Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Scripture, the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on a man and while he slept He "took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh in its place." What was the man's name?

Answer: Adam

Adam is the correct answer. According to Scripture, God took Adam's rib and used it to create the first woman -- Eve.

Geneses 2:21-24, in the NKJV, states: "And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. And Adam said:
'This is now bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called Woman,
Because she was taken out of Man.'
Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh."
2. According to Judges 4:17-21, the commander of an opposing army had a tent peg hammered through his head while he was in deep sleep in the tent of Jael. What was the name of the sleepy murder victim?

Answer: Sisera

Sisera was the commander of an opposing army and after his troops were wiped out in a lop-sided battle with the Israelites, he had no choice but to flee. Scripture states he fled on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite. Sisera was vanquished and he quickly accepted Jael's offer of hospitality to take refuge in her tent. However, it would prove to be a deadly mistake.

Judges 4:18-21, tells what happened: "And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said to him, 'Turn aside, my lord, turn aside to me; do not fear.' And when he had turned aside with her into the tent, she covered him with a blanket. Then he said to her, 'Please give me a little water to drink, for I am thirsty.' So she opened a jug of milk, gave him a drink, and covered him. And he said to her, 'Stand at the door of the tent, and if any man comes and inquires of you, and says, 'Is there any man here?' you shall say, 'No.' Then Jael, Heber's wife, took a tent peg and took a hammer in her hand, and went softly to him and drove the peg into his temple, and it went down into the ground; for he was fast asleep and weary. So he died."
3. According to Judges 16, a man had a life-changing haircut and he slept through the entire affair. What was the man's name?

Answer: Samson

The correct answer is Samson, a judge of Israel who was betrayed by Delilah, his Philistine lover. According to Scripture, Samson's long hair was the key to his extraordinary strength. Judges 16:5 states five Philistine rulers each offered Delilah eleven hundred shekels of silver if she could discover the secret to his strength. After finding out Samson's hair was the reason for his brute strength, Delilah set the wheels in motion to betray him.

Judges 16:19 states: "Then she lulled him to sleep on her knees, and called for a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his head. Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him."

Scripture goes on to tell of Samson being taken captive by the Philistines.

According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, Delilah was the third Philistine woman that Samson became "entangled" with. The two others are mentioned in Judges 14:1 and Judges 16:1.
4. Scripture tells of a soldier sleeping at David's door while home on leave. David would later give orders to have the soldier murdered. What was the loyal soldier's name? (2 Samuel 11:9)

Answer: Uriah

Uriah, the husband of Bathsheba, is the correct answer. David had committed adultery with Bathsheba while Uriah was off in battle and everything seemed to be fine until she became pregnant. Scripture tells of David issuing an invitation to Uriah to take a break from the battlefield with the view he would be sleeping with his wife on his furlough. Apparently David's logic was that when Uriah slept with his wife, he would be duped into believing he was the father of the child that would be born. The plan, however, did not work.

In fact, 2 Samuel 11 tells of Uriah, the forever faithful soldier, refusing to sleep with Bathsheba while his comrades were risking their lives in battle. As a result, Uriah opted to sleep at the door of David.

2 Samuel 11:9-11 explains things this way: "But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house. So when they told David, saying, 'Uriah did not go down to his house,' David said to Uriah, 'Did you not come from a journey? Why did you not go down to your house?' And Uriah said to David, 'The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are encamped in the open fields. Shall I then go to my house to eat and drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing.'"

After sleeping on things, David came up with a plan to have Uriah killed in battle. He gave orders to Joab, Uriah's commander, to have the soldier sent to the part of the battle where the fighting was most fierce, then to have all the soldiers retreat and leave Uriah at the mercy of his adversaries. True to plan, Uriah was killed.

David's troubles, however, would be only beginning.
5. The following verse, containing the word 'sleep' is from the NKJKV: "When you lie down, you will not be afraid; Yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet." In what book in the Hebrew Bible, or the Old Testament of the English Bible, do you find the verse?

Answer: Proverbs

The verse is found in the twenty-fourth verse of the third chapter of Proverbs.

To put the verse in context, here's how Proverbs 3:21-26, reads:
"My son, let them not depart from your eyes --
Keep sound wisdom and discretion;
So they will be life to your soul
And grace to your neck.
Then you will walk safely in your way,
And your foot will not stumble.
When you lie down, you will not be afraid;
Yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet.
Do not be afraid of sudden terror,
Nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes;
For the LORD will be your confidence,
And will keep your foot from being caught."
6. Scripture tells of Jesus fervently praying in the Garden of Gethsemane just prior to His arrest and eventual crucifixion. According to Matthew 26:36-44, three of His disciples fell asleep while He was praying. And this happened more than once. How many times did Jesus find the disciples sleeping while He was praying?

Answer: Three times

According to Scripture, Peter, James and John fell asleep on three different occasions while Jesus was praying.

Here's how Matthew 26:36-45, in the NKJV, explains things: "Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, 'Sit here while I go and pray over there.' And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. Then He said to them, 'My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.' He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, 'O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.' Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, 'What! Could you not watch with Me one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.' Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, 'O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.' And He came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy. So He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. Then He came to His disciples and said to them, 'Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.'"

Scripture goes on to tell of the arrest of Jesus, His crucifixion, His resurrection and His ascension to heaven.
7. According to Luke 8, Jesus was sleeping before He calmed a storm on the Sea of Galilee. Where was He sleeping?

Answer: In a boat rowed by the disciples.

'In a boat rowed by the disciples' is the correct answer.

Luke 8:22-24, in the NKJV, states: "Now it happened, on a certain day, that He got into a boat with His disciples. And He said to them, 'Let us cross over to the other side of the lake.' And they launched out. But as they sailed He fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water, and were in jeopardy. And they came to Him and awoke Him, saying, 'Master, Master, we are perishing!' Then He arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water. And they ceased, and there was a calm."

It was the first of two different times Jesus would calm storms on the Sea of Galilee. In addition to Luke 8, details of the first miracle can be found in Matthew 8 and Mark 4. Details of the second miracle can be found in Matthew 14 and Mark 6.

In the second incident, the disciples encountered Christ walking on the water of the Sea of Galilee during a storm. In both cases He rebuked the waves and all was placid, Scripture states.
8. Before bringing a dead girl back to life, Jesus told mourners she was not dead but simply sleeping, as per Mark 5:21-43. Scripture states the mourners stopped crying and laughed at Christ's claim. Their laughter, however, would turn to amazement when the girl was raised from the dead. According to Scripture, what three disciples did Jesus take with Him inside the girl's house when He brought her back to life?

Answer: Peter, James and John

The correct answer is Peter, James and John. The three disciples are regarded as Christ's inner circle.

Mark 5:37-42, in the NKJV, states: "And He permitted no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James. Then He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw a tumult and those who wept and wailed loudly. When He came in, He said to them, 'Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but sleeping.' And they ridiculed Him. But when He had put them all outside, He took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with Him, and entered where the child was lying. Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, 'Talitha, cumi,' which is translated, 'Little girl, I say to you, arise.' Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age. And they were overcome with great amazement."

Peter James and John were also with Jesus on Mount Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1) and with Him when He was fervently praying in Gethsemane before His arrest and crucifixion (Matthew 26:36-44).
9. According to Scripture, a young man, who was seated in a third-story window, went into a deep sleep while the apostle Paul preached on and on. Acts 20:9 states the man then fell out of the window and plunged to his death. What was the name of the sleepy man?

Answer: Eutychus

Eutychus is the correct answer. There's a happy ending to the story. According to Scripture, Paul miraculously brought the young man back to life.

Acts 20:9-12, in the NKJV, tells how the events unfolded: "And in a window sat a certain young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep. He was overcome by sleep; and as Paul continued speaking, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead. But Paul went down, fell on him, and embracing him said, 'Do not trouble yourselves, for his life is in him.' Now when he had come up, had broken bread and eaten, and talked a long while, even till daybreak, he departed. And they brought the young man in alive, and they were not a little comforted."
10. Acts 16 tells of the keeper of a prison awakening from a deep sleep to find the prison doors had sprung open because of a divine earthquake. Two of the prisoners were Paul and Silas. In which community did the sleepy jailer live?

Answer: Philippi

The event involving the sleepy jailer took place in Philippi, as per Acts 16:11. His prized prisoners were Paul and Silas, two workers in the early church. The jailer couldn't believe his eyes when he awoke from a deep sleep.

According to Scripture, a "violent" earthquake shook the prison and "at once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone's chains came loose."

It should be noted, however, Paul and Silas did not flee from their cell, as did the other prisoners. They opted to stay behind and it appears their obedience impressed the jailer so much he opted to become a Christian.

Here's how the events unfold in Acts 16:27-31 in the NKJV Bible: "And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself. But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, 'Do yourself no harm, for we are all here.' Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. And he brought them out and said, 'Sirs, what must I do to be saved?' So they said, 'Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.' Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized. Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household."

The passage goes on to tell of Paul and Silas being officially released from prison by the authorities.

Wikipedia states Philippi was a city in eastern Macedonia. "The present municipality Filippoi is located near the ruins of the ancient city and it is part of the region of East Macedonia and Thrace in Greece," Wikipedia reports.
