Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Identify the Greek who is the father of all unfortunate fortune or fame seekers, the madman who set a temple on fire allegedly to secure himself a place in history:

Answer: Herostratos

In 356 BC Herostratos, sometimes referred to as a terrorist these days, burnt down the temple of Artemis in Ephesos. What he achieved is known as herostratical fame.
2. Edith Cresson was prime minister in France for 10 months early in the 1990s. One of the reasons she had to resign so soon, was:

Answer: She said that one out of four British men were homosexuals

No natural-born diplomat, Cresson also said that the Japanese owed their economic success to their ant-like qualities.
3. Former US Vice President Dan Quayle once said, after a trip to Latin America, that he regretted not having studied Latin harder in school so that he might have conversed with people.

Answer: False

This is probably the most famous Quayle saying, but it is nonetheless false. It was told as a joke by a fellow Republican in front of the press, which nastily brought it on as a fact.
4. Norwegian soccer goalkeeper Bjarte Flem once made a mistake that immediately became a hit in TV cavalcades of misfortunes in sports. What did he do?

Answer: He threw the ball into his own goal

The ball somehow stuck to his gloves and he somehow continued his torso's rotation too far... A more silly own goal is pretty hard to conceive, but it is of course better remembered then any save of his.
5. An American game show host brought some trouble on himself after cracking a joke about Jews in Michael Moore's documentary movie "Roger & Me". What was his name?

Answer: Bob Eubanks

"The Newlywed Game" was Eubanks' game show. He comes from Flint, Michigan, as does Moore (the movie dealt with General Motors closing down their plant in Flint).
6. British philosopher, essayist and statesman Francis Bacon (1561-1626) died from bronchitis that he attracted while burying a hen in snow to see whether this might slow down the decay of the meat.

Answer: True

Bacon's main contribution to philosophy was an insistence that all modern science should be based on thorough investigation (inductive method) rather than incomplete theory. One might say this method cost him his life.
7. What European statesman said this in 1995: "The German system was formed over centuries. Under Hitler this formation reached its climax. This is what corresponds to our understanding of a presidential republic and the role of a president in it."

Answer: President of Belarus Alexandr Lukashenko

The words fell in an interview with the German "Handelsblatt", which was so shocked it chose not to print it. The tape with the interview was broadcast twice by Belarusian Radio, however. Lukashenka has received harsh criticism for his economic politics and the numerous violations of democratic and human rights under his regime.
8. A peace mediator working for the UN in the Balkans during the war-ridden 1990's shocked many when he said (of Serbs, Croatians and Bosnians) that "they're all Serbs". Who was he?

Answer: Thorvald Stoltenberg

Former Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs who even then was known nationally for oral recklessness. After he in 1993 replaced Cyrus Vance as the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in former Yugoslavia, Stoltenberg worked closely with Lord Owen, EU Special Representative to the Former Yugoslavia. Owen was in his turn replaced by former Swedish PM Carl Bildt in 1995.
9. Few sport stars can match the popularity of England soccer player David Beckham. In a tv-interview with him and his wife - pop star Victoria "Posh Spice" - Beckham once admitted something that astounded a few of his fans. What did he say?

Answer: That he is stupid

Hopefully, honesty counts more than smartness. Anyway, how stupid can you be with a salary like his..
10. Well on his way to a comfortable victory over Riddick Bowe - who was generally considered the best heavyweight boxer of the time - this boxer could not keep himself from hitting low and was disqualified with 30 seconds left of the 1996 clash. When they met a second time, the story basically repeated itself. What was this self-defeating boxer's name?

Answer: Andrew Golota

Golota, of Polen, had shown a few signs of his tendency to crack under pressure before, but nobody could have foreseen his behaviour against Bowe. Later, Golota would several times suffer breakdowns during fights, notably against Mike Tyson when he simply left the ring and stormed out of the building after the 2nd round.
