Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first priest mentioned in the Bible?

Answer: Melchizedek

Melchizedek is the first person explicitly called a priest. He is mentioned in Genesis 14:18 which reads, "Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was a priest of God Most High." Many theologians have debated about this mysterious priest of Yahweh.
2. The priests of Israel were descendants of which tribe and clan?

Answer: Levi-Kohath

The Israelite priests were of the Kohathite clan of the tribe of Levi. The first Israelite priest was Aaron (Exodus 28), who was the brother of Moses. The Israelite priests were called to be set apart for Yahweh, and had to follow all the rules in the book of Leviticus.
3. Who was Israel's third high priest?

Answer: Phinehas

Phinehas was the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron. All three of these great men were high priests of God. Phinehas was known for his zeal for Yahweh, and is first mentioned in Exodus 6:25.
4. What promise did Yahweh make to Phinehas?

Answer: That his descendants would always be priests

Yahweh promised this to Phinehas in Numbers 25:12-13, which reads, "Therefore tell him (Phinehas) I am making my covenant of peace with him. He and his descendants will have a covenant of lasting priesthood, because he was zealous for the honor of his God and made atonement for the Israelites."

This happened when Zimri dishonored Yahweh when he indulged in immorality with a Moabite woman. So Phinehas took action and killed Zimri with his spear. In doing so, Phinehas saved many Israelites from a plague that was punishing them for their disobedience.
5. Fast forward! Which priest gave David a sword and food?

Answer: Ahimelech

See 1 Samuel 21:1-9. Ahimelech provided David with bread and gave him the sword of Goliath, the giant David killed. Because Ahimelech helped David, he was killed by Doeg, a servant of the corrupted King Saul.
6. Which high priest saved the line of David by rescuing the infant prince Joash?

Answer: Jehoiada

Jehoiada and Joash's story is found in 2 Kings 11-12 and 2 Chronicles 22:10-24:27. When Joash's grandmother Athaliah learned of her son Ahaziah's death, she killed all of the princes of Ahaziah. That is, all except one. Jehoiada and his wife Jehosheba saved Joash and made him king at seven years old.

As long as Jehoiada lived, Joash made good decisions and repaired Solomon's temple. Jehoiada died at age 130.
7. Although we usually give King Josiah credit for finding the Book of the Law, which high priest was the real person who discovered it?

Answer: Hilkiah

Both 2 Kings 22:8 and 2 Chronicles 34:15 tell of this moment. Because of the evil of Josiah's grandfather Manasseh and father Amon, the Book of the Law had been lost in the temple. As soon as Hilkiah found the Book, Shaphan his secretary read it to Josiah and the people, causing a revival in Judah.
8. Who saw a vision of Joshua (aka Jeshua) the high priest standing before Yahweh and Satan?

Answer: Zechariah

This is found in Zechariah 3. In this vision, Zechariah sees Joshua the high priest dressed in filthy garments, but Yahweh gives him a clean turban and garment for Joshua.
9. Who was high priest during the time Christ was crucified?

Answer: Caiaphas

See Matthew 26:3. Caiaphas was convinced that Jesus was a heretic due to the fact that many Jewish zealots claimed to be the Messiah. Therefore, Caiaphas arrested Jesus and brought Jesus to Pilate to be killed.
10. In which book of the Bible is Jesus called a "great high priest"?

Answer: Hebrews

Hebrews 4:14 says, "Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God let us hold firmly to the faith we profess." The author of Hebrews considers Jesus a high priest because he interceded with the Father for man's sin.
