particularly well with some of the more conservative fans who even managed to complain that Julianne had cut her hair.
9. Which of these is the title of the "Hits and Rarities" album released by Mercury on 26th October 1992 (the same day as Ultraviolet) following the band's switch to MCA?

Answer: Winter Words

"Our Summer" was an early release and a favourite of many. It was seen as a breakthrough release in the band's history and rightly takes its place as the first track on the album.

"Give me the Autumn" is a line from "Share it with me" off "Touched by Jesus".

"Brace the Spring" and "Winter Words" are both taken from "Wild Flowers", which was the B-side to "Every Angel".
10. What was the name of the band formed by Julianne Regan following the break-up of All About Eve?

Answer: Mice

Julianne formed Mice with Tim McTighe. Sadly, their record company, the ironically named "Permanent", went bankrupt in 1995, shortly after the release of their album "Because I Can".

All About Eve's drummer, Mark Price, went on to perform with The Cure and Right Said Fred before joining Del Amitri.

Whilst writing this quiz, I found that All About Eve released one last single, "Let me go home", back in 2004. It reached number 52 in the charts but, sadly, passed me by.

Bassist, Andy Cousin, joined The Mission and played on their Neverland album in 1995.

Marty Wilson-Piper, only ever really loaned to the band, returned to his work with Australia's The Church.
