Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does an "apiologist" study?

Answer: Bees

From the Latin, apis - bee. Mostly used for the scientific study of the honey bee. Sometimes the variant spelling "apidologist" is used.
It would be a sad world without bees to spread pollen and make the honey on our toast at breakfast!
2. This person is a "petrologist". What does he/she study?

Answer: Rocks

From the Greek, petra - rock. Petrology deals with all aspects of rocks, a sub division dealing with the macroscopic study is called 'lithology'. And I naively thought a rock is a rock is a rock!
3. Let's look at a "trichologist". What is this person's specialism?

Answer: Hair

Trichology is the study of the health of the hair and scalp. This area of study has also been useful in forensic studies, using the health, body, mass, ethnicity and so on of the hair to aid in identifying suspects in criminal trials.

A trichologist can help you with all your hair problems, including receding hairline, hair transplants, wigs and general hair health!
4. Our next expert is a "phytologist". What would he or she show us?

Answer: Plants

Phytology is a synonym for Botany, the study of plants.
This is a vast area of study. If we look around us plants from the tiny flowering weed to the tallest shrub, what beauty we find!
5. An "eschatologist" sounds a most serious person. What is he concerned with?

Answer: Death, judgement and afterlife

From the Greek 'eschtos' meaning 'last'. Broadly speaking this is the part of theology and philosophy dealing with the 'hereafter'. This study will obviously have vastly different outcomes for different beliefs and viewpoints. A truly divergent study.
6. What could a "urologist" help us with?

Answer: Urinary system

The urinary system is made up of the kidneys, the ureters and the bladder.
Urologists are also concerned with the male (not female) reproductive system and are hospital health practitioners.
7. What does a "vermeologist" study?

Answer: Worms

Worm is the common name for a group of creatures with long, soft bodies and no legs. There are about 2,700 species of earthworms and hundreds of thousands other worm species. These include annelids, insects (in the larva stage) as well as flat worms. From Latin 'vermes' worms.
8. What is an "anemologist" concerned with?

Answer: The science of the wind

He studies the movement of wind. The velocity of airflow can be measured with an anemometer. From the Greek 'anemos' - wind.
9. What would a "conchologist" be interested in?

Answer: Shells

In Europe conchology is sometimes called 'malacology', which is the study of mollusks in general, not just the shells. In the narrower sense it is the study of the exoskeletons of mollusks, not only marine but also including the shells of land and freshwater mollusks.

On the South African east coast sea shells are fairly plentiful and a delight to collect.
10. What does a "nephologist" specialize in?

Answer: Study of clouds

Nephology (from the Greek word'nephos' meaning 'cloud') is the study of clouds and cloud formations.

Interest in nephology has come to the fore again in relation to the part clouds might play in global warming.
