Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The No. 81. According to the introduction line in the NKJV and NIV Bibles, Psalm 81 was written by Asaph. Who exactly was Asaph?

Answer: A music leader appointed by David

Asaph, the writer of Psalm 81, was a music leader appointed by David, according to notes in the NKJV Study Bible. Asaph is credited with writing twelve of the one-hundred and fifty Psalms that appear in the Old Testament. The Psalms are numbered 50 and 73 through to 83. According to Wikipedia, a specific time period is not known to be associated with these Psalms of Asaph.

Here's how Psalm 81 reads in the NKJV:

"Sing aloud to God our strength;
Make a joyful shout to the God of Jacob.
Raise a song and strike the timbrel,
The pleasant harp with the lute.
Blow the trumpet at the time of the New Moon,
At the full moon, on our solemn feast day.
For this is a statute for Israel,
A law of the God of Jacob.
This He established in Joseph as a testimony,
When He went throughout the land of Egypt,
Where I heard a language I did not understand.
'I removed his shoulder from the burden;
His hands were freed from the baskets.
You called in trouble, and I delivered you;
I answered you in the secret place of thunder;
I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah
Hear, O My people, and I will admonish you!
O Israel, if you will listen to Me!
There shall be no foreign god among you;
Nor shall you worship any foreign god.
I am the Lord your God,
Who brought you out of the land of Egypt;
Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.
But My people would not heed My voice,
And Israel would have none of Me.
So I gave them over to their own stubborn heart,
To walk in their own counsels.
Oh, that My people would listen to Me,
That Israel would walk in My ways!
I would soon subdue their enemies,
And turn My hand against their adversaries.
The haters of the LORD would pretend submission to Him,
But their fate would endure forever.
He would have fed them also with the finest of wheat;
And with honey from the rock I would have satisfied you'."
2. The No. 82. Starting at Genesis 1, what is the eighty-second verse in the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament?

Answer: Genesis 4:2

The eighty-second verse in the Hebrew Bible and in the Old Testament is Genesis 4:1. Genesis 1 has thirty-one verses while Genesis 2 has twenty-five verses and Genesis 3 twenty-four for a total of eighty verses. Add on two more verses -- taking you to Genesis 4:2 -- and you have eighty-two verses.

Genesis 4:2 tells of Eve giving birth to Abel, who was a keeper of sheep while his brother Cain was a tiller of the ground. It's in the fourth chapter of Genesis that details are given about Cain killing Abel. In the same chapter, details are given about the Bible's second murder. According to Genesis 4:19-24, Lamech killed an unnamed man.
3. The No. 83. According to Exodus 7:7, when Moses approached the Pharaoh seeking permission for the Israelites to leave Egypt, he was accompanied by his eighty-three year old brother. Who was his brother?

Answer: Aaron

Aaron is the correct answer. According to Exodus 7:7, Moses was eighty years old and Aaron was eighty-three when they first appeared before the Pharaoh to obtain permission for the Israelites to leave Egypt and go to what Scripture refers to as the Promised Land. Only after God unleashed ten punishing plagues on Egypt did the Pharaoh grant permission for Moses and Aaron to lead their people out of Egypt. Moses and Aaron were assisted by their sister Miriam.
4. The No. 84. Luke 2:37 tells about a widow "of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day." What was the name of the woman?

Answer: Anna

The correct answer is Anna. According to Luke 2:36-38, after Jesus was presented as an infant at the temple by his parents Mary and Joseph, Anna "gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem." According to Luke 2:36, she was the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. Verses 36-38, in the NKJV, state: "...she was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; and this woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day."
5. The No. 85. 1 Samuel 22:18 tells of a man from Edom killing eighty-five priests, or "men who wore a linen ephod." Who was the mass murderer?

Answer: Doeg

Doeg, who was following orders of King Saul, killed eighty-five priests, according to Scripture. It all happened at a time in Saul's life when he was transfixed with the goal of killing David, even though David didn't want harm to come to Saul. 1 Samuel 22:17 states Saul wanted the priests killed because they were allies of David. The same verse states Saul ordered his guards to kill the priests but no one "would lift their hands to strike the priests of the LORD." So Saul turned to Doeg, an Edomite, to get action.

1 Samuel 22:18, in the NKJV, states: "And the king said to Doeg, 'You turn and kill the priests!' So Doeg the Edomite turned and struck the priests, and killed on that day eighty-five men who wore a linen ephod."
6. The No. 86. According to Genesis 16:16, what man was eighty-six years old when he became the father of Ishmael?

Answer: Abraham

Abraham, who was known as Abram at the time, is the correct answer. According to Genesis 16:16 he was eighty-six years old when his son Ishmael was born. The boy's mother was Hagar, the handmaiden of Abraham's wife Sarah. Scripture states Sarah. who was known as Sarai at the time, gave permission to Abraham to sleep with Hagar to produce a child because she was barren. Sarah would later give birth to Isaac.
7. The No. 87. Starting at Matthew 1, what is the eighty-seventh verse in the New Testament?

Answer: Matthew 4:22

Matthew 1 has twenty-five verses while Matthew 2 has twenty-three verses and Matthew 3 seventeen for a total of sixty-five verses. Add on twenty-two more verses -- taking you to Matthew 4:22 -- and you reach the eighty-seventh verse of the New Testament.

Matthew 4:22 tells of James and John, the sons of Zebedee, deciding to follow Jesus. The verse in the KJV, NKJV and NIV states they "immediately" left behind their fishing boat and their father to follow Christ.
8. The No. 88. Starting at Genesis 1, what is the eighty-eighth chapter in the Old Testament?

Answer: Exodus 38

The eighty-eighth chapter is Exodus 38. This one is relatively simple to figure out in the sense that Genesis has fifty chapters. Add on thirty-eight chapters -- giving you a total of eighty-eight -- and you end up at Exodus 38.

Exodus 38 tells of work by the Israelites in constructing the tabernacle of the LORD. Included are details about the amount of gold, silver and bronze used in the construction.
9. The No. 89. Starting at Matthew 1, what is the eighty-ninth chapter in the New Testament?

Answer: John 21

The correct answer is John 21. Matthew has twenty-eight chapters while Mark has sixteen chapters and Luke has twenty-four, giving a total of sixty-eight chapters. Add on twenty-one chapters -- which takes you to John 21 -- and you have a total of eighty-nine chapters.

John 21 is the final chapter in the Gospel of John. It tells of Jesus and the disciples having breakfast by the sea and Jesus restoring Peter.
10. The No. 90. According to Genesis 17:17, what ninety-year-old woman bore a child?

Answer: Sarah

According to Scripture, Sarah gave birth to Isaac when she was ninety years old. Genesis 17 tells of God appearing before Abraham and telling him he would be "exceedingly fruitful" and his descendants would inherit "all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession." Scripture tells of the LORD going on to state Abraham and his wife Sarah would become parents of a child in their advanced age. Genesis 17:17 in the NKJV states: "Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, 'Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?'"
