Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first prophet in Islam?

Answer: Adam

To create Adam, God used clay from the Earth. When Adam was created, his first words were, "Al-humdulillah," or "Praise to be Allah." He was sent to the Garden of Eden; however, he was not content. God used one of Adam's ribs to create Eve. Together they lived in peace and they were given one condition: not to eat the fruits of the forbidden tree. Iblis (Lucifer) heard this and he was still envious of Adam. That was because when Adam was created, Iblis refused to bow down before him, so Iblis was cast out of heaven. Iblis plotted and came up with a plan.

He described death with grisly details to the peacock, who was living in the Garden of Eden, and Iblis told the peacock the only remedy was to eat the forbidden fruits. The peacock told the snake, who passed it on to Eve, who shared this piece of information with Adam.

They decided to eat the fruit, and were cast out of heaven. He was the first prophet, and the first man.
2. Who was the first muezzin?

Answer: Bilal

Bilal, a slave to a Meccan paganist, accepted Islam a short while after Muhammad's (PBUH) call to prophethood. After revealing his beliefs, his master tortured him and tried to force Bilal to renounce his views; however, the entire time, Bilal remained steadfast. Abu Bakr, a close friend of the Prophet Muhammad, (PBUH) bought him and set him free. Bilal became the first African and slave convert to Islam. He was also the first muezzin, or a person who recites the adhan, the call to prayer. The adhan is recited in Arabic, but it means:
God is most great! God is most great!
God is most great! God is most great!
I testify that there is no god but God.
I testify that there is no god but God.
I testify that Muhammad is the Prophet of God.
I testify that Muhammad is the Prophet of God.
Hasten to prayer! Hasten to prayer!
Hasten to salvation! Hasten to salvation!
God is most great! God is most great!
There is no god but God.
3. What was the first sin on Earth described in Islam?

Answer: murder

Qabil, (Cain) the slight and weak son of Adam, was jealous of Habil (Abel). Qabil finally decided to kill his stronger brother, but didn't know how. Iblis (Lucifer) informed his brother how to kill, and to bury the corpse. After Adam learned what his son had done, he banished Qabil from his home. Qabil became the first man to worship idols, to drink wine, and later on he started to worship the fire.

In addition to these sins, whenever an unjust murder is committed on the Earth, Qabil receives a portion of the murderer's sin.
4. Who was the first wife of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)?

Answer: Khadija

A very affluent widow, Khadija hired men to take care of her commercial status. She hired the Prophet Muhammad, (PBUH) who had not received the call to prophethood yet, to be in charge of her business in Syria, and sent her servant Maysarah to accompany him.

This trade brought back exceedingly high profits and Maysarah returned with good word about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This led to Khadija asking the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to marry her, and he soon accepted even though he was 25 years old, and Khadija was 40.

After fifteen years of marriage, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received the call to prophethood. Khadija supported him when very few did, and she died during a boycott the idolaters of Mecca had placed on the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his followers.

This year was later titled "The Year of Mourning."
5. Who was the first caliph (as recognised by Sunnis)?

Answer: Abu Bakr

Abu Bakr, the closest friend of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and was one of the first converts to Islam. Abu Bakr had the honor to accompany the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on the Hijra, or the journey to Medina. A little while before his death, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) asked Abu Bakr to lead the prayer, and this was interpretated that Abu Bakr had been chosen as his successor. During his reign as Caliph, Abu Bakr spread Islam, compiled the surahs in the order they are today, and carefully recorded the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) sayings.

Shia Islam recognises Ali ibn Abi Talib, considered the third caliph by Sunnis, as the first caliph.
6. What is the first surah in the Qu'ran?

Answer: Al-Fatihah

Surahs are like chapters of the Qu'ran. Surah Al-Fatihah, or "The Opening" is the first of 114 surahs. Al-Fatihah reads:
In the name of God, the most gracious, the most merciful.
Praise be to God, the Lord of the Universe.
The most gracious, the most merciful.
Master of the Day of Judgment.
You alone we worship.
You alone we ask for help.
Guide us on the straight path; The path of those whom You have blessed, not of those who have earned your anger, nor of those who went astray.
7. What is the first month in the Islamic calendar?

Answer: Muharram

The months are as follows: Muharram, Safar, Rabia Awal, the month in the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was born, Rabia Thani, Jumaada Awal, Jumaada Thani, Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan, the most sacred month in which the Qu'ran was revealed and Muslims fast during daylight hours, Shawwal, Dhul-Qidah, and Dhul-Hijja, the month in which the Hajj, the sacred pilgrimage to Mecca can be performed.
8. The first emigration of the Muslims in Mecca was to where?

Answer: Abyssinia

To avoid persecution, about eighty Muslims emigrated to Abyssinia, and among those was Uthman, the future caliph, and his wife, Ruquyyah, the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) daughter. There they were greeted amicably by Negus of Abyssinia who let them practice their religion in peace and warded off the oppressors.

This influenced the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) towards Christians, and which resulted in the influence of the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) successors.
9. What was the first major battle in Islam in the time of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)?

Answer: Badr

In the Battle of Badr, the Muslims were outnumbered nearly three to one. In the Qu'ran it relates that Allah sent down angels to protect the Muslims. In the end, a huge portion of the Quraiysh's men were either captured or killed, while only fourteen of the three hundred Muslims were killed.
10. What is the name of the first prayer made each day in Islam?

Answer: Fajr

Fajr, the first prayer of five daily prayers, makes up the second pillar of Islam, or Salat. The Qu'ran refers to it as more precious than our lives. In Sunni Islam, in the adhan for Fajr is slightly modified. It adds a line which means prayer is better than sleep because Fajr prayer can only be read from dawn to sunrise.

The five daily prayers were first made obligatory on all Muslims after Isra and Miraj, or night journey and ascension to heaven. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was taken from his home in Mecca to Jerusalem in one night, and was taken up to the heavens.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) met with the prophets before him and was also told to tell his followers to pray five times a day.
