Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What relationship do Patience and Prudence have to one another?

Answer: sisters

The sisters are the Los Angeles born daughters of songwriter Mark McIntye and his wife Audrey. Mark had strong connections in the music recording business. One of his friends was Ross Bagdasarian, also known as David Seville, of Chipmunks fame. It was through Seville that Patience and Prudence got their first big break. The favor would be returned to Seville a few years later.
2. Mark McKintyre heard Patience and Prudence singing a song they sang at camp which they thought was called "They Say". Mark McIntyre recognized the song and shortly thereafter,it was recorded as "Tonight You Belong To Me". In which era was the song actually first written and recorded?

Answer: 1920s

"Tonight You Belong To Me" was a number one hit for Gene Austin in 1927. It has since become associated strongly with Patience and Prudence and has been recorded by Kay Starr, Dottie West, and The Chipmunks, to name but a few. Patience and Prudence were only 11 and 14 when they recorded the song in 1956.
The 2004 collection of the girls' songs includes a Beatles-era version by the girls themselves that is actually quite good.
3. The runaway success of "Tonight You Belong To Me" took producers by surprise. So, the scramble was on to record a follow-up hit. Which they did. The next success was "Gonna Get Along Without Ya Now". It had been a minor hit in 1952 for Teresa Brewer. Who did NOT subsequently record "Gonna Get Along Without Ya Now"?

Answer: The Paris Sisters

The Paris Sisters did not record the song, although they had a similar gentle sound. The other artists recorded less successful, but catchy, renditions of the song.
4. Patience and Prudence once played Las Vegas.

Answer: True

The girls appeared as part of Ken Murray's show in Las Vegas in the summer of 1957. Their part on stage was 12 minutes in length.
5. Patience and Prudence recorded their version of the theme to a movie in the fifties.

Answer: True

The movie was the 1958 film "Tom Thumb" starring Russ Tamblyn. The lyrics were pretty much "Too-Doo-Dee-Dum-Dum" and "La-de-da-da-dum". Interestingly, composition credits go to Dave Barbour with lyrics by his wife at the time, Peggy Lee. Somehow, it seems Peggy was running out of ideas.
6. Patience and Prudence were largely protected from the limelight, but they were given the choice of appearing on one national TV show. Which of the following star's TV show did they choose to appear on?

Answer: Perry Como

The motivation for putting the girls on a national TV show was to dispel a rumor that the youngsters were really adults. Their only TV appearance was with Perry Como. Dick Clark and Ed Sullivan extended offers, Jackie Gleason did not.
7. Prudence inadvertently contributed even more success to their label when Ross Bagdasarian was visiting the McIntyre household one day. Prudence was playing her 78 RPM record of "Bozo and the Hummingbirds" which featured high-pitched "voices" for the birds. Ross(also known as David Seville) was inspired by the gimmick. What was his resulting hit in 1958?

Answer: The Witch Doctor

"Oo-ee-oo-ah-ah, ting-tang, walla, walla, bang bang" was the infectious refrain for "The Witch Doctor" which went to number one in the U.S. and number seven in the U.K. "The Purple People Eater" (1958) was by Sheb Wooley, "Uh-Oh Part 2" (1959) was a Chipmunk-sounding ditty by The Nutty Squirrels, and "Alvin's Harmonica" (1959) was a follow-up hit for Seville and The Chipmunks.
8. Two songs by Patience and Prudence showed up in movies decades after they were recorded. The songs were "Gonna Get Along Without Ya Now" and "A Smile and A Ribbon". Respectively, in which two movies did these songs appear?

Answer: Election/Ghost World

"Gonna Get Along Without Ya Now" appeared in "Election" (1999). Startlingly, in "Ghost World" (2001) when Enid (Thora Birch) plays a 45 RPM record in her bedroom, it turns out to be "A Smile and A Ribbon". The song is the flip side of "Tonight You Belong To Me" and is a solo by Prudence. The director of the film, Terry Zwigoff, has a strong affection for old and obscure recordings.
9. All of the Patience and Prudence recordings, except for three sixties releases, were on the Liberty label. What was the label that released the three 1960's singles? Hint: The label's biggest act had been The Murmaids.

Answer: Chattahoochie

The Chattahoochie singles did not sell well and are forgotten obscurities. A young guitar player, Glen Campbell, was hired to play backing guitar at the sessions.
10. In 1959, Patience and Prudence teamed up with Mike Clifford for two singles, neither of which made a big splash. Mike did have a hit in 1962, though, with a beautiful song. What was the name of the song?

Answer: Close to Cathy

"Close to Cathy" was Mike Clifford's only top 40 hit, going to number 12 in 1962. The CD, "The Best of Patience and Prudence" includes all Patience and Prudence songs mentioned in this quiz -- and many more. Kudos goes to Brian Gari of Collector's Choice for packaging this compilation. Thus ends the saga of Patience and Prudence who saved Liberty Records with their first two hits.

The girls were undoubtedly more talented than they ever realized. They now lead ordinary lives and as for show business, according to Mr. Gari, "...they don't miss it one bit".

In any event, thank you Patience and Prudence for the delightful and precious tunes.
